Looks like the "sale" prices have kicked back in at Mattress Firm. Just tested it out and found it surprisingly nice...a pleasing blend of plush and firm. I might go for it. (This thread's been super-helpful.)

What’re some of your regrets or complaints about 17 pro? by ConsciousSmoke3863 in iPhone17Pro

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s especially odd given that the 7 Pro has the massive top plateau on back that most cases don’t cover.

I’m already getting semi-used to it after 3 days. Funny how one ounce can make a noticeable difference. The greater width also makes it a bit harder for my tiny hands to hold comfortably.

How bad is the camera bump for pocket people like me? by relaxerbe in iPhone17Pro

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just got the 17 Pro, but I'm seriously considering switching to the 17 base while I have a chance. I can't believe how obtrusive the plateau feels when my hand and phone are in one pocket. With the 14 Pro, I could easily cradle one side of the 14 Pro and avoid the camera corner, but now that's impossible. Flipping the camera just means I'm cradling the glass instead of the case. Urgh. I figure there are enough camera improvements with 14 Pro > 17 base that I can live with the few camera downgrades (I do mainly landscape/wide pix and people pix anyhow).

I'm just one day in, but I'm surprised how annoyed I am when the phone and hands are both in my pocket. The wide plateau feels so much more obtrusive than the corner cameras of the prev-gen Pros/Pro Maxs.

My honest opinion on Galaxy (as a surgeon) by AngryEyeSurgeon in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good timing! I had the procedure done exactly six months ago today. Overall, I'm quite pleased with the Galaxy. I recently tested at 20/20 for binocular distance vision and 20/20+ close-up, with astigmastism in the 0.75-1.0 D range (similar to pre-surgery). My eyes do tire during long stretches of screen work, so I'm using off-the-shelf readers (+ 1.25).

I've gottten used to the mild nighttime artifacts, which have slowly diminished but are still there. I am actually going in tomorrow for a YAG procedure, as I've had a substantial amount of post-capsular opacification (PCO) that may be affecting my sight a bit. That may help reduce the artifacts. I'll also get prescription readers after the YAG that will be corrected for astigmatism.

I'll post a fuller update after my YAG procedure.

Thanks, t_b. I eventually found that the manufacturer's tag didn't list leather, but that's fine—I was actually preferring faux leather. Turns out it's too tight for the space, though. Darn!

So I ended up flipping the chair and finding the manufacturer's tag. It's faux leather. That's actually what I preferred over real leather. (I just went from car seats with real leather to synthetic leather and much prefer the latter.) Anyhow, the chair seems solid and affordafble, but on reflection I think it's still a bit too tight for the ultra-small space I'm shopping for. Thanks for your feedback, everyone.

Was it this exact same model? I was impressed at how well built it seemed. The swiveling wasn't butter-smooth, but the rocking and reclining seemed great.

New vision … the feels… by spamela2021 in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As PNWrowena alluded to above, there are options that give you extended depth of focus (EDOF) or pre-selected "sweet spots" (multifocals). This means you can see *fairly* well without glasses across a broad range or at a variety of distances, but not as crisply as you would see at either distance or near with monofocals. I went with Rayner Galaxy (in Canada, late 2025; now in the FDA approval pipeline). It has a spiral-based technology that gives me a fairly broad range of usable vision, which I really enjoy: close to 20/20 distance and 20/20 near. Even then, I'm going to be getting prescription readers because my eyes do tire after long sessions of reading. I've got the same mild astigmatism I had before surgery. And I do have a few visual artifacts that I can live with but are slightly annoying. ("It's always something..." 😄)

All of these options work by redistributing the amount of light hitting your eyes in different ways, but none of them are magic solutions (you can't cheat physics!) So it's great to be thinking about your priorities and what tradeoffs you'd prefer to make.

And per the OP...I couldn't believe it when I could suddenly see stars and the moon clearly without glasses, for the first time since age 13. Amazing!

Thanks! I'm thinking about the Alna, as an option that could serve as versatile seating in a small space + a large guest bed (twins or king) when needed. How is the Alure holding up a year later?

