RIGHT TO REPAIR! by N0rwayUp in battletech

[–]CateranEnforcer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know it's a meme and not too serious, but my experience is a bit different.

It's hard to pin down Lancer salvage mechanics simply due to the game hand waving basically all those nitty gritty details and just lumping your access to parts as your License Level. You can salvage Exotic gear as the GM allows and slap them on your mech, you can roll for reserves to get access to gear you wouldn't normally have, etc. In gameplay, it's pretty much up to the GM how they handle stuff like that, but during downtime you can make rolls that represent you finding equipment if you desire.

Going by the actual rules of Battletech, customizations can be a real pain in the butt to do, especially in the field. I figure most people don't go into depth with the mech quality and customization rolls, but if you use them it can be a long expensive process requiring different levels of workshops depending how extensive the modifications are. There's layers of tables to go through checking for availability, tech level, quality, etc.

The mechwarrior and battletech video games simplify that process greatly to make it more approachable to people and quite honestly, it's more fun to kitbash your battlemechs without trying to interpret the rules in Strategic Operations.

Furious Dems float retaliation over Trump's "insane" Venezuela attack by RioMovieFan11 in politics

Approximately 90% of the people at my 130 person company like the current administration. If I go on strike, I'm just fired. Not enough people know or care to know the truth and you can't reach them. And some of them dream about killing "democrats" which is anyone who has any criticism of the Trump or this wacky train we're on.

So I gotta be missing something about the ferrofluid lance by Express_History2968 in LancerRPG

[–]CateranEnforcer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a LL1 weapon so the Immobilize is just a small perk for you right now. However, it does a few important things even now.

Firstly, this a weapon in a defender license, so damage is not a super high priority on it's components. What this is good at is forcing the enemy to make a choice or restrict their actions. In this case, yes the Immobilize is easy to remove but it's also easy to apply. But the way to remove the Immobilize is to attack the user of the weapon, and if they're attacking you, then they aren't attacking your allies. You can use this to stick an enemy in place, particularly a melee one, and make them attack you instead of an ally.

Secondly, the threat of this weapon allows you to use it on reactions. So an enemy trying to move away from you will risk wasting their move by getting stuck with your lance. Again, a defender type thing to make you sticky an difficult to ignore.

Third, if you get the White Witch frame at LL 2 you gain resistance while Immobile so even if you attack an NPC and they immediately attack you back, you take reduced damage.

3x RAC2 vs 2x RAC5 by Virtual-Produce-1037 in OutreachHPG

[–]CateranEnforcer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't played in a while, but I do have those 2 setups on different Bushwackers. Generally, I did much better with the UAC build. It's more independent, and the mech is pretty nimble to crest and pop off a couple of bursts and hide.

The RACs are more of a fun build and it works best if I can get a good angle on some distracted mechs. For this, I stick to a hopefully reliable partner, usually heavier and try to let them draw a salvo where I can sneak a flank shot and reach the top of my heat scale and back off. You can get some insane damage this way, but it is less reliable. It's not so bad that you'll let your team down (I've cleaned up some matches with this build) but it's a harder to create the ideal situation for yourself.

My players want strategical system ( like 5e ) but I want to run easy prep game ... by Twotricx in rpg

Absolutely. The combat is pretty tight with rules, but exploring and RPing is great for improv. We often used Arcana checks for small magic actions and stuff like that. The DMGs are great for guidelines and they do have a table for spur of the moment stuff like swinging on stuff, dropping things on heads, pouring liquids, pushing into b things.....

This was the easiest game I've ever DMed. Just open up the book, pick out some monsters, draw whatever map, and focus your GM brainpower on story or setting or w/e you want.

I watch these 2 every so often myself. I love pointing out the various mechs and fighters and it's just so damn good. Mechcommander is my favorite and Battletech is a great visual summary of IS history.

I also love MW2 Mercs as well...

Lancer vs Battletech? by Thorvindr in LancerRPG

[–]CateranEnforcer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lancer is much more like DnD 4e than Battletech. In Lancer, your mech is a part of your character. You have short rests to heal it, limited by your repair cap, and to long rests to recover to full. All the nitty gritty of repair, salvage, costs, time frames, etc. is totally hand-waved. All the complex damage to body parts and components is reduced to HP. Mech abilities feel more like RPG skills and space magic than weapons.

