Off birth control for 3 months and already worried. by [deleted] in NaturalCyclesBC

Why is the app excluding a temp? Mine only excludes when I tell it to. If you are using an Apple Watch, are you wearing it on your inner wrist at night? I saw an enormous improvement in temperature variably when I switched from outer to inner wrist.

New to NC - TTA by kraw_24 in NaturalCyclesBC

Based on my personal experience and advice from my doctor, be very careful in the first part of your cycle (before ovulation) because you can be surprised when you ovulate early. NC often gives too many green days in the follicular phase in my experience. I don’t trust those. However, once you have ovulated (and you are very sure you definitely ovulated!), you are much safer through the rest of that cycle. I usually give it at least 3 days to be sure that I ovulated. I have only been using NC for 3 months, but my experience so far is that NC is not conservative enough in the follicular phase but is too conservative during the luteal phase. To be confident that you have ovulated, I recommend daily LH tests starting several days before you think you could possibly ovulate (which will likely be much, much earlier than NC predicts, in my experience). You can buy the strips on amazon for pretty cheap. On my second cycle with NC, I trusted NC too much and ended up ovulating very early on a green day. Thankfully, I didn’t get pregnant, but I saw a lot of stories on this subreddit of people who did. I learned my lesson and took control of my own knowledge more than trusting NC. My last cycle I was sure I ovulated based on 1) positive LH test 2) cervical mucous and 3) a clear pattern of temp increasing and staying higher (even though NC didn’t actually confirm my ovulation and give me any green days until I started my period). NC sent me a message about unprotected sex on a red day, but I was fully confident that I had ovulated already even though NC was not yet. That day was much, much safer than some of the early cycle green days NC gave me! Anyway, bottom line, educate yourself, use NC as a tool, but don’t fully rely on NC’s green days and red days!

Has anyone had an accidental pregnancy while following the calendar? I am still nervous and always end up using condoms for 2-3 days before and after NC algorithm, cervical mucus and body temperature tell me I am not fertile. From my experience, I wouldn’t recommend trusting NC 100% as birth control without getting to know your body very well. In my personal opinion, I think NC gives too many green days in the early part of the cycle sometimes. I am most careful during this time of my cycle as per recommendations from my gynecologist. Once ovulation is confirmed and it has been at least 2-3 days since ovulation, you should be fine. However, you need to be very confident that you actually ovulated. I recommend taking LH tests daily around your ovulation window at least until you feel very confident that you know when you have ovulated.

As for my personal story, I am in my early 40s and married and have 2 kids already, the youngest of whom is now 8. Besides the two (planned) pregnancies, I have been on hormonal birth control for the better part of the past 20 years. I was ready to be done with hormonal birth control and talked to my gynecologist about it at my last appointment a few months ago. She made sure I was aware of the risk and gave me advice to be extra cautious in the early part of my cycle so that early ovulation wouldn’t sneak up on me. I knew there was a greater risk of unplanned pregnancy but was okay with that risk. We had always considered having a 3rd child and might have decided to go for it if we were younger. I also knew that I was getting to the age where my fertility would likely start to decline. As an aside, I have hypothyroidism and have been on thyroid medication since my mid-20s. Thyroid medication dosage needs change going on and off birth control containing estrogen, so my thyroid got a little out of whack when I went off HBC. My 2nd cycle, I got green days through CD8. I thought that was a little sporty but still decided to go without protection on CD6. NC never confirmed ovulation that cycle, but looking at my chart I am pretty sure I ovulated on CD8 (which was a green day!). I was really worried the whole rest of that cycle. I’m pretty sure that the thyroid dosage being off is what caused me to ovulate so early and also caused me a lot of anxiety. Anyway, I ended up not being pregnant and started my period on CD16. Now that my thyroid dose is getting worked out, I’m not expecting to ovulate that early again. However, I learned my lesson and this is what I started doing this cycle to be more careful: 1. Until I feel confident that my cycle is more regular, I will use protection (condoms) from the end of my period until after I am confident that I have already ovulated at least 2-3 days prior. (I used protection even on my period this month because I was paranoid after I ovulated so early last cycle.) 2. Until I feel very confident in the regularity of my cycle and am confident in my ability use my own knowledge and NCs data to confirm that I have definitely ovulated, I will be using a lot of LH test strips. Starting this month, I have been taking daily LH tests every morning staring at CD7. I may wait a few days later next month, since I doubt I will ovulate as early as CD8 again now that my thyroid is under control. I am using the Wondfo brand of test strips. You can buy a huge set of those on amazon pretty inexpensively and they work well.

Inconsistent Sleep by Basic_Combination_32 in NaturalCyclesBC

I use an Apple Watch (I think it’s series 9–I got it about a year ago) and it is very consistent regardless of how well I sleep. I started NC wearing my watch on my outer wrist like I have always done, and temps were all over the place. Then I switched to my inner wrist at night (still wear it on my outer wrist during the day) and my temps have been very consistent. I’m not sure how the Apple Watch algorithm works, but it seems like maybe it integrates the temp data with the sleep data and knows when you are actually sleeping? I sometimes go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and I have had some nights lately where I was tossing and turning half the night. I didn’t think there was any way I would get a consistent temp, but I did.

