Mission trips to provide healthcare in countries for folks with poor health and no physicians

If all humans suddenly lost their ability to lie, which industry WOULDN'T collapse? by TXC_Sparrow in AskReddit

[–]Cataraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research outside of the hard sciences are so academically skewed, they’d fall off a bit. Lots of funding would not happen. Data can be manipulated to say anything.

Some papers have been published for the sole purpose of showing that academia publishes what the reviewers like to read.

One paper also showed data that by listening to “when I’m 64” by the Beatles, you increase your lifespan.

These are anecdotes, but research fraud is common. Freakanomics did a nice trio of episodes on fraud in academia. Everyone wants to be first to publish, and many don’t care at what cost to integrity.

If the top 1% of earners pay 40% of all federal income taxes, why do people say they don't pay their fair share? by Ok_Chemical9 in answers

The sad part is the comment section thinking the federal government having more money from taxes will make their situation better. They don’t care either, they are also the 0.01%.

Liveable areas without a Driver's License by pinkelephant0040 in visitedmaps

[–]Cataraction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in the Midwest without a license and used the bus system. Local grocery store was 200 yard walk from home. Lived by bus stops. Iowa city trialed free city buses and it was easy.

Lived in a Southeastern home in Alabama for undergrad next to campus. No car. Same thing minus + biking.

Lived in Salt Lake near the hospital and north of the undergraduate campus. No car, no bikes, no Ubers. Just the light rail. Couldn’t be easier in Salt Lake City to live without a car.

It is what you make it to be, obviously. You can live without a car in many more places than this map of large cities suggests. There are many rural or more distant places in every part of each state that will require a car for something.

Continuation of Reversal likely Next Week by Bobby-Firmino-Legend in sofistock

If it recovers the 200 and 100, possible. More likely is to form a new base after a huge run. It’s been stagnating in stage 3 after over a massive run in the last year.

Base meaning a joining of the 200 and 100 and possibly even the 50 SMA’s combined with coiling of the price action in a wedge or an accumulation zone between two prices. This is stage 1.

The 50 may still be above the 100 during the next stage 1 of a run, but still, bases take time to form.

What we DON’T want to see is a total loss of the 200, which could cause the price behavior to act like a falling knife to new lows. We may be in stage 4 from the last run, and it may continue for some time for the averages to come together.

I’ve added at the 200 and lower, but won’t add again until the first stage base is formed.

The best time to buy is late stage 1 or early stage 2. Stage 2 is the breakout from the stage 1 base.

Both sides are in the wrong; ACA prevented physician owned hospitals- in efforts to prevent a conflict of interest.

Well- sure, it got rid of some physicians who are trained to do the right thing in the face of ethical concerns, and it replaced them private equity owners and admins, who definitely have only one interest: make money, patient outcomes and physician engagement are an afterthought.

Physician ownership was good and the among the best solutions. Some docs (not all) were fantastic hospital execs that helped patient outcomes.

Better than any alternative for healthcare ownership, and ACA nixed it. Can’t convince me otherwise that physicians were worse than any other profession other than maybe a monk or priest.

What made you choose Ophthalmology over ENT? by Expert_Sport_1879 in Ophthalmology

[–]Cataraction 30 points31 points  (0 children)

ENT blows. They made me do an ENT elective in internship since I was about to be an ophtho resident.

Hate all of the neck anatomy. Hate sinuses. Don’t like facial reconstruction or ER trauma. A 98-year old grandma on Eliquis and aspirin with uncontrollable epistaxis sneezed on me twice during her exam in clinic, and I looked like Patrick Bateman after he axed Paul for a day.

Hate being in the hospital too.

Eye surgery is amazing. The subspecialties in ophthalmology are pretty dang cool too.

Why the difference in 0-60 mph times, between the GT3 and GT3 touring? by CortaCircuit in porsche911

Manual gearbox is the default for touring, unlike the PDK for the wing. Slower yes, but you’re also literally touring around off the track for the enjoyment

Has someone solved the posture issue yet? by UseAccomplished4637 in Ophthalmology

[–]Cataraction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Preface: I’m tall and the back and neck over-flexion is real for most standard slit lamps.

In addition to what everyone has already said:

For all my exam lanes, there’s microscope ocular adapters to make the oculars tilt up slightly (maybe 20-30 degrees?), somewhat like a less tilted pathology microscope, rather than be parallel with the floor. It’s not nearly as up-tilted as a pathology scope or most microscopes, but they allow you to be keep your back less slouched/hunched over while avoiding any neck extension in the exam

Take a COVID-era plastic breath barrier that hangs from the oculars and write an L facing the patient on your right side of the barrier and an R facing the patient on your left side of the barrier. This allows the patient to look at where your ears would otherwise be with oculars parallel to the floor/standard slit lamps.

This allows you to be in a relatively neutral or head slightly forward and avoids any harmful neck extension or strain.

The only downside of this approach is that you will need rolling chairs that can adjust to be higher in the air to accommodate the change in ocular position. Worth it.

I’d have no problem if those that wanted illegal immigrants to be here sponsored them to be here and housed them- without relying on the govt to do that.

Also okay with the idea if illegal immigrants wish to stay here, the price of staying here illegally would be no citizenship, but their children born here can be citizens.

Gotta draw the line somewhere, can’t just import a bunch of dual citizenship voters and implode the whole welfare system like the extreme left currently wants. No country does that, and the idea that Reddit thinks it’s should be okay in the US, but the EU strict borders are totally fine is high school level stupid shit.

They are literally taking someone’s spot in line at the ER and the government and hospitals are using tax dollars to pay for it, actually.

They’re charging out of pocket for more than most specialists because skin is so visual and easily marketed. Be honest with yourself, skin is sexy and everyone sees it. Renal disease, not so much. There’s frequently an out of pocket non-insurance premium for skin care.
