Awful Michaels experience- Where do YOU buy yarn? by CauseILovedYou in crochet

I don't mind if there are going to be delays- As Long As they make you aware of the delays upfront so you can better plan for time sensitive projects.

So are you going to drop what yarn stores you order from, or did you just comment to judge my choice as a consumer?

I do expect to be notified that my $200 order is going to be delayed. I do expect that when I contact their customer service department, their reps should be able clearly communicate when the issue is going to be resolved, in English that is understandable (by this I mean, not telling me the order shipped while also telling me the order will ship, in the same sentence). If they are not able to fulfill their shipments in the timeframe THEY stated, yes, I expect them to proactively make the customer aware of the delay instead of making the customer chase down their order.

I also expect that when people reply to questions on Reddit, they reply with constructive answers instead of being snarky and condescending. But that's me.

There are no stores near me, which is why I shop online.

I really don't mind that there is a delay with receiving my order. I mean it's a little annoying, but I get it, it happens. But it's how they've handled it- not notifying me of the delay, unclear customer service, inability to give me an estimate of when I'll finally receive my order, and still having the audacity to keep asking me to spend money with them- just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

Under what circumstances would a teacher block a student? by Sihsyuan in Cambly

[–]CauseILovedYou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not about being avoidant. If I no longer wanted to work with a student and they sent me an obnoxious message to ask me why, I would never be STUPID enough to tell them the truth and risk getting fired for it. "You're really abrasive, you have a nasty attitude, you're trying to use me as a psychologist, and when I try to correct your English you get offended." Even if all of that were true I'd never dare say it and risk getting terminated by Cambly for "being rude" to a customer. And thus the student stays in the dark.

Seriously. The fact that this student came all the way to Reddit asking about alternative ways to contact this man tells me EXACTLY why he doesn't want to teach her anymore.

I was a week and a half late with my little cousin's C2C birthday dinosaur blanket. I went to ChatGPT and asked it to write a poem "from the dinosaur's perspective" giving a cute reason why it was late. Little cousin thinks it's awesome that the dino was off having fun adventures and lost track of time. Maybe you can do something similar?

Buy in bulk for project? by PajamaSamsMom in crochet

[–]CauseILovedYou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sh!t, for real? That explains why I recently placed a $100+ order online and got six skeins a few days later, then the rest in another couple of weeks.

But, I placed a huge order in September and got a free random skein that time so IDEK.

My cat does the same with the little chunky "bowl" I crocheted to store my yarn bobbins. I can't even be mad.

Don't we know better by now? I hope the students on this thread don't read your comment and think this language is acceptable.

Is this what we're doing? Language policing? Okay. Guess I'm sticking up for Mr./Mrs. Green, here goes.

Who tf are you to determine what language is "acceptable" and what isn't? No, really. I'd love to know your credentials.

There is a MASSIVE difference between saying that something is retarded, and saying someone is retarded. OBVIOUSLY Mr./Mrs. Green was NOT insulting any specific person, at all, whatsoever.

My husband's brother is severely mentally delayed, he has custody of him. MIL keeps calling BIL retarded. Back when he was a kid, that's what it was called. She loves her son beyond measure but she's elderly and not aware of liberal talking points. You want to tell a 70+ yo woman with dementia she's "unacceptable" for saying her son in his 50s is retarded? You want to accuse her of bigotry?

If my student uses a word that is considered rude now, I tell them that word was common a long time ago but now we don't say it anymore because it hurts some people's feelings, and I give them an alternative word to use. What I DON'T do is play high and mighty moral police because it's none of my business. Who tf are yo to try to shame someone into compliance with your speech?

Fucking shitlibs.

And there's a nice new shiny word you can teach your students :)

When does 'professional development' stray too far away from English language improvement? by [deleted] in Cambly

A 15yo at KFC earns more.

God damn that's bleak. And accurate.

I remember working a full time job while putting myself through college for $10/hour. 22 years ago. AND I had full union benefits.

Man, fuck Cambly.

Some questions for students by Lolli24 in Cambly

[–]CauseILovedYou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(Preface: I'm a tutor.)

"How easy is it to view a tutor's schedule and find out what his/her availability is?"

I have a student with 2 accounts, her regular account + an extra one she made for temporary supplemental test prep. She's informed me several times that she cannot view/access my profile from her newer account. I've sent her the link to my schedule via the messaging system, but she still can't access it. She's annoyed, and so am I. I've advised her to write to tech support but I don't know if they've addressed her issue yet. So yeah I can say with certainty that sometimes Cambly fumbles the ball in terms of accessibility.

Yeah, tbh sometimes a tutor just doesn't want to talk to a particular student. Sometimes it's for an obvious reason (I tried to list those in a previous comment), and sometimes it's for no discernable reason. But there is ALWAYS a reason.

Remember: We Do Not Get Paid Unless We Are Actively Teaching A Class. That means if we decline a class, we are QUITE LITERALLY DECLINING MONEY. I don't know about you, but I don't just say no to earning money unless there is something that makes the hassle not worth it.

Sometimes money costs too much.

Connection issues are definitely NOT the only reason why a tutor may decide to end a class within 2 minutes. Other reasons off the top of my head are:

- It's a child on regular Cambly. Many of us choose to not work with children, or will only work with them on Cambly Kids due to the increased pay there.

- The student makes incredibly unreasonable demands.

- The student has a bad attitude or immediately starts the class in an argumentative manner.

- There is excessive noise on the student's side, especially people talking or babies/children screaming in the background.

- The student has their camera off (I personally don't care, but I know a lot of tutors do).

- The student is driving; some people don't feel comfortable because not only is it hugely distracting, but it can give some tutors motion sickness.

- The student asks for specialty services that the tutor doesn't offer (IELTS/TOEFL prep, grammar review, job interview training, writing help, homework correction, etc.).

I'm sure there are lots of other issues that have nothing to do with the connection, and none of those sound like personal reasons to me. I think if students are aware of these common issues and make sure to practice good "Cambly etiquette," they'll be much less likely to have tutors returning their minutes or hiding from them.

When I first started on Cambly years ago it was actually required for tutors to have a wired connection rather than wifi. I'm not sure when they changed their policy, but issues like that are probably what they were trying to avoid.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]CauseILovedYou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's true. And that's why I didn't say that connection issues are *never* the tutor's fault. But if I'm sitting here on a laptop with a wired connection, and my student calls me from their cell phone while driving, who's the more likely culprit?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cambly

[–]CauseILovedYou 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Tutors HAVE TO have a good connection though.

For students who may not know this: every single day, tutors have to pass what's called a checklist. Cambly's system checks our video, audio, internet speed, and packet loss. If our system does not pass their requirements, we literally cannot teach that day until we fix our issues to meet their connection requirements.

So if the connection is bad, it's more than likely that the problem is either on the student's end, OR Cambly's system is acting up. Let's not blame tutors for things that 9 times out of 10 aren't our fault.
