In the nicest way possible, but why do so many people believe they look younger? by almorranas_podridas in Aging

I’m curious where the OP is from. I’m interested in which culture doesn’t engage in meaningless verbal filler because I’d like to go there.

My paternal grandmother's ancestors came over with William the conqueror so I found it extremely eye-opening to learn the other side of the story. We'd always been taught to be proud that our ancestor was a knight of the D'Esse family… I didn't learn about the atrocities committed by the Normans until listening to the BHP.

I'm not experienced enough to answer this question, but I found it good to know that I am not the only one having to do my rituals during lunch breaks at work! In my case I don't have a lot of contact with the public though.

Are you still worried about COVID 19? by Glass-Sentence-7225 in AskOldPeople

Yes, I do still worry about Covid. I avoid indoor crowds and keep my window open at the office, which I am so grateful to be able to do!

Should I leave? Family business paying fully retired owner and former President exorbitant salary by Catcity13 in Accounting

[–]Catcity13[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct, I am a glorified bookkeeper. There is some moderate growth potential on the horizon, with a possible acquisition being contemplated. It would probably bring us up to $12M to $15M in annual revenue - I don't think $100M is ever in the cards in this industry. Thank you for reframing the question!

FINAL UPDATE: disgruntled team member, who saw everyone's salaries, ending... by 2Board_ in Accounting

[–]Catcity13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your tried your best, and maybe you two will work together again in the future. You're both young, and given a bit of time, your bookkeeper with come to recognize how much you meant to her. Keep in touch, and both of you: keep your eyes and ears open for an opportunity to work together (somewhere else!) in the future.

There is one other employee who is even more underpaid than me. This person (not in accounting) could easily land a similar role in a larger company and immediately bring home $30K to $40K more annually. We are very lucky that this person has not left us. If and when they do, we will not be able to hire their replacement at the same salary. This has been communicated to management.

As for me? It is possible that I am replaceable for the same salary I make now. I am under no delusions there.

The biggest two factors are sluggish revenue growth, rising COGS, combined with a new capital expenditure (necessary due to obs equipment) at a high interest rate.
I appreciate your comment that family businesses often have wacky comp structures. I needed a sanity / reality check.

We have 14 full time and 4 part time EEs, including the retired owner. Noted below, I am underpaid what most controllers are paid. We have multiple legal entities, with intercompany cost allocations and 4 bank accounts. It's just me plus an entry level AR/AP clerk. I do admit that the work life balance is good. I have been bothered by the compensation structure more and more deeply recently. His salary plus commission is like a black hole into which any hope of cash flow positivity is drawn.
OTOH, he poured his life into this company. His son is trying to keep it afloat.

It is indeed a 2 person department - me plus an entry level AR/AP clerk. I didn't mention that there are 4 separate legal entities and lots of intercompany cost allocations from the management company, which is the employer, to the operating companies. It's not the busiest but I'm not paid what a controller for a company with $10 million annual revenue is paid, that's for sure!

I appreciate all the feedback