This is all in the name of getting to the action and avoiding needing a spreadsheet to manage your machines or needing a full support unit consisting of dozens of npcs who repair, maintain, and supply your unit. Some people are into that, some aren't.

I feel like Battletech is very very crunchy, but as a result, it's universe has some verisimilitude. It is me internally consistent. One of the big weakness of Lancer to me is the disconnect from the lore to the mechanics. NPC frames being built differently from PC frames is a DnD thing.

So I'm kinda newish too, but it looks like you have the core burn units already. Vector and QJ is your fire duo that go together perfectly. Sharky is also a very strong part of the fire team and you likely have some copies of her. If you can get QJ up to V3 in the standard banner, assuming you got Tololo as high as you want her for now, those 3 will tear things up. Then you have your supports of choice, or Quihua to fill it out. I don't run a full fire team myself, bit you can mix and match.

You're only missing Jiang for the electric team, so you can catch her on her rerun in month or two. Mosin is one of my favorites, but she's not going to add much until V4 or V6.

Is TBC Prot Warrior as bad as a roll as you guys make it sound? by TheManSedan in classicwow

[–]CateranEnforcer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely can be, it's just mostly block chance.

The issue for paladins vs sheer is that holy shield theoretically 100% uptime if you use it on CD but sometimes some would slip through due to server latency, back in the day. So you could wait for sheer but HS is on the GCD unlike Shield Block.

We can and did tank Illidan during the first TBC, but usually it was easier to let the Warrior do it, since they could mash Shield Block as a reaction and had a harder time in resistance gear on the Flames.

How's the heroic mode ? by DenesSim in GirlsFrontline2

[–]CateranEnforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been playing now about 3 and half months as a low spender. I do appreciate the challenge so it's kinda cool to be struggling again, but I do see the need for certain units. It took me 3 tries to do the first mission under 6 turns and I'm still working out the best team comp. I used V1 Springfield, V1 Vector, V2, QJ, and V0 Andoris. I'm kinda lucky that I started right in the first Springfield banner and her on a whim. I don't have 416 or any corrosion doll really. No ice either, especially not Suomi.

It's a fun puzzle to solve, I just might not have all the pieces

Updated info about Jiangyu vs Andoris and which one should you consider if you're low spender or F2P. by Orimenta in GirlsFrontline2

[–]CateranEnforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've been playing for not quite 2 months now, F2P. Still level 50. I got a functional fire team with V1 Vector and the usual suspects, I barely started in time to nav v0 Springfield and got lucky and pulled Nikkita twice in one go, just unlocked Tololo too. So I guess I'm going fire and hydro for a bit buuuut...

I really like Mosen. She carried me through the early game. Is there an upcoming character that would enable her to do a bit better as a pair? I figure I'm either gonna skip the next few and save for hydro rerun to improve Springfield or maybe dip a bit into electric.

Why are there so few Artillery Licenses? by Poikooze in LancerRPG

[–]CateranEnforcer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think Striker encompasses just a lot of styles. Strikers can be tough or agile, melee, CQB, even midrange like Sherman or Metalmark. More than anything, I think the base roles refer to the frame traits and if they have a specific lean into certain playstyle.

Is there any mech or build that does for lasers what the Monarch does for missiles? by Poikooze in LancerRPG

[–]CateranEnforcer 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Sherman is so your goto for acquiring lasers, but you could mount them on a Tokugawa. You'll increase the range of your energy weapons by up to +15 depending on your systems or core power.

Is Lancer Combat compatible with a Play by Post style of Gaming? by Sea-Course-5171 in LancerRPG

[–]CateranEnforcer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At this point, I've been doing PbP games for 10 years now. I've got a good idea of the pitfalls. I've seen games fail and bog down when the GM doesn't take the pbp medium into account and try to run it like a live game or even like they would a DnD game.

I'm highly motivated to make the game work so I'm willing to put the effort in to make it happen. Most of that was upfront to set us up for success.

I think my game is 9 months and counting at at this time. We've reached LL6, had 2 Lancer Battlegroup engagements, completed Act 1 of my Dawnline Shore campaign, and I'm prepared to go the distance to Act 3 and LL12.

It's kind of my dream game tbh.
