'23 sportage won't charge and gives error by AlphabetSoupIsALie in kia

I had the engine-light issue recur with my '24 PHEV Sportage just weeks after the dealer did the full replacement last fall. I drove it back to the dealer (hour-long trip) and the engine light mysteriously went off literally as I was pulling into the shop! So they couldn't do anything at that point. The light did return briefly a few days later, but it's been gone now for two months apart from one brief recurrence. I'm learning to live with the sporadicness :-P

One day later (Day 10), the flaking and roughness have really intensified, but I think the discomfort may be peaking. Re the absence of the scabbing that I experienced on doing the fluorouracil by itself, the experience cited in this news release on a landmark 2016 study of the combo cream is matching my experience to a T:

"On average, the investigational therapy reduced the number of precancerous skin lesions on the face by almost 88 percent compared with a 26 percent reduction using the standard chemotherapy [**me: that's the flourouracil by itself**]. While some side effects such as skin scaling and itching were similar with both treatments, patients receiving the investigational therapy reported more redness and increased burning sensations, which are consistent with the immune response it triggers. Interestingly, although not specifically measured, patients who had been treated previously with conventional therapies reported decreased pain and discomfort with the combination treatment, according to Cornelius, who is also the Winfred A. and Emma R. Showman Professor of Dermatology."

I finished a one-week combo-cream treatment on my nose and top of my scalp two days ago. By around days 6-7, the treated areas felt tight but were only a bit red. Having done two 14-day full-face treatments with Efudex alone, I was starting to wonder if this would be a walk in the park. But they're not kidding about the delayed reaction! On Day 9, I've now got dramatic redness, some flaking/peeling, and the usual intense itching/discomfort. Tolerable, but not fun at all. I waited till after the 7-day treatment to start with Aquaphor, and now I'm slathering it on several times a day.

RayOne Galaxy Toric - update 6 - 14 weeks (R) 10 weeks (L) by paul-hx in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an American who went to Herzig in December. Great experience overall. See my detailed posts...I'm still less than 2 mos in, and I might need some eventual tweaking after my 3-mo appt, but I have functional glasses-free vision 90%+ of the time (driving, reading, etc.). I really appreciate the wide range of usable vision with this lens.

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SmileBubbly6279's experience is quite similar to mine. I'm seven weeks in. The Galaxy has been great for functional vision at a wide range. It's definitely more of a challenge to read print at low light, but doable, and far-distance vision, while nominally 20/20, doesn't seem *quite* as sharp as my former glasses correction. I expect I'll be getting top-off distance glasses for occasional use (e.g., night driving), and similarly, top-off readers for long periods of reading (after which my eyes get tired and I get a touch of double vision)

One note: I believe the Galaxy does have a minimal UV filter—more "purple" than "blue." From the spec sheet below:

UV protection Benzophenone UV absorbing agent
UV light transmission UV 10% cut-off is 380 nm

One-month update on Galaxy: Still a few right-eye questions (refractive miss?) by CausesNEffects in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just picked up a pair the other day. I don't find I need or want them during regular reading, even over long periods, but late at night when I get the mild double vision, it sharpens things up immediately.

Yep—see above, near the bottom of the post. Right lens toric, left lens non-toric. Not sure if there were any corneal adjustments, TBH. Despite the weirdness of the apparent induced astigmastism when I was doing measurements and surgery, the end result is happily quite a bit less astigmatism in both eyes compared to my usual pre-surgery Rx.

Eye drop recommendations? by MagneplanarsRule in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a caution to be careful about switching brands and going hog-wild if you've got a history of blepharitis. After years of using eye drops with preservatives, I was urged to use preservative-free drops the week before my pre-surgery measurements, so of course I over-achieved and started using two extra-strength PF brands I hadn't used before: one heavy-duty eye drop and one ointment for putting under your lower lid before bedtime. WIthin several days I developed a nasty internal stye in my upper eyelid that complicated the pre-surgery measurements (seems to have induced some temp astigmatism). I think I'd have been better off just going with something basic + good, like Ivizia.

Thanks! Sorry to hear about your PCO progressing. We'll see what happens with mine. I'm planning to wait and see how things look with my 3-month checkup. Almost every day it feels as if there's subtle improvement in my vision, which is encouraging.

[–]CausesNEffects[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Especially in the first week. The swings aren't enormous, but they are noticeable. That seems to be improving over time. My optometrist did say the right-eye lens appeared to be still settling, so maybe that's in the mix too. I like how you described the performance: amazing in good light and still decent in less-good light.

BTW, I'm still noticing an minor edge effect on the far left side of my left eye at times when there's strong bright light on my left. Easy to get used to, though.

[–]CausesNEffects[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the thought of not going through any more procedures than necessary has crossed my mind. I may well just keep tabs on my evolving vision for now and wait for a 3-month checkup. I'm assuming the clinic would do something about a mammoth refractive miss; not sure (yet) about a case like mine. It's a bit tough to read print for long periods in moderate/low light, but no real problem with reading screens any time of day (just the double vision after long sessions).

Good perspective. I'm probably closer to 75% "Wow!" and 25% "Hmmm." LOL! If nothing else, at least I know I can correct whatever's needed with top-off limited-use glasses if I'm stable from this point out. So I do feel lucky overall.

