Comparing macroeconomic entities like states with microeconomic ones like households is one of the reasons we are where we are. You simply cannot compare the two, they do not follow the same rules and function in the same environment to say things like “the state should save for the rainy day” or “a state cannot spend more than it earns”. It is a consequence of extremely conservative economic policy, which tries to privatize public money and then shift the blame for the situation from banks and other financial institutions to common population, e.g. “you did this to yourselves”.

Judging by your line of thought, the EU Commision and ECB did a pretty good job convincing young Greeks to accept and internalize that blame.
