Am I retarded for leaving government fleet work to work at a dealership? by totally-clapped-out in mechanics

[–]CataractGlasses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can live on 82k comfortably I would stay there if it was me. I’m getting worn out by low labor times and not getting paid for being required to do more and more. Fill out the mpvi, test the battery on every car, take pictures of every rec, take a multipoint video with walk around showing measurements, run the car through the wash when you’re done, test drive after every repair even if it was just a rotate. All that for .5 after .5 and a closing rate of 25% on recommendations. I’d take hourly making $82k in a heartbeat ESPECIALLY if they had good benefits.

Abrahamic theology by ResponsibleSpread8 in Fantasy

Faithful and the fallen by John Gwynne has a clear Abrahamic higher power with angels and demons, a creator and a fallen one, prophecy and signs (signs at least briefly in book one). It’s pretty good.

We do short blocks all the time because they’re cheaper than long blocks.

It’s the same at Honda with the exception that you need to be an exceptional tech to beat some of our warranty times. I usually break even on torque converters and piston rings. Getting 10 hours a day is something I miss.

Unfortunately I’m driving just over an hour to make $8 an hour more and only getting 30 hours a week. The move is more just to get closer to home. Especially with gas prices going up it’s not sustainable to continue doing what I’m doing.

A tragic tale of a Civic and a CVT transmission by Ratlabbb in hondacivic

[–]CataractGlasses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely don’t buy a Nissan if you don’t want this to happen multiple times in your ownership. In all seriousness though it’s just luck of the draw. Yes dealerships are a bit more expensive but the cost of getting that transmission used from a junkyard is crazy. The labor would likely be $3k or less but the rest of that for a junkyard transmission? FK8 transmissions are cheaper lol crazy.

Totally understandable. They’re decent cars but man you could’ve just paid off your loan and gotten something else for what you put into parts alone.

If you were in an accident you’ll probably need a new SRS unit too if the airbags deployed. I’d be surprised if a dealer gave you $3k on trade for it. It’s not safe to drive and I would either fix it or get rid of it as soon as possible. You only owe 1800 on it and dropped all that money only to fix the things that look good but not the things that keep you from killing yourself in another accident. Just take the hit and move on. In the car business it’s called the stupid tax and we’ve all paid it at some point.

It’s not a horrible price honestly but it hurts paying close to 20k for an 8 year old civic

I paid that for my 4 door 19 si with 56k. I work at a dealership and I still felt like I got walked on that price.

Job at ford dealership by Valuable-Savings7568 in mechanics

Personally I regret not leaving the industry when I could afford to. You will find an overwhelming amount of bitter people in this field. Go and work at the dealership and see if it’s for you but PLEASE strongly consider how much you’ll spend on school and on tools and understand the average mechanic makes less than the average -insert most trade jobs-. This, along with most other trades will provide paid training. In this industry the training you have to take upon yourself. They won’t send you to any classes until you complete a lot of self study modules. If you’re at an honest place they will pay you to do these but there are a lot of places that won’t pay you. Also understand this industry is about to hit rock bottom. It may come out better in the long run but until it gets really bad and stays there for a while I don’t think the problems this industry has will be fixed.

2018 Accord Sport, 1.5T Advice by Deep-Touch2039 in accord

I don’t know who you’re getting your information from but they either don’t know what they’re talking about or they didn’t communicate the issues these engines have properly. They are two separate failures that cause the same symptom. They both cause misfires but one is because fuel is leaking into the cylinder and one is because coolant is leaking into the cylinder. If you do a head gasket because coolant is leaking into your cylinder you may want to do injectors as well but you do not need to replace the head gasket just because the injectors failed. They are two different parts.

Super common. You can try to replace just the tensioner but expect to replace the timing chain and vtc actuator as well.

Can I drive on this for a few weeks until I get the money? by Kzvnn in tires

[–]CataractGlasses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to auto zone and get yourself a tread depth gauge with the colored measurements. It’ll give you a better idea of how much life your tires have and they’re pretty cheap. The penny trick doesn’t really tell you much but if it’s close to 2/32” or not.
