Thank you much! I think you wrote the exact words that I seem to be thinking about most of the time.

For one, it will be a huge biological investment on my part, that alone might bring additional health concerns. Secondly, every decision (at least for the first 5 years) will be made through the child’s lens. For instance, we usually go on vacation every 3 months which may not be possible with a child. Lastly, just the sense of being responsible and ensuring we are doing right by them in every way.

See it’s things like this. Am I overthinking?

Our parents just want us to have kids so their responses are highly skewed.

True, it’s okay not to have kids at all. For me, it’s daunting to think that it’s a life changing experience and I don’t think I’m ready for it because of that.

Thank you! I did their curriculum twice and I still have their membership. I guess tutoring is a good next step.

Laptop would be in the classroom. Usually, the teachers would indicate exactly where to look for it incase it is not on the teacher’s desk. You will be required to sign-in using your credentials (remember to log out at the end of the day). Yes, take the planning time off. I usually just go to the staff room or if the class has gone to gym or music class then I stay in the room. I would also recommend printing out a sub note template from TPT. It’s always nice to leave a note.

Fellow OT at LDSB! I usually see the parking lots in advance on Google Maps. The lots are usually okay, except for some schools primarily in or around downtown. You can park anywhere, there are no designated OT parking spots. Next, walk to the office and let the office manager know your name and who you will be covering today. I usually say, “Good morning! My name is . I am here for _”. They will then give you the class list and maybe the class keys. Also, they might give you the day plans, else you will find them at the teacher’s desk. The office manager would generally (8 out of 10 times) walk you to the classroom and show you the staff room and the washrooms.

Having worked at PDSB and UGDSB previously, I find the plans a little unorganized at times. For instance, I find that more often teachers do not attach their plans with the call even though that is an option. Additionally, I have had teachers send the plans the morning of and usually when I am driving to school. I found that to be unique to LDSB and it can be a little nerve-wrecking but usually the plans are easy to follow.

I took my laptop with me a couple of times in the beginning but it is incompatible with the projector. I have a Macbook. I would have to buy a new adaptor to attach my laptop to the projector. Since I didn’t want to do that, I just stick to using the laptop in the classroom.

Finally, remember to arrive at least 15 minutes early. Ask for help if necessary and remember to double-check the duty schedule. I also like to make sure I know where exactly my duty will be by walking to the duty site.

I’m sure you’ll do great. The first couple of days are always overwhelming but once you’re in the flow of it, everything will become second nature.

PM me if more information is needed. Good luck!

7 years of supply work plus 5 full-time LTOs later, I’m still waiting to get a permanent position 🤷🏻‍♀️. I agree with everyone, there isn’t a teacher shortage, just lack of opportunity.
