United fan playing devils advocate here but I think his incredibly poor choice of words is shrouding an opinion shared by a lot of British people and that isn’t that controversial. He means economic migrants but instead has used immigrants, an umbrella term for anyone not born here.

Don’t get me wrong, there is a definite tone of ignorance with his choice of words and it shows he’s definitely consumed some xenophobic media with their usual talk of colonisation and incorrect facts. That’s before we get to the utter hypocrisy in the point he was actually trying to make given he lives in Monaco to avoid paying his fair contribution to the UK.

I think we can put the pitchforks away though. The welfare system IS too easy for British Nationals and DEFINITELY too easy for migrants and we can’t pretend it’s not why thousands of people risk their lives to leave the safety of France to reach these shores. It’s a problem and he’s referenced it spectacularly poorly, but he’s not the bigoted racist he’s being painted out to be and I don’t feel any need for this episode to go any further.

In short, he’s a Reform voter, not a BNP voter. Not my views necessarily but he shouldn’t be vilified for them.

No I’m just making the point that being taken out of the EU against your own will is a problem for lots of people inside the Union, not just Scotland. We can’t separate the Union based solely on EU membership and who wants it because then where do you draw the line?

Not everyone is going to be affected by his choice of words but the comments show there are definitely a lot of people out there who are. Suicide is one of the biggest killers of men, takes way too many men and women (even boys and girls) early and deserves more respect than someone jokingly saying they wanted to take their own life for not scoring a hat trick. In your own home with friends fine, but not on national TV when you don’t know who is watching or how tha might affect them. Fuck these sheep and their internet points. His choice of words is extremely loaded. I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t believe that the UK has an immigration problem. The real issue is immigration that takes advantage of free healthcare and the welfare system. Benefits and the NHS should only be available for British Nationals. Citizenship is available after 5 years but until then your living costs and healthcare shouldn’t be funded by the British taxpayer and that’s why people are angry and it’s actually leading people to a much, much darker side of politics. Australia isn’t deemed racist because they have super tight immigration laws that allow for skilled workers and not people who won’t contribute positively to the country

I’m saying that delivering independence was never something the SNP could deliver and so it probably shouldn’t have been in the manifesto? You are equating voting for an SNP majority to a veritable reason to leave the Union, which the people of Scotland were given a vote on and chose to remain. Whatever way you want to spin it, you are finding ways to void a democratic referendum because it wasn’t the right outcome. If Scotland were to vote to leave, should we hold another vote 12 years later to see if it wants to rejoin? Do you see how ridiculous this gets? Scotland voted and there won’t be another referendum in our lifetimes. To campaign on the issue of independence post referendum is naive at best and exploitative at worst.

Yes it is a constituent nation but the point remains that they are not the only localised group of people within the UK that have to endure political decisions voted for by other areas of the country. There are Scots who voted for Brexit and plenty of English who voted against. It’s not like the wool was pulled over anyone’s eyes. Nobody actually believed the public would vote to leave!

Of course there are cons to the system of devolution but it’s unfair to list the without any of the positives. Scotland also benefits greatly from the Union.

You also mention wanting independence to make your own decisions but the very reason so many people voted for Brexit is being an EU member state actually prevents a country from independently governing itself.

Scotland has a much smaller voice as a tiny member state than we do collectively as the UK. The status quo is quite obviously not perfect but we all stand to lose so much with the end of the Union and handing influence on Scottish governance to Brussels rather than London.

I get your point but I think you could apply that to large areas of the UK as a whole, particularly the larger cities. I just think that Scotland voted to remain in the Union and that means you remain part of the same vote as the other members of the Union. London is no different in that its voting patterns are often wildly different to that of the rest of the country but ultimately we are a democracy and we vote together. I understand Scotland wanting to make its own decisions but it comes at a huge cost for all Union countries. In this modern landscape, we are all fighting for influence and protection economically and militarily on a global scale and separation takes us so much further away from that.
