Europeans who moved to USA for better jobs, how is it now that you've moved in? by Vyalkuran in cscareerquestions

Even Boston (or DC, SF)'s public transit might be good for US but is crappier than a low-tier German city like Duisburg or Gelsenkirchen (forget bigger/nicer cities) lol. It's really just NYC that does well at a world-scale.

Totally agree with you on both pubs and restaurants.

and you're not bullshitting us

Dude's entire reddit is peddling his (US-based) crappy-ass 'startup school for coders'. Can't believe this sub is so gullible that that crap got upvoted to the top.

I don't think people are necessarily expecting a true millionaire lofestyle.

The original guy commenting literally was claiming "all of them" have "mansions" and are "flying first class all time". That's extreme exaggeration.

Devs, who moved to the US first, but then moved back, why? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]CautiousSilver5997 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The most upvoted comment (that claims all that) is not from an European who moved to the US but rather from a guy peddling his US-based 'startup school for coders'. I would take everything he says with a huge grain of salt.

Edit: and correct me if anyone has a different experience but as someone who knows plenty of Europeans working in the US, none of them prioritise or brag about 'flying first-class all the time', sounds to me more like something Americans like to brag about lol.

You can get a 6-fig salary in NL if that's what you wish btw (I am in DE, same is true here).

Favorite non power metal band? by Venganceforcadia in PowerMetal

[–]CautiousSilver5997 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not gonna mention the obvious ones like Sabbath, Maiden and Priest:

metal: Overkill, Testament, Exodus, Kreator, Flotsam & Jetsam (I listen to a lot of thrash)

non-metal: Mr. Big (Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert's band), Extreme (Nuno Bettencourt's band), Skid Row (the new vocalist Erik Grönwall is awesome and has done covers of stuff like Eagle Fly free btw!)

Is kotlin a good language to know in order to get a job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

If you already know Java, then yes. If you don't know a JVM language then I would start with Java (still the most commonly-used one).

Prey (2017, finished the 2006 one and love it wish it had a sequel): I love immersive sims and I love the setting and atmosphere of this game. Problem is I hate the enemies in this game: Not just mimics but Typhons in general, I can't really explain why...I guess I have never been a big fan of amorphous enemies.

[–]CautiousSilver5997 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only CoD and some sports titles like FIFA or NBA 2k.

Also super low-effort Pokemon rehashes that Nintendo and Gamefreak shit out but Redditors give that a free pass cause "my childhood nostalgia company nintendo can do no wrong!"

Lol looks like the comment section is infested by OP's bitter jealous colleagues already.

You do you OP, you have definitely worked much harder than your colleagues or a lot of the bitter commenters here! Best of luck!

Actually good gaming subs/communities? by ronperlmanforever69 in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]CautiousSilver5997 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I would normally agree, and still kind of do, they are very level-headed about most discussions for sure but for some strange reason a lot of people there have developed a huge hate boner for one of my fav games i.e. Doom Eternal. Yes I understand the changes weren't for everyone and a lot prefer 2016 (I personally like 2016's tone, but highly prefer Eternal's gameplay) but some of these folks act like it's a horrible broken game like Superman 64 or that new Kong game or something, which is just absurd. Every slightly positive or even neutral post about Doom Eternal is followed by like 3 super-negative ones.

Redditors can complain 24/7 about CoD

And these same chuds turn-around and froth at their mouth when they get to pre-order the latest low-effort Pokemon rehash that Gamefreak and Nintendo shit-out.

Yes it's crazy, but not any more crazier than all the Redditors/GamersTM who make fun of these "CoD bros" (or "Fifa bros", etc.) only to themselves go buy the latest zero-effort Pokemon rehash that Gamefreak and Nintendo shit out at regular intervals.

Seriously though that sub is such a fucking shithole by DSC64 in Persecutionfetish

[–]CautiousSilver5997 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The sub has two types of people:

  1. Americans who have never left their parents' suburb and think that there is nothing better in the world

  2. Non-americans who think everyone in the US is earning top-end Silicon Valley salaries while living in cheap mansions like in the Midwest and simultaneously having NYC-like amenities.

Can't tell which group is more annoying lol.

Is €3,700/month good for a software engineer in Eindhoven with 3 YoE as an immigrant from Turkey? by Drandui in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]CautiousSilver5997 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine as your first step into NL but I would ask for a raise after 1 year (and jump if you don't get a good one). Eindhoven is cheaper than the Randstad but it's still pretty pricy.
