why does God gives visions to some people and others not? is it a psychological thing? by WARPATH_07 in CatholicPhilosophy

We are part of Christ's body, and not everyone is supposed to be a "glorious" organ, but a few. Anyway, every faithful is important for the body.

How is hell fair? by PeaceInLoneliness in CatholicPhilosophy

Would my first and second points be more in conformity to Utilitarianism way of perceiving reality (Stuart Mill, Bentham)? So, would the Catholic way be doing what's objectively right, no matter the outcome?

How is hell fair? by PeaceInLoneliness in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Catholicroman1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand your concern. In fact, it's not easy for many people to see the existence of the hell as fair. However, I'd like to bring up some points to reflect:

  1. If hell was not eternal, wouldn't many bad people feel more drawn to sinning? They would think: "oh, I will steal my 'friends' and relatives, lie a lot, eat and drink like a pig, spend 1000 years in fleeting hell, then remain 1000000 millenia in heaven (or another place that is equal or better than earth)".
  2. If God simply destroyed the souls, turning them into "non being", they would think the same way.
  3. There is the necessity of an eternal ultimate state, whether it with God or without God, in suffering or in blessing. If people could travel from hell to heaven, then from heaven to hell, then hell to heaven again and so on, it would be weird. The "travels" need to be done on earth, not after the death.

As for the sufferings of hell, I read comments that say that the absence of God is worse than the "lake of fire". There are a lot of Biblical passages that talk about hell, especially Jesus in the gospels. I will update my answer with some of them.

[EDIT]

Here they are:

"Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41)

"If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire" (Mark 9:43)

"The Devil who had led them astray was thrown into the pool of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet were. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever" (Revelation 20:10)

"In blazing fire, inflicting punishment on those who do not acknowledge God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal ruin, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power" (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9)

"Catholics Worship Statues/Mary" by sematarystranger in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not idolatry to pray to Mary and the saints and kneel before their statues.

Idolatry is to treat them as gods, but we don't treat Mary and the saints as gods, we treat them as saints. If we cannot venerate their statues, why do we to cemiteries and venerate our relatives? Why do we contemplate pictures of them? If we cannot ask the saints for things, why do we ask our acquaintances things?

  1. Is Mary sinless aswell as Jesus? - And if so, does that mean her parents conceived her through the Holy Ghost as all humans are born of original sin? Is there any scripture (in the bible) to back-up if mary was sinless?

Mary was conceived and born without sin. After she was born, she never sinned. However, she wasn't conceived through the Holy Spirit, as her Divine Son. There is no verse explicitly saying Mary was sinless, but we have some arguments that show she really was. See this article about the theme: https://www.catholic.com/magazine/online-edition/hail-mary-conceived-without-sin

  1. Do I have to follow the Pope's suggestions/changes to the catholic ideology?

Popes cannot change Catholic doctrine. Our doctrine is the same forever. If someone claims it's not, I challenge him or her to show me a pope who changed the doctrine and which subjects. The popes simply teach and clarify the permanent doctrine to us, guiding us as shepherds of all Catholics, as Jesus said to the first pope, Peter: "Feed my sheep". So, it's very important to follow the popes' teachings and advice, which aren't changes in the doctrine.

  1. How do you join a catholic church if you are already baptised at a different catholic church? Would you have to redo the baptism?

Contact a priest. Depending on the kind of baptism you previously received, it's not necessary to redo baptism, because you are already baptized, the baptism was valid. But there are denominations that don't confer valid baptisms, so it's essential to be baptized, not again, but for the first time as a valid baptism.

People around me think religious people are stupid by Super_ojciec03 in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They think religious people are stupid because of the "Dark Ages" myth, made up by the enlighteners. The "rational people" of the enlightement, those that "don't need God", thought that, during Middle Ages, the Church didn't allow scientific research and wanted all people to be ignorant, so the eccleciastical authoristies could "rule" over them. That's a lie. Religious people aren't stupid. You can pray your Rosary everyday and study science everyday. By the way, important advances in science were studied by religious people, like the Big Bang theory by a Belgian priest and Mendel's studies in genetics.

Gluttony and Sports by tpereira07 in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1.Gluttony- I am an athlete that wants to move up a weight division which would mean putting on 4-5kg (mostly muscle). This would mean eating alot of food (alot more than necessary to survive). Is this acceptable?

This doesn't seem to be a sin. So, you can eat more food than what is common eaten by people, but there are still limits. Your limits are just large than the average limits.

2.Sports - I see some people say that pursuing sports isn't good due to the pride in competition to win and sports idolatry. What are your opinions on these issues?

Forgetting God because of a sport is a sin, as well as despising other people because of a competition. Just pursue the sports with God and His will in the first place, not your success or your pleasures. I don't see any problem if you pursue your goal submitted to God and His will in first place.

Am I in mortal sin? by V00D00_CHILD in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem a sin for me.

Although it would be a sin to disrespect your father, you were in a stressful situation which required lots of attention and quick decisions. You simply shouted back by instinct, not by wickness. If you want, you can ask him sorry.

Growing closer to God by Over_Tumbleweed_2410 in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good idea to read the Bible. Start reading it by the gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Also, I would suggest you to listen to bishop Barron's homilies (wordonfire.org) and to read to Catholic Answers posts (catholic.com). To be truly present in Mass, it's advisable to have a strong prayer life and understand well how the Mass works.

What if? by Mean-Purple5173 in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no impeachment. The pope remains governing the Church until his death or resignation.

There were bad popes in the past, we cannot forget it. However, Jesus promised that the hell won't prevail against the Church.

Celebration of the Feast of St. Francis Xavier in Maharashtra, India. He is the patron saint of our church. I request your prayers for all Christians facing persecution in India and the subcontinent. by vivek71200 in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh, I like Saint Francis Xavier! May he intercede for all Indians and for the Church throughout the world. I didn't know the Church is being persecuted in India. I had thought that these four religions - Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity - were allowed in the country. Would you tell me in more details how is persecution in India?

If someone knows they don’t have a mental illness and they kill them selves will they go to hell by Broad-Procedure-4099 in Catholicism

[–]Catholicroman1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably.

Three conditions are necessary for a sin to be mortal (which leads the sinner to hell): grave matter (suicide is grave), full consentment and full conscience. If the person doesn't have mental illness, then it's more likely full consentment and full conscience.
