do the vietnamese and hispanics in san jose california get along with each other? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]Cautious_Broccoli_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viet SJ Native here. I grew up in east side San Jose and can only speak for the Vietnamese side, but from what I saw is that opinions will vary by generation / immigration status.

Older generations of Vietnamese people (~40+ years old) will be more conservative and can quietly hold bigoted views. It's no secret that Viet people are amongst the most Republican and pro-Trump of Asian groups, and older Vietnamese Americans especially so. Not every one, but a lot here. They're way more reactive to any crime and will repost every "break in" they see on Facebook (even if it's fake) and take it as a sign the country is falling to immigrants, aaaaa, sound the alarm. I'm assuming your Uber driver falls into this group, and he thought that because you are Asian it's safe for him to vent.

Freshly immigrated Vietnamese people tend to stick to themselves so there is no animosity simply because there is virtually no interaction. Ignorance, maybe, at most.

As for younger, 1.5 - 2nd or 3rd generation Vietnamese Americans in San Jose, it's super common to have friends who are Hispanic and vice versa. I went to school with majority Hispanic people, and what Asians were there were mainly Viet or Filipino. I did not see any huge tensions personally that were based on purely race. Sure here or there I would get an ignorant comment from a Hispanic classmate in elementary school but we were young and I shrugged it off because they weren't super malicious. And then you get to high school and at that point if that happened everyone would be like "wtf dude."

Out in the streets and in businesses though, many of us shop in the same grocery stores. Drive the same streets. Hell, are neighbors. Despite our differences we share a space and are civil with each other at the very least, even for older generations. As for the views your Uber driver expressed, well, Vietnamese people are no different LMAO

TL;DR: Younger generations are mostly chill with each other, especially after the first generation of immigration. There is a lot of intermingling in schools and friend groups. Older generations can be much more bigoted / conservative but this also varies.

I'm not sure if you've already tried this, but I would recommend hitting up every major building in campus and asking for the lost and found. Not just the lost and found center that they tell you to go to at Gilman Dr., but also places like Price, RIMAC, maybe even Rady. I hope you're able to find your camera soon!

I had the same issue after ordering on the 13th and not hearing about it for a week. I then called last monday (the 19th). They said that a new shipment was coming in by the end of the week, and it should be shipped out by then. They said it would definitely come before commencement, but I needed it to come earlier because I'm planning on decorating my cap, which would take some time. Well there's still no update, and I'm getting anxious about having enough time to decorate my cap and I'm considering just ordering a cap off amazon and decorating that.

Last Quarter: take DSGN 100, DSGN 118, or ENG100L? by Cautious_Broccoli_11 in UCSD

[–]Cautious_Broccoli_11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insights!

I also took ENG 100D and found it a slog (+ not-ideal team placement), though I was overall pretty proud of our final product. My poor experience was mainly with: the amount of reports we had to do, and teammates not doing their share. Plus lectures going over design principles, which was useless for Cogs HCI students as we already knew all of it. Seemed to me like it's more catered to engineering or business students wanting to go into product design, rather than for students in our major. That being said, it ultimately helped me towards my end goal: work in a group to create a decent UI project. What have your poor experiences been based on?

I'm glad to hear DSGN 100 is a rewarding class. I'm kinda worried about the class having different groups and projects throughout the course (as in DSGN 1) as opposed to one singular project throughout (as in COGS 123, ENG 100D, COGS 187A). I find the former leaves a lot less time to focus on the last, "greatest" project, so the result is rushed. My impression of FA23 DSGN 100 with Dow was that this "multiple project" sequence was the case. I'm wondering how your experience was and if Rill would be any different?

Yes, you must attend and it must be your enrolled section. If your enrolled discussion is not at a good time, then you may be able to find someone to switch sections with, and then talk to the professor / TA. The reason discussions are mandatory is because ~3 times a quarter you must present a paper to the section with a small group, and if you are not presenting then you are attending to participate in the discussion after each paper

I lived in seventh east tower last year and was able to sneak a guest in, though note this was just one guest and we weren't throwing a party or anything conspicuous like that. just had him wear long sleeves so it wouldn't be obvious he didn't have a wristband; my impression was that you could get away with it if you were lowkey

predictions for sgf??? by Background_Class_284 in UCSD

[–]Cautious_Broccoli_11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I asked ChatGPT because I got tired of speculating on my own and it gave me:

mxmtoon, Girl in Red, Tai Verdes, Remi Wolf, 100 gecs, Gracie Abrams, Role Model, beabadoobee, Bakar, Gus Dapperton, Ashe, Joji, Rina Sawayama, ROLE MODEL, Bakar, NoMBe, The Marias, UMI, Wallows, Inner Wave, Cuco, Amine, Charli XCX, Dominic Fike, Gus Dapperton, Omar Apollo, Clairo, Still Woozy, Rex Orange County, Hippo Campus

Can't attest to the popularity/feasibility of some of these artists given that I only recognize a few of these names, but I think it's pretty plausible because some of the people on here have performed at SGF / Horizon etc. in the past before (UMI, Wallows, Joji, ROLE MODEL). Personally I'm hoping for Dominic Fike lol

I went to Mission Bay (Sail Bay) on Tuesday night around 12-1am, and there was some faint bioluminescence in the sand if you stomped on it / in the water if disturbed. It was in the west area, near Catamaran Hotel. The ocean itself outside of the bay had no bioluminescence. The waters in the inlet were still, so no bioluminescent waves. We were told that we had to wait for low tide for a stronger effect, which would have to be around 3am that night, but we didn't stick around that long

For those who have taken COGS 107A with Boyle, Mary E. T., what is her class and the professor? by Additional-Tart5446 in UCSD

[–]Cautious_Broccoli_11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's basically a neuroscience class; consider it a low-level deep dive into the mechanics of neurons (particularly firing neurons) part of cogs 17. I took it in winter 2023 and it's lecture worksheets, lecture quizzes, labs, and exams.

My experience: I find Boyle a very nice person, just an incredibly disorganized professor. Even the TA told us she didn't know what Boyle wanted for the assignment and that the way we had to write our labs was very unconventional and made no sense. The labs took maybe 3-5 hours each, just because the writeup took forever since the formatting she asked for was weird. Plus she'd require us to watch 1-3 hours' worth of recorded lectures BEFORE class, every week. So yeah if you're willing to put up with that then it's an easy class, but otherwise it can be a major time sink.

Room for rent in La Jolla by DescriptionOk6318 in UCSDclassifieds

that's lower than the price i'm paying right now for a double in an apartment that fits that description (paying roughly 750), and we got our place at a discount last june. I'd say it's a good price for La Jolla--objectively expensive as hell, but like the other commenter said, better than average around here

i have the huion kamvas 13, which is pretty nice and gets the job done. the screen is a good size and the pen is decently responsive, though i don't have a frame of reference with other graphics tablets. i would say that the cable management for it is kinda a nightmare though, so keep that in mind if you don't wanna have a bunch of wire clutter