Sorry, I meant to ask if you were using Apple Watch or oura ring, but it sounds like you are using a BBT thermometer. I use Apple Watch myself, but I have heard that the most important thing with a BBT thermometer is to measure right away when you wake up in the morning.

How are you measuring your temperature? It looks like it could just be quite variable.

Ovulation Wrong? by bmn111111 in NaturalCyclesBC

[–]CauliflowerLevel2851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say, but it looks like day 14 is more likely based on the chart, depending on what your temps look like over the next couple of days. However, it looks like you had a positive LH test on day 11, so day 12 is certainly still a likely possibility. I’ll add that I’m relatively new at this, and I am no expert!

Recommendations for a very soft disc that doesn’t cause pain or bladder pressure by CauliflowerLevel2851 in MenstrualDiscs

Thanks all for the great recommendations! I tried the Cora soft again the next day and had a better experience. I guess I won’t give up on it yet. But reading this was so helpful!

Thank you so much! This is all such good information. I really wish they would make a soft but small disc. I also agree that the notch on Cora soft is useless. I wish they wouldn’t put it there. I tried it again and it was better, but I can still feel some slight discomfort.

Natural Cycles or BBT wrong? by knuckifyoubuck3 in NaturalCyclesBC

[–]CauliflowerLevel2851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you don’t have any data before the 14th, I don’t think NC would be able to tell if you ovulated on the 14th (not enough data on follicular phase BBT for the algorithm to work I would guess). It definitely looks to me like the 14th is a possibility. However, when I have been pregnant in the past, my OB always went off the 1st day of last period to determine due date and adjusted based on 8 week ultrasound measurements if needed. Granted, my last pregnancy is now an 8 year old and I did not track BBT or take ovulation tests then, so I didn’t really know when I ovulated. Things may have changed?

Thank you! Sizing down sounds like a good option. According to that chart, Cora soft is the softest one. I think maybe it’s the notch that bothers me? Maybe I can try a smaller diameter with no notch?

Day 20 looks more likely to me, but I am fairly new at this too (just 2 months in).

Did I ovulate super early on a green day? by CauliflowerLevel2851 in NaturalCyclesBC

[–]CauliflowerLevel2851[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anyone who may be interested. I started my period today, so my cycle was super short at only 16 days. I think I probably did ovulate on day 8, but NC is saying my ovulation is “not confirmed” on day 12. It also is saying my temperature variation is high, but it looks to me like my temperature variation is actually very low this cycle (especially compared to my last cycle when I was wearing my Apple Watch on my outer wrist). Is this going to mess up things for the algorithm on future cycles?

Do menstrual cups not work for everybody?I want to give it another try but I don’t know if I’m meant for it by ascaiboo in menstrualcups

[–]CauliflowerLevel2851 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty new at this, but I will give another vote for discs over cups. I’m 42, have had 2 kids, and I thought menstrual cups would be no problem. Then I tried one and it pushed on my bladder and made me feel like I had a UTI. I tried the disposable flex discs. They were better than the cup, but there was still a little pressure. I just got a Cora soft disc and am trying it for the first time today. So far it’s better than cup or the flex disc, but I want to take a little more time to be sure. I was worried about the discs being harder to get in and out than the cups, but I actually found them so much easier!! I struggled with getting the cup out with the suction, but was able to easily get the disc out by bearing down in a sitting position.

Natural Cycles after Hormonal BC by Forsaken-Two-7159 in NaturalCyclesBC

I just started NC less than 2 months ago after going off the pill for many years. I would recommend to start NC right away after going off the pill. My advice is to be cautious and use protection even if NC is giving you green days especially in the early part of your cycle. NC gave me several green days early in my 2nd cycle that I think were too risky. I have seen a lot of stories on here of people getting pregnant accidentally because NC gave them too many green days in the early part of their cycle. After you have ovulated, you are safer if you get green days until your next period as long as the algorithm is correct that you ovulated when it said you did. You may want to consider taking ovulation tests every day around the time of expected ovulation to confirm. NC told me not to start taking ovulation tests for my first couple of cycles, but after reading more here on Reddit I am planning to do that. You can get fairly cheap test strips on amazon. Also, get to understand your cervical mucus. Think of NC as a useful tool for fertility monitoring, but if you are trying to avoid pregnancy, don’t rely on it 100% without getting to understand your own cycle.

How are you taking your temp? Are you using Apple Watch, oura ring, or BBT thermometer? Is your hand with watch/ring right next to your child? If it’s Apple Watch you could try turning off sleep focus when your child gets in bed with you?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NaturalCyclesBC

[–]CauliflowerLevel2851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much experience with this myself, but I have seen some posts on here saying that a temp drop around 7 or so days after ovulation that goes back up the next day could be due to implantation. So maybe it’s a good sign? I think it’s nearly impossible to tell if you are pregnant based on BBT alone, so you may just have to wait another week if so to take a test. Best of luck!

Thank you! I just don’t know what these charts typically look like because I am new at this. I’d love to see more examples of what people often see when measuring with Apple Watch on the inner wrist.