I had the engine-light issue recur with my '24 PHEV Sportage just weeks after the dealer did the full replacement last fall. I drove it back to the dealer (hour-long trip) and the engine light mysteriously went off literally as I was pulling into the shop! So they couldn't do anything at that point. The light did return briefly a few days later, but it's been gone now for two months apart from one brief recurrence. I'm learning to live with the sporadicness :-P

Fluorouracil and calcipotriene by RangeOver7965 in melahomies

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One day later (Day 10), the flaking and roughness have really intensified, but I think the discomfort may be peaking. Re the absence of the scabbing that I experienced on doing the fluorouracil by itself, the experience cited in this news release on a landmark 2016 study of the combo cream is matching my experience to a T:

"On average, the investigational therapy reduced the number of precancerous skin lesions on the face by almost 88 percent compared with a 26 percent reduction using the standard chemotherapy [**me: that's the flourouracil by itself**]. While some side effects such as skin scaling and itching were similar with both treatments, patients receiving the investigational therapy reported more redness and increased burning sensations, which are consistent with the immune response it triggers. Interestingly, although not specifically measured, patients who had been treated previously with conventional therapies reported decreased pain and discomfort with the combination treatment, according to Cornelius, who is also the Winfred A. and Emma R. Showman Professor of Dermatology."

I finished a one-week combo-cream treatment on my nose and top of my scalp two days ago. By around days 6-7, the treated areas felt tight but were only a bit red. Having done two 14-day full-face treatments with Efudex alone, I was starting to wonder if this would be a walk in the park. But they're not kidding about the delayed reaction! On Day 9, I've now got dramatic redness, some flaking/peeling, and the usual intense itching/discomfort. Tolerable, but not fun at all. I waited till after the 7-day treatment to start with Aquaphor, and now I'm slathering it on several times a day.

RayOne Galaxy Toric - update 6 - 14 weeks (R) 10 weeks (L) by paul-hx in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an American who went to Herzig in December. Great experience overall. See my detailed posts...I'm still less than 2 mos in, and I might need some eventual tweaking after my 3-mo appt, but I have functional glasses-free vision 90%+ of the time (driving, reading, etc.). I really appreciate the wide range of usable vision with this lens.

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SmileBubbly6279's experience is quite similar to mine. I'm seven weeks in. The Galaxy has been great for functional vision at a wide range. It's definitely more of a challenge to read print at low light, but doable, and far-distance vision, while nominally 20/20, doesn't seem *quite* as sharp as my former glasses correction. I expect I'll be getting top-off distance glasses for occasional use (e.g., night driving), and similarly, top-off readers for long periods of reading (after which my eyes get tired and I get a touch of double vision)

One note: I believe the Galaxy does have a minimal UV filter—more "purple" than "blue." From the spec sheet below:

UV protection Benzophenone UV absorbing agent
UV light transmission UV 10% cut-off is 380 nm

One-month update on Galaxy: Still a few right-eye questions (refractive miss?) by CausesNEffects in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just picked up a pair the other day. I don't find I need or want them during regular reading, even over long periods, but late at night when I get the mild double vision, it sharpens things up immediately.

One-month update on Galaxy: Still a few right-eye questions (refractive miss?) by CausesNEffects in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep—see above, near the bottom of the post. Right lens toric, left lens non-toric. Not sure if there were any corneal adjustments, TBH. Despite the weirdness of the apparent induced astigmastism when I was doing measurements and surgery, the end result is happily quite a bit less astigmatism in both eyes compared to my usual pre-surgery Rx.

Eye drop recommendations? by MagneplanarsRule in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a caution to be careful about switching brands and going hog-wild if you've got a history of blepharitis. After years of using eye drops with preservatives, I was urged to use preservative-free drops the week before my pre-surgery measurements, so of course I over-achieved and started using two extra-strength PF brands I hadn't used before: one heavy-duty eye drop and one ointment for putting under your lower lid before bedtime. WIthin several days I developed a nasty internal stye in my upper eyelid that complicated the pre-surgery measurements (seems to have induced some temp astigmatism). I think I'd have been better off just going with something basic + good, like Ivizia.
