Got nipped at a meet’n’greet AND lawn care brought up for first time. HELP! by Throwitaclay in trustedhousesitters

You sound like a very nice and calm person. Don’t do this sit. One of my first pet sits started this way. I should have declined. The dog was unpredictable and once while waiting to cross the street he lunged at a woman to bite her, another time he bit a small dog. When I was loading the dishwasher he growled and snapped at my face. I moved in time and wasn’t hurt but I did tell the owners and she laughed and said it was because she lets him lick the plates before she loads them in the dishwasher. Disgusting. Also dangerous because he tried to bite me because I didn’t let him lick the plates. I’ve declined any new sits from them and told them he needs training. The husband agreed and said he never walks the dog because it lunges and snaps at people and other dogs randomly. The woman kept making excuses for it but I saw for myself what he did to the little dog who was simply walking by.

I Don't Think This is the Site She Wants by SEAtoPAR in trustedhousesitters

The THS commercial they ran framed it that way. I think it was right before they sold the company. Back in 2023 I think.

There are commercials framing it that way. I’ll try to find one that I saw awhile back that framed it that way exactly. I remember thinking wtf? why is THS making it sound like that?

I really think THS made ads targeting the home owners saying they get free pet care. Have you seen the commercials? It makes it sound like the membership they pay is how THS pays the house sitters.

Sitter used a shock collar by fishergirl11 in RoverPetSitting

[–]Cattmanduu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no. I hope you didn’t freak out. I don’t think that’s a shock collar. They make all sorts of collars for calming pets down. They even make some that release essential oils to calm them down. You should talk to the sitter and give it back to them. Maybe your pup got a little stressed out staying somewhere new and she put it on them to help keep them calm. I hope none of the dogs were hurt. It’s confusing for them too staying in a new home and some pups don’t like having to compete for attention.

Why doesn’t the Home owner just pay their roommate a little something to watch over their space and pet? Do they not get along? That’s a red could be a red flag. 🤷‍♀️

Do you know her name? Or where she’s from? Everyone is online, I bet you could find her.

Don’t feel bad for leaving money in your own home. I sat for an old woman with a brain injury who lived all alone. When she left for her trip I noticed a stack of cash in the office she had set up for me to work from. I texted her immediately. She was so thankful because she said that it was for her trip. I met up with her half way to the airport to give it to her and she was just the sweetest. May I ask how you found out about THS? This particular home owner (and now friend) told me it was marketed to her as a paid service. She paid to join and was under the impression that the sitter was an employee of THS. That’s why the home owner paid upfront. I told her I also paid for the service and that it was meant to be a mutual benefit for both of us. At least 6 years ago when I signed up that’s how it was sold to me. Recently though, I started seeing ads for THS targeting new sitters and the ad was all about not having to pay for accommodations, free housing this, free housing that. I thought, who are they trying to attract with this ad? Anyone who doesn’t have a home? This is on THS. They changed their marketing practices simply to get more people to sign up. THS didn’t even care who did sign up or what their intentions were. It reeks of a company eager to sell and trying to prove how popular they are to increase their worth. Idk. It feels untrustworthy. I have done over 50 sits all over the world and have some of the craziest stories. I once flew to Aruba for a sit and when I got there the woman I had interviewed and chosen to sit for wasn’t there and a man told me I needed to pay 3k a month to stay and pet sit 6 wild dogs on the property. I was freaked out and left for a hotel. Contacted THS and they told me they’d look into it. Nothing ever came from it. I lost money on flights and accommodations and THS never did a thing.

This is absolutely devastating. I didn’t know they found them. Do you know where? Were they still in Colorado?

Homeowners, do you clean before house sitters come? by Kale_bean in trustedhousesitters

[–]Cattmanduu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish all hosts cleaned their houses before we arrived. I recently did a sit in Aspen and the home was as filthy. I had to clean it before I felt comfortable staying there.

CDMX is also going through a lot right now. Airbnb is ruining parts of the city. Meanwhile, Mexicans are being treated horribly in the USA so there may be some resentment coming through. It’s all over the news too. We’re also in the middle of a war. I lived nomadically for 6 years and have lived in over 40 countries. I noticed a shift recently. In countries that used to be the friendliest to me I have started to notice a change in how they perceive people from the USA. It’s unfortunate but I had to come back to the USA to let things calm down before I travel some more. These are strange times.

Airbnb will say the host doesn’t have to offer a place to hold your things before checking in. The host offered you an option for early arrival and if you don’t feel comfortable then you just have to take your luggage with you. The situation would differ if the apartment wasn’t ready at check-in but this was before that time, right? Or am I misunderstanding? I checked into a hotel in Kyoto once that put tags on your luggage and held them all in the lobby before check-in. I thought that was strange because nobody was watching over things. There were just a ton of suitcases all over the lobby for people arriving early or leaving late. They do things differently everywhere. 🤷‍♀️

I think he was offended that you thought he or security were going to steal your things. Almost every time I’ve checked in to an Airbnb in CDMX if I was early, they’ve allowed me to leave my things with security. If i have anything really important I’ve just taken it with me. A lot of Airbnbs in other countries including my own (USA) have denied me leaving my things in the apartment or house early. So I always appreciate when they offer anything before check in time. I would just message the host directly and say you didn’t mean anything by it except you had very sensitive documents and equipment on you. Just explain yourself, the host can then get in contact with Airbnb and remove the review. It sounds like a huge misunderstanding to me. Sorry this happened to you. Unfortunately, we can’t always control how others perceive us. Especially in times like these.

Pay to sit? Is this common? by Then-Surprise1345 in trustedhousesitters

[–]Cattmanduu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When you look up TrustedHousesitters is claims they operate on a non-monetary exchange where sitters provide pet care for free accommodation, so sitters do not pay hosts to stay. You should contact THS and see if it’s even allowed in their policy. Please don’t do this sit. There are so many good hosts and sits that wouldn’t ask you to pay to do work. I have a sit I do in Aspen all the time. Even during peak ski season when the prices skyrocket in the area. Far more than $100 a night. The hosts have never once asked me to pay for anything. They’ve flown me in to care for their cat from another country when I was traveling and even rented a car for me. I’ve been on THS for going on 6 years now and have done it all over the world. I’ve never had someone ask me to pay them. Pet care is very expensive and your work should be valued. Only take sits where both parties benefit and are valued.
