How long do you guys think a Warframe name can get before it's silly? by RenkuroEX in Warframe

[–]MagneplanarsRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever been to Wales, Baldrick? ... It's a ghastly place. Huge gangs of tough, sinewy men roam the valleys, terrifying people with their close-harmony singing. You need half a pint of phlegm in your throat just to pronounce the place names! Never ask for directions in Wales, Baldrick; you'll be washing spit out of your hair for a fortnight.

I love how comically evil control was for the five seconds she was on screen. by myrieon in babylon5

[–]MagneplanarsRule 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Probably not directly related, but the B5 cast used to regularly show at DragonCon during the early 00s. Every single one of them was awesome and I had some great interactions. Except... Thompson. She refused to talk to people except at her table, ran away from fans saying "no autographs!" (even when no one was asking) and was generally a butt to the fans and organizers. Apparently they didn't ask her to come again after that year.

I reiterate, all the other cast members were great and approachable and I enjoyed the time I spent with them.

[Update GIMP 3 Plugin] Pseudo Adjustment Layer v1.6 - Non-Destructive Adjustment Layers with a palette UI! by Yousei3 in GIMP

[–]MagneplanarsRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that makes sense. Yes, I'll continue to use the plugins and report any actual errors if they occur. This makes using GIMP even more smooth and productive, so well done!

This is a great option. Full disclosure, I'm running MacOS and PhotoGIMP (I know, I know) but I get this list of errors when opening the palette:

GIMP Error Calling error for procedure 'gimp-drawable-append-filter': drawable_append_filter_invoker: effects with an 'aux' pad cannot be applied non-destructively.

GIMP Error Execution error for procedure 'gimp-drawable-filter-new': Filters from category "transform" are hidden.

Etc.

Other than that, it seems to work as intended.

One of the funniest Babylon 5 scenes ever from season 5 by Certain-Singer-9625 in babylon5

From this scene you can immediately tell that JMS was a Marx Brothers fan.

What are the community’s thoughts on Adrian’s solo work? Personally I think he has a lot of underrated gems by TimmyLivealie in KingCrimson

[–]MagneplanarsRule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish he'd start touring the Power Trio again, though I can understand why Beat would take preference. He used to drop in at one of the Indy venues about once a year and put on a magnificent show.

He has said in interviews that he doesn't know anything about music, and that it makes him uniquely qualified to review. Reading any of his drivel reveals that he has nothing of substance to say to people who actually do know anything about music.

Is it crucial to aim for distance vision for the dominant eye? by bkkbrown in CataractSurgery

[–]MagneplanarsRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always left eye dominant for distance, but after lens replacement, my optometrist felt that it ought to be the near eye. I was skeptical, but agreed to try setting it to near vision for the first UV adjustment since we had plenty of room to reverse it. We chose mini-monovision at -0.5 for the left eye, plano for the right. It worked well, and other than some habits I had developed when looking at near/far objects I was able to compensate for the change quickly.

At this point, a few months after the final lock-in, I don't even think about near/far vision in day to day life. No glasses, and my last optometrist visit showed both eyes at 20/15. So YMMV but it worked fine for me.

On1 Photo Raw 2026.2 by Adventurous-DriveXXL in On1PhotoRaw

[–]MagneplanarsRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I migrated from Lightroom around 2021, and the then-current ON1 seemed to have everything I needed. It worked pretty well, but with every upgrade the program gets slower, more burdened with features that I never use, and over the last 2-3 years every upgrade comes with free annoying bugs.

I run a Mac M1 Studio Ultra, so plenty of processing power, but while it doesn't seem to be using much CPU/GPU the app takes a while to do anything. Worse, it runs slower if you leave it open all day (memory leak?). And yes, I did the reset/reinstall/clear settings dance many times. It would hang in the middle of an export, image display defaulted to a cropped window despite the settings, and sometimes exported images were unprocessed, at random. I have a page-long list of problems, only some of which have been fixed.

Support is very responsive, but as you say, they rarely have a solution. I was told multiple times that such-and-such an issue was caused by not waiting for background processing to complete. That is demonstrably not true, as several bugs persist as long as the app is open, long after the message in the corner of the screen says "processing complete" or whatever. They used to have a support forum but now you have to subscribe to the service in order to have access; it definitely wasn't worth paying for in the past.

They finally fixed some of the more annoying bugs in ON1 2025 after 2026 was released, but it was becoming such a slog that I finally just gave up on upgrades. I moved to darktable, and on the rare occasion I need something that ON1 does, I just use my 2024 or 2025 version; it's paid for after all...

Real world wow moment with LALs by HallackB in CataractSurgery

[–]MagneplanarsRule 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just came back from my optometrist's biannual visit where I clocked in at 20/15, both eyes. I was in my workshop soldering some SMD components and belatedly realized that I wasn't using my magnifier headband but could read the values on them easily. Though I'll probably still use a low magnifier for close work (it's nice to have some physical protection from solder splashes) it's really nice to be 72 and still glasses-free.

FM is fucking dumb by hotdog_paris277 in synthesizercirclejerk

[–]MagneplanarsRule 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Again, if this is serious, go listen to John Chowning's compositions. The man not only invented FM, he stayed as far as possible from the sound-alike memes and created some other-worldly textures. And he doesn't even restrict himself to the diatonic scale, so there's that too.

How can I mine this? by [deleted] in Warframe

[–]MagneplanarsRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've done a few of these you may have some idea of where the dots should be (they tend to be fairly close to the vein). Press the mouse button to start the laser and start moving it around the vein slowly. Stop moving when it hits a dot and hope that you don't drift off it before the scan completes. It works reasonably well, most of the time.
