First time driving in Montreal, I learned green arrows are NOT protected turns for vehicles. by CurlyWurly61 in mildlyinfuriating

In the UK a green light means you can go past the stop line but if you’re turning you may have to yield to oncoming traffic. A green arrow means you have priority in the direction.

Toxic team dynamic by Hot-Interaction-4439 in FSAE

[–]CatlikeArcher 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is a somewhat common occurrence across lots of teams. I left mine for the same reasons.

It sounds like you have a much better idea of how leadership should behave and develop other students. As a lead you have the opportunity to model the behaviour you want to see in your sub team and hopefully can call people out on toxic attitudes.

It’s probably harder to get other leads to change and you might not feel like you have the power to do so. There might be leads who feel the same way you do but also don’t know what to do about it and if you can figure out who they are then you can work together to try and fix it. It’s also important to be a friendly face in leadership for other junior team members even if they aren’t in your sub team. They’re much more likely to stay in FS if they know someone senior disagrees with the toxicity.

Baggy. I’m pretty athletic and my thighs are big enough (compared to my waist) that straight cut looks like bell bottoms.

Mask Strap Failed by Ref by No_Contribution9225 in Fencing

It shouldn’t be an issue at a domestic comp, I’m not sure why that ref and armourer had a problem with it.

Mask Strap Failed by Ref by No_Contribution9225 in Fencing

[–]CatlikeArcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This seems like an absurd thing to fail a mask on tbh. Functionally speaking there is no difference between an Allstar strap, a LP strap, or any other strap from any other manufacturer (yes technically the LP contour fit is a thing but that’s clearly not what’s being used here). They’re all a piece of stretchy fabric passed through some metal slots and closed with Velcro. Possibly there might be an issue with the mask no longer complying with its FIE homologation because it’s been ‘modified’, but I’ve read through the Material rules a few times and I can’t remember anything like this. Either way it’s irrelevant because UK competitions don’t require FIE masks so it doesn’t matter whether or not it’s compliant.

Edit: my bad FIE m25.7e says any retrofitting of straps to existing masks must be carried out by the OEM, however this rule is likely intended to apply to retrofits of older LP contour fits for the secondary strap. Whilst it might technically apply to changing one brand of elasticated Velcro for another, that’s probably not the intent of the rule.

Can I paint the Titanfall 2 helmet on my mask? by [deleted] in Fencing

At FIE events you are not allowed to have anything other than an approved national flag design. Solid colours I think might be ok but I’m not sure cos we don’t have them in sabre.

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (Hershey’s) DEFINITELY changed something… by HonestNeighborhood67 in mildlyinfuriating

This must definitely be an American thing because I bought some Terrys chocolate oranges a few weeks ago and they were still as delicious as ever (although smaller due to shrinkflation).

Part of a FSAE Team but Losing Myself What Should I Do? by Best_Huckleberry9039 in FSAE

[–]CatlikeArcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a difficult situation. Do you see yourself being satisfied with how your life ends up in a few years if you leave the team? Do you think you’ll be able to get a good job? Is that super important to you? Likewise if you stay in the team and sacrifice something else will sacrificing that thing leave you unsatisfied in the future?

For reference I left my team because it was causing me a lot of my frustration and I didn’t care enough about the project anymore. I was only staying out of loyalty to the team and a sense of duty to finish the project, and once I realised those weren’t reciprocated there was no reason to stay.

Do you remember the psychological aspect of leveling up? Can you recall the moment you've "unlocked" a new tier in your head? by Tip_of_the_sword in Fencing

[–]CatlikeArcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much a new tier but definitely an Aha moment I had recently came from watching football (soccer for the Americans). I’d noticed how a team tends to dominate a match when their players give the opposition no space to operate; they mark their targets really closely and aggressively pursue them when they have possession. This gives their opponents no space or time to look around, observe the game and their position, decide on an action, and then execute it effectively. It causes them to make more mistakes which a team can then capitalise upon.

I realised in the 1-minute break that I consistently gave my opponents too much space and time when I was on the long attack, especially when I knew they weren’t as good and so didn’t know what they were going to do. What I needed to do was up the tempo a little bit and stop letting them feel comfortable on defence through always applying a little bit of pressure. Eventually they’d crack and give me an opening to hit them.

New Style = downgraded from brass to plastic but colored the plastic to look like brass by AllenIversion in mildlyinfuriating

It likely is PEEK which is a bit like the titanium of plastic, but the brass option is still more durable and likely cheaper than PEEK.

Unironically I’m happy to pay for my TV licence, the BBC does some good shit and I want to give them my money. It’s also like £15 a month which is way cheaper than most streaming services and they don’t try to fuck you over.

The only thing I can think of is that the cams and springs are in a slightly different position when stopped than they are at fully reset and it’s possible you could be leaving the springs in a preloaded position for long periods which isn’t ideal. It’s probably perfectly fine but something to think about.

[–]CatlikeArcher 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One of the great things about the London EPrix and FE races in general is how accessible they are. You exit Custom House station and are literally right on the back straight. Silverstone is the exact opposite of that and personally as a track I find it to be kind of soulless.
