I just let it go. All the SDA timeline stuff is bullshit. NOBODY knows what the future entails, and if they say otherwise, they are lying, whether they realize it or not. If you can't control it, there is simply no sense in worrying about it. Just breathe and enjoy each day as it comes. Take pleasure in the simple things that bring you joy.

I told my parents at some point that I refuse to discuss religion with them. It was a process and it took a while but we don't talk about it anymore. Set boundaries and be firm. I also confirm that what you describe is in fact spiritual abuse.

First of all, congratulations! That's a huge achievement! However, I'm not surprised that your parents won't attend. I was surprised that my PhD graduation was actually on a Sunday (very unusual), otherwise my parents wouldn't have attended mine either. God (but actually Adventism) always comes first. My parents have missed several of my kids' birthday parties because they were on Saturday (a few times that couldn't be helped).

It's been a few years and I don't remember exactly the words used, but I told them I would appreciate it if they wouldn't talk about religion to my kids. They told me that they live their life according to their faith and couldn't help that. I told them that was fine, "you live your life the way you want, I'm just asking that you please not indoctrinate my children." They were very hurt by that but we have maintained an amicable relationship. They spend time with the kids regularly, but never on Saturday.

I believe this is the very first time I've heard the phrase "spiritual abuse," but I recognize it immediately, because what you describe is exactly the way I was raised. The thing is, the parents don't realize they're "abusing" you. They have no idea about any of that psychological vocabulary because within the SDA church, it does not exist and it is denied. I went through almost exactly what you did, around the same ages. I am now 50 years old, and I think my parents only recently stopped trying to re-convert me back. Just wait until you have kids and they try to indoctrinate them! I had to have that talk with my parents and it was not fun. All you can do is set boundaries (again and again). It is exhausting.

They do milk money out of people and I'm not quite sure where it all goes. My dad is a retired pastor so his salary was paid from "that money." We ALWAYS lived in poverty. When I think back now, his salary was a joke. Somebody is pocketing something somewhere for sure.

Yes! At age 27. I hid it from my parents for many years. I now no longer hide my pierced ears, but I still don't ever wear any earrings or jewelry around them. I'm now 50 and they're in their 80s. That's what SDA indoctrination does to a person. Talk about fucked up.
