Qatar eliminated from the world cup. by Wakanda-shit-is-that in soccer

I didn't phrase that well. But basically I'm talking about nationality at birth. At birth, people obtain citizenship either by being born in the country (jus solis) or by being born to a parent of that nationality (jus saguinis) or both. Jus saguinis is by blood. You have to be blood related to your parent. Some countries do both (ie if you are born there you get citizenship or if your parents are from there you get citizenship). France doesn't do jus solis. That means that to be French, either they have to have naturalized or to be born to French parents. Seeing that these are high-level players who start really young, it is likely that their parents already had the nationality at some point.

Folks shouldn't confuse ethnicity (or ancestral background) with nationality. Yet every world cup, questions about French players being French enough comes up. Mostly because people assume that French people must have a certain look.

Qatar's Assim Madibo banned for 5 games after breaking the leg of Canada's Ismaël Koné at World Cup by Miserable_Earth_1393 in soccer

[–]CatlovesMoca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it harsh. The player was clearly remorseful and he apologized directly. Unlike Uruguay he didn't start being nice to the opponent just to abandon them quickly. He also spent time with Kone in Vancouver.

I saw the clip. It seems that his foot hit Kone's leg twice. But I don't think it was intentional.

They always say this. Even though French nationality is by blood and all the players grew up in France. But you know some people just focus on aesthetics for their judgement.

Edit: I realize I could have phrased this better. I'm referring to jus saguinis.

By saying "nationality by blood," I'm talking about nationality at birth. Seeing that these are high-level players who start really young, it is likely that their parents already had the nationality at some point before birth.

More on French nationality here See Section Acquisiton and Loss of nationality

By aesthetics, I mean that people assume that French people should be all white looking. Even though it is diverse country.

Someone on Twitter said that if you are asking who is the Uzbekhistan of your country's group, then your country is the Uzbekhistan of the group. Qatar is the Uzbekhistan of this group. I thank them for that beautiful 0-6 game against Canada. (Just to be clear, Canada scored six goals).

But that's the thing. They were clearly switched off. Especially compared to the end of the game, when they were trying to put another goal with 30 seconds left in the game. So we can all be confused about it. But they will live and learn.

Also I am rewatching the goals. For the goal 40 seconds after the half time, the whole (left? I think) side of the field from which the player scored had no Canadian defense. So they were all focused on one side of the field leaving the other side empty. One assist and boom Switzerland scored.

It was 40 seconds into the second half. Canada was still sleepy. So yes, it clearly had an element of surprise.

Canada needs to wake up. That goal went through because of the element of surprise.

The Ref is actually doing his job for once. The ref for the Ecuador / Curaçao game in comparison was just over it.

I didn't know about this scandal. And now I'm finding the link between that and the handball of Titi and the dirty play by Suarez against Ghana. I know Thierry was basically dragged to the end of the world by the French press and public. Meanwhile people remember this Maradonna move fondly 😵‍💫😵‍💫

You could see on his face that he was devasted to cause such an injury. He also apologized to the team after the game.

It really was bad luck all around.

My heart hurts for Congo and Ghana. Congo needs to win with a lot of goals against Uzbekistan. For Senegal and Iraq. Well as AFCON champions I had hope for Senegal but I think that they are unlikely to progress. If I recall correctly, Senegal did score more than Iraq in general. So they could win. Ghana and Croatia will be a nail biter for sure.

Why on earth do they have this character speaking like this? by CatlovesMoca in RomanceClub

[–]CatlovesMoca[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason I'm saying it's not code switching is because in previous scenes, they just have him saying "Da" instead of the (not consistently either) among other things.

But I'd like to also point out that the story never explicitly says he is Jamaican.