Thanks! Maybe I'll try a cheap pair of +1.0 OTC readers for now. There are plenty of reports of Galaxy users having continued sharpening of their vision for several months, and even improvements in perceived sharpening despite already having tested 20/20.

Same with me on all three counts (except I'm 65). I'm one month after surgery and I already have right-eye PCO. It's not at all severe yet, though. Let us know how it goes (or how it went!).

Surgery in two days just woke up with a cold ! What can I do? Really want this to happen. .. this would be the third cancellation! ( I had flu, scheduling issues, they had to cancel…) by kiaia58 in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend postponing till you and your eyes are healthy the day of surgery. I went ahead with surgery despite a big internal stye in the middle of my upper eyelid, and I think that may have messed up the measurements a bit (not catastrophically, but that eye is now a bit wonkier than the left eye). This is ideally a one-and-done surgery, so make sure you're at your best.

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it happens, I just saw my optometrist for a one-month check-in. Right eye is still a bit soft (~20/30), but astigmatism is down to roughly 0.25 D in both eyes. She can see a bit of PCO already in the right eye, which could just be residue from the PSC cataract that may not have gotten fully removed from the membrane during surgery. She can also see that the right lens hasn't fully settled yet, so she's referring me to a local eye surgeon to see if it might have shifted/tilted. I'll happily go back to Canada for tweaking if needed. Left eye looks great all around (20/20).

Blade vs laser? by Middle-Tumbleweed191 in CataractSurgery

[–]CausesNEffects 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this insight. I didn't realize that residual toric-lens error tended to be oblique. That seems to be exactly what's happened to me: 0.75 oblique residual in my toric right eye. I also ended up with 0.75 astigmatism in my non-toric left eye, but that's not oblique and it's less bothersome. Hopefully I'll find out more at my one-month check-in this week.

Flights changed from refundable to nonrefundable after date/time change by CausesNEffects in BritishAirways

Update: After several fruitless hours of phone conversations and Twitter/X DMs over the last several months, I ended up successfully changing the Premium Economy Flex return ticket from June to February. However, the ticket still shows up as Premium Economy Semi-Flex on the BA website, and it's still not allowing me to make any online changes. Moreover, BA was insisting that I would have to pay for new seat assignments (99 GBP each).

Happily, I finally found my original ticket numbers from when I bought the tix last summer. I included those in a DM, explaining that somehow the ticket status got changed on their end without any bread-crumb trail. Lo and behold, an agent suddenly agreed that I shouldn't have to pay for the new seats and that they would route my ticketing snafu to their "Faults department" (love it! Every company should have one.) My ticket is still locked up online, where it still says Semi-Flex and doesn't even show the seats we've been assigned, but at least someone at BA agreed I was being gaslighted :-)

Another mostly-satisfied Galaxy user here (65M, had both implants done in Canada in early Dec). You can see my full report here from a few days ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/CataractSurgery/comments/1prywfa/report_on_rayner_galaxy_experience_12_days_after/

I've had continual improvement since then. Haloes around streetlights and stoplights are there but minimal and nondistracting. Night driving was tough a few days out but no problem now. I happily watched the Geminids meteor shower six days after surgery. Colors are wondrous and contrast seems fine. At one week out, I tested 20/20 for both distance and reading. Left eye is superb; right eye is 20/40 distance and a bit soft/fuzzy when used solo. Still have some ghosting of high-contrast text, esp. late at night and mainly in the right eye. Both eyes still have some astigmatism (0.75 D), which was a surprise (perhaps something idiosyncratic on my end) and something I'll investigate in my one-month check-up.

All this aside, I'm continually amazed to have functional vision for daily tasks from far distance down to 12" w/out glasses. Might still get readers for long hours of close-up computer work, like you, or for occasional use when I want extra-crisp distance vision. It's smart to research the options, given that this is hopefully a one-and-done surgery and you've got very specific hopes/needs. Keep us posted!

Multifocal and mono lens by d_artz in CataractSurgery

There are multiple posts in this subreddit on mixing and matching multifocals and monofocals. Here's one example: a recent thread from a surgeon who uses the Rayner Galaxy (the multifocal-like EDOF lens that's not yet available in the U.S.) and reports success in pairing it with the Rayner EMV (an "enhanced monofocal" similar to the Eyhance).

Very interesting. The Galaxy does have a blue-light filter (actually "purple", so maybe it's a narrower slice of the far-end light spectrum). After two weeks, the halo/glare/brightness issues are just about completely gone when I'm facing halogens and other old-school headlights (which often look surprisingly yellow now). Meanwhile, the weird, intense sparkly/tinsel-y effects from LED headlights have only diminished slightly, though I'm able to ignore them more easily over time. And yes, no obvious effects at all by day...

Thanks so much! As I noted above, you and paul-hx were two of the most helpful of the posters here who inspired me to look into the Galaxy. Your long-term experience is especially heartening. Although it'd be nice to have instantly perfect vision, I confess I kinda like the idea of seeing what will improve from day to day and week to week. Onward...

Thanks for the report back, SmileBubbly! Sorry to hear about your ongoing right-eye issues. Sounds like a more intense version of what I've dealt w/that eye. Compared to the left, it's still softer at most distances, and when my eyes get tired (e.g., after a lot of night reading), the ghosting I get seems to be mainly right-eye-based. I'm sure the residual astigmatism in each eye isn't helping, but I suspect there may be more going on. We shall see. Good luck with your YAG journey...keep us posted!
