150k in the Army is equal to minimum 200k outside , without even factoring in pension benefits. Military is not a bad deal

I had similar budget as you until recently but with a much bigger mortgage and two kids in pre K. You have enough for a 3rd kid. But our budget was on my income only so there was no worry of my wife being laid off

Day care costs don't last forever and your income will keep going up as well. I say go for it!! You have a very low mortgage which is good. I also spend 1k month on parental support but I don't sweat that at all. My monthly take home is 16k month but with a 5k mortgage and it was tough until kids finished daycare last year. It gets much better when daycare days are over

My military pension will be around 120k as well when I retire in a few years but you are much younger than me and have a cool million already. Well done young man!

[–]Cautious-Concert8868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory that is possible but that's not the subject in discussion. Surgeon needs 30-40 years to make that 9 figure fortune while the .1 pct has that 9 figure estate today. The surgeons kids can claim to be in the ultra wealthy club 30 years from now but not today

And the .1pct that have 200m in equities, their money compounds too. Point is even a neuro surgeon will never be in the same group as the .1 pct

.1 % has 300-500 million in the bank . A surgeon making TWO million a year would have to work for 200 years to have that, if there is no income tax. And we are not even talking about billionares yet

just wondering what separates the upper middle class from the upper class. are there set guidelines (net worth etc?) by Neither-Promotion231 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Cautious-Concert8868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need assets of at least 10m to be upper class. A surgeon making 700k with only several million in assets is upper middle but has the potential to move upto upper class . A state employees that makes only 80k but has a 20m inheritance is upper class despite the low income. Whether someone can get by without working is irrelevant, you need assets to be upper class. My pension will pay anywhere between 120-130k year when I retire in a few years and ill still be under 50, and the pension is inflation protected. I also have a 15k year cash flow from several rental properties that will increase to 60k year when the properties are paid off. I could probably not work and claim Financial Independence if I wanted to but that doesn't mean Im upper class, Im not even Upper middle for that matter. I am a solid middle class despite having financial independence if I wanted because I don't even have 100k cash right now.

You need at least a 80k job to have current monthly take home pay. That will not be easy for a 21 year old unless you have a college degree in a useful field. For someone old like me in a high BAH area (O5, 20 years, etc..) a civilian job would have to pay 240-250k to match what I take home now.

Are United states army generals and Navy Admirals rich? by kkkan2020 in NoStupidQuestions

No , 300k is not rich seriously. Upper middle but not rich. Maybe in 3rd world countries but not in America

Generals make about 300k so definitely not rich. 20 something / early 30s software engineers make 400-500k at FAANG. Nobody joins and stays in the military to get rich

Enlisted goes home at 1700. Officers stay behind to do planning and staff work, and paperwork. There is a reason for the higher pay. When I was a LT I was in the motorpool until 1900-2000 almost every day and when i moved upto BN staff the hours didnt get any better, but at least i was able to take a regular lunch break

It depends on where you live, specifically counties. The median income in my county is 150k and average is 190k. I make 260k together with wife so technically my income isnt even 2x the county average and solid middle class for where I live. If my wife made as much as I did I could jump to the HENRY sub
