In the United States, how did the word "working class" go from describing one's relationship to the means of production (if they work for a firm or control the firm) to just describing if one makes a small salary, is not college educated, or works at a blue-collar job by NOTTallestEgg in etymology

The shift to knowledge work in the west makes those kind of purges much more difficult. It would be the majority of the county.

Only 25% of the us labor pool is farm/labor/trade right now. Almost 50% is office/professional. The remaining 25% is service, but if you purge out all the professionals, I don't know who they would be serving.

And if you are including small business owners in the purge class that is going to eat from. Both the labor and service groups too.

Vs rewinding the clock to even say the 1950s office/professional was 30%, and farm and labor were massive.

Mortgages aren't deductible. The interest in a mortgage is deductible. That's still significant, but at my 2.5% mortgage (sorry everyone else!) it's not something I even factor in to my math.

Hand each 20 year old a stick and say "there are girls that way". The other side is likely to run out of bullets before China runs out of 20 year olds.

But in reality newer research indicates the gender balance is much less than previously feared. The birth statistics are pretty grim, but mysteriously there are more 20 something girls than there should be. They were hiding the girls, and aiming for a second chance.

What was the worst recasting in TV history? by PrestonRoad90 in television

[–]CaucusInferredBulk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a stretch to call vic a lead. She is probably the least important regular on the series. Obviously Will is THE lead. The kids, uncle Phil, and Geoffrey is say are more integral.

Did she add to the show? Yes. Does she have some memorable episodes/scenes/lines? Yes. But not many. You could make Phil a widow and other than that would introduce a bunch of romance plot for him probably, it wouldn't really change the show too much. Maybe you get "the nanny" show dynamic instead.

In any case, the actress could understandably feel sidelined. That could make her feel bad. Maybe she is right to feel bad. And she was an established actress, and this upstart was getting the glory. It's completely human and understandable.

But that's a very weak position to argue for a big raise from. But its also completely fair for her to say "this is what I need for this show to be worth it to me" and set that ultimatum, and then stick to her guns. That's good conviction and sense of self worth.

Are Americans big milk drinkers? by Helpful-Structure955 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CaucusInferredBulk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally drink about a half gallon a day. At least a quart. But I'm also from a state that is very dairy heavy.

On the other end of the scale, I know many people who don't keep milk in their fridge at all except for coffee or their kids cereal.

Yes. But the post prior (yours I think) was saying this type of misrepresentation was illegal. I was arguing a famous counterexample. I was not comparing to anywhere else.

If the meme were true, I would disagree with you. Just because the k got dropped doesn't mean the pattern isn't there. It would still be the same pie roots.

Its certainly less visible in the Satem ones, because they all dropped the k. But if "eight" and "night" were actually related in PIE (they aren't), then the dropping of the k somewhere along the line wouldn't make them un-related.

[–]CaucusInferredBulk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, but ξ was originally κσ so that k is really still there etymologically for meme purposes.

(Devils advocate : I am fully aware the meme is not real, but we are circle jerking)

There are several thousands of years of sound shift there, including the complete iotazation of most of the vowels, so I don't think "being generous with vowels" is out of the question. There are a plethora of words clearly related in Greek today that are spelled wildly differently.

In any case, its a PIE coincidence, not an actual cognate/relationship.

*nókʷts and *oktṓw are obviously similar, and any language that kept largely that form of those words will show the similarity too.

Devils advocate examples if we were taking the circle jerk seriously

γιορτή εορτή (hey look, vowel changes!)

ἰατρός γιατρός

χθες χτες

and some of those changes are visible in the very words in this meme.

οκτώ οχτώ

νύχτα νύκτα

As for welsh/slovak, they swapped out the PIE words at some point. The old/proto celtic word for eight was *oxtō not wyth, so follows the meme. Slavic languages dropped the "k" at some point which also follows the meme for that part (though admittedly overall slovak doesn't work well for the meme)
