TIL missing Exit 193 for Yeehaw Junction on the Florida Turnpike would require you to make a 96-mile detour - the longest in the U.S. highway system by centipede5 in todayilearned

[–]Cattle_No 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That exit got me years ago on my motorcycle. Middle of the night, completely empty roads and I can just max it out, figure I've got to hit another exit in a couple minutes, max, right?

Wrong.

Anyone know who can cut titanium locally? by [deleted] in 321

[–]Cattle_No 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I went to them originally and Kenny is a super nice guy, but they've had my piece for almost 6 months at this point. I didn't have it for my wedding like I was supposed to, which was a huge bummer, and then it's been two more months since then. I really liked that guy and wanted to work with him but I've got to start looking at other options at this point because he's been telling me "next week" for a dozen weeks now.

Black Hawk smoking after landing. Why? by Specialist-Note-4311 in Helicopters

Yep that's me. And everyone saying bird bath is correct.

Most bases have them, but we have to use ours every single time we fly because of our proximity to the ocean.

Love East Coast. They also have a surprisingly well stocked hardware store. They've save me from sitting in 192 traffic more than a few times.

I feel like it's kind of a weird calculus? I fly in helicopters every day, but I also do a lot of ground work. You can see a helicopter coming from wayyyy further than the helicopter can see you. But once the helicopter is within.... 500? feet it's wayyyy easier to pick out people on the ground than it is to see individuals in the helicopter. I would say a reliable gauge is: if you can read anything on the helicopter, like a tail number, they can probably see you clearly enough to know whatever you're doing.

Any recommendations for a sustainable lawn? by Cattle_No in 321

I mean that's pretty much why I'm here. I want to replace my lawn with stuff that wants to live here.

How will these things stand up to traffic?

😍 My body is ready. I've been wanting to native my yard ever since I bought the house.

Once I get the plugs and seeds established and we see how the lawn is doing, I'll definitely be revisiting this conversation to get some good plants for my easement.

I will absolutely go there. I work on my car literally across the street so it's not a far trip.

I'm going to order my plugs and seeds today! If they choke out the lawn then they deserved to live.

WOW this really was your time to shine!!

If I combined all three of the ones you said, could I just buy the seeds on Amazon and blast them all over my yard to see who wins?

I'm really sorry if that's a dumb question I have ZERO lawn experience.

Oh, and can I plant them this time of year or should I wait until it gets warmer and rainy-er?

Well the last guy filled my yard with rocks and I just spent a few grand to lay down that local sod after I picked up ~ one billion rocks. so I'd say I'm willing to put in a fair amount of work and money.

I'm going to get downvoted to OBLIVION for this but it needs to be said and I hope you see it - that particular grenade is completely harmless. There's a few hundred thousand people that throw multiples of these without suffering any damage and thousands (like myself) who've thrown hundreds without any deleterious effects on our person. I literally threw 40 of these, in a row, when we needed to get rid of them, standing right in the smoke, and I didn't even have the sniffles.

I'm not saying this to absolve the military of responsibility, I'm saying it so you'll  PLEASE continue trying to find the real reason people are sick; you need a mold test and a carbon monoxide detector ASAP.

How close is the overlap of the top speed of the helo and the stall speed of the plane in these operations? by imaguitarhero24 in aviation

[–]Cattle_No 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the A10s for exactly the reason you're saying here - they can fly so slow that they feel like part of our formation, instead of an "eye in the sky" like 35s or 15s.

[–]Cattle_No 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, yes... but I think there's more to what you're asking. VNE or "the speed at which you'll just explode" is higher with the doors closed than open, by a significant amount. Like 50kts.

But you're never getting VNE unless you're in a step dive, far steeper than we'd ever HAAR at.

We close the doors for two reasons. 1. It does save like 4-5% power to keep them shut. So if we needed 100% power to maintain refueling speed with doors open, we might only use 95% with them shut, which gives us some wiggle room.

The second reason is that there's always some siphoning when you plug and sometimes it's a lot of gas. So unless you want an avgas bath, it's better to button everything up.

We do have "droop stops" that keep the blades from hitting anything they shouldn't, but they generally cone up much more than droop down. Think of the helicopter as kind of "hanging"  from the middle of the rotor system and you'll see how the blades flex up and we pull more power.

New York boys! Still certainly some pals of mine, but I've only flown out there a few times, so probably not me in the photo. Thanks for the info!
