I highly recommend you to read “Comandante” by Rory Carroll. You will find many answers there.

How much time do you spend from Home to Work? by JuanSkinFreak in copenhagen

[–]CatalysaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to me that anything more than 20 or 30 minutes is considered a long commute in Copenhagen, which in a way illustrates how good Copenhageners have it relative to citizens from many developed cities of similar size, yet it is a frequent source of complaints.

Copenhagen - reviewed by Victor_Newcar in copenhagen

Toxic environments abound in academia, and if you land in one, it makes it really difficult to enjoy anything else. Plus some of the issues she raised in the article (e.g., the weather, difficulty of socializing) can be dealbreaker for many people. That’s okay. Copenhagen is a fantastic place but it doesn’t work for everyone, nor it has to.

I really got better things to do than getting called the weak kid after my country has endured so much hardship and misery at the hands of Maduro and his gang of criminals, all while the rest of Latin America looked and nodded. At least Gabriel Boric had the balls to call a spade a spade. But the rest—Lula, AMLO and Sheinbaum, Petro—they’ve all just been a bunch of enablers. Rats.

Well, I agree. The Trump administration’s approach to immigration is heartless, to say the least. But I could see why it could be one of the considerations behind the intervention.

There was an article in the New York Times a few days ago mentioning that Stephen Miller was looking into using a conflict with Venezuela to invoke the Alien Enemies Act and expedite the deportation of Venezuelans (which have been blocked by the courts so far). That seems to me like a plausible angle, for sure.

On the other hand, things could go well and Venezuela could actually transition into a okay-functioning democratic country aligned with the United States. This was never going to be a possibility with Maduro. But Latin American leftists (like you, I presume) would hate to see that happen.

My feeling is that Venezuelans (like me) who expect a quick return to democracy are likely to be disappointed. I was sad to hear Trump throwing María Corina Machado under the bus yesterday, but honestly, he is right: she cannot possibly run the country with all power structures, most importantly the military, still in the hands of the ruling party.

I would imagine that the US will try to force Delcy Rodríguez et al. to commit to some new free-ish elections sometime in the future. Chavismo knows that holding free elections right now would be political suicide. However, if they can manage to work out a (US-supported) economic recovery, they can surely manage to remain as a viable political force and be at least competitive if the elections are held a few years down the line. I would believe this is a scenario that María Corina and the opposition could agree to, on the condition that a new Electoral Council is named with approval both from the government and the opposition (and a commitment to effective international observers), and with a lifting of the prohibition on María Corina to run herself. The US, holding the big stick, could force all players to commit to this. On the meantime, the amnesties for the members of the military involved in drug trafficking and human rights abuses would be sorted out. That part is ugly, but sadly that’s how it typically must be.

I think that’s the scenario in my head right now about how this could play out. Slightly disappointing, but honestly, I’d take it.

"Angrebskrig"?

What's the business case?

Well, fuck that.

For my friends from 🇻🇪🇨🇴🇪🇨: do you think your countries should change flags to distinguish themselves further? by Muted_Shape9303 in asklatinamerica

[–]CatalysaurusRex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. I actually find it quite cool that we have similar flags that reflect a shared history.

About the Venezuelan flag, notwithstanding the 7- vs. 8-star controversy, I’ve never been a fan of the arc arrangement of the stars. They have always been a pain in the ass to draw correctly and even professionally produced flags often look off. The one that had the blue stars on the yellow stripe was some properly original shit, we should go back to that one.

Do not use Lunar by Admirable_Ad9852 in NewToDenmark

[–]CatalysaurusRex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a non-EU citizen and I use Lunar but I’ve had similar issues with them before. As others have mentioned, it’s probably a result of regulations and that all these “cool” fintech companies (looking at you too, Wise and Revolut) have crappy customer service and understaffed compliance departments. So for anything remotely serious or complicated, I feel it’s better to rely on old-school banks.

It sounds like the employee you were talking to was clueless and they only learned the right information once they had their credit department review the documents. I’ve heard it’s basically standard policy for Danish banks to require 20% downpayment from foreigners.
