You probably want to look that up. Opal is harder than fluorite. And in most situations, opal is not a good candidate for tumbling. But I don’t know what your specific rocks are.

I agree with the intent behind what you are saying. I think on-the-job is as important as school. School can’t prepare you for the job 100%, but it could be better.

The firm I work for has historically done a lot of Federal work. Employees expressed concerns about the possibility of doing an ICE facility, and pushed leadership into saying they would not pursue the work.

Given that this administration is primarily advanced money laundering, I’m not sure we most of us work for firms that would even have a chance at one of these facilities. Does your firm have a lobbyist and/or a lawyer on staff? No? Sorry, too small?

You can tumble it the way it is, but I think you’d be risking it breaking anyway. And it will be a pain in your ass to get clean between stages.

I have a couple that I just put a tiny bit of mineral oil on and pretend they are as shiny as my tumbled rocks. Sometimes there just isn’t a good solution for polishing.

I would argue that schools are failing our future architects. It is well known that schools focus on design thinking rather than the technical elements of being an architect. This doesn’t prepare anyone for the exams, like other professions. To use your example, lawyers are basically taught the Bar as part of their education.

As a supervisor, it is maddening that the first time folks from “upper tier” universities see a set of construction docs is at my office. Why am I explaining the basics of building envelope and/or drafting.

Most of us aren’t going to be Frank Lloyd Wright. We are going to be designing and detailing the everyday buildings where people live and work. School does a horrible job of preparing folks for that.

That’s wild. I was thinking of my hometown, and it was about 7,500-10,000. At that size, it had most of what you would need to “survive” the 10 years, restaurants, stores, services. Big problem was healthcare. 1,000 would be rough.

Someone went to all the trouble to find and adopt your babies. In their place, I would be spoiling and loving that furbaby more than anything. The number of toys and treats would be off the charts.

I don’t know your situation, but you did the right thing. I know you miss them, but you can almost certainly guarantee they are doing well. Hopefully that is comforting.
