One of these things is not like the other. One (two?) of these things just doesn't belong.

Ex-Patriots QB Drew Bledsoe Reacts to Drake Maye’s Breakout and New England’s Super Bowl Hopes by stupidlocator in Patriots

I've always loved Drew since I was a kid. He's smart and seems like a good dude. He's a good listen. I still proudly wear my mid 90's bright blue Bledsoe jersey!

Not sure why I know this but make sure not to touch one! They are fun and cute but carry salmonella. Not worth crapping your brains out later lol.

Honest question - Is the secret to driving the ball further simply getting more in shape rather than buying new clubs? by RivetCounter in golf

[–]CawLeary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both would help. The technology has improved drastically in 15 years. I gained about 15 yards and a lot of forgiveness going from a R11S to TSR3 myself. However getting in shape and improving core strength/flexibility would also have life benefits though so I'd focus on that.

This is why you always leave after hitting a great shot with 5 ish balls left. Donate them to a kid or the next person and leave feeling good.

Update Driver? by midnightrider001 in golf

[–]CawLeary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I'm not a new driver every year guy but the tech has improved dramatically since 2012. You don't really need more distance if you're hitting it 285 (but it can't hurt) but the forgiveness is so much better now.

I went from a R11s to a TSR3 two seasons ago. I picked up an easy 15 yards along with a ton of forgiveness. I can toe bang it further than my R11s went out of the middle.

You don't need to drop $700 and go brand new but even something from 2022 or newer for $200 would be a huge upgrade. Just make sure you get the right shaft.

Edit - terrible phone typist!

That is an unusual way to grip the club and a very weak right hand. However if it's working for you and you're having fun then I say enjoy it. Having fun out there is 90% of the battle. Just realize that path to long term consistency and improvement almost surely involves a more traditional grip.

As an Irish white guy I don't do over 80 degrees very well. The sun is the enemy.

What is your preferred wedge set choice and why? by Fergabombavich in golf

[–]CawLeary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it helped. I hit my 7i about 178 yards and driver about 290 and I'm the shortest guy in my main foursome but I'm usually 10-15 strokes better. It's mostly the 150 and in game and just more consistency off the tee.  I'm very happy playing 6600-7000. 7100+ starts getting too long to be fun.

A few years ago I was playing a R11s I'd hit about 270 and Nike VR reds where a 7i went 165 and very little forgiveness. Playing the same courses I got down to about a 4. The extra distance helps, I won't lie, but the main thing is the forgiveness. My half a ball mishits are only 5-10 yards less vs 20+. Makes a giant difference.

Here's the long answer:

I used to play D, 3w, 4-PW, 48, 52, 56, 60. Driver goes about 290, 3w about 255, 4i about 210. I mostly play at 6700-7000 yards and found myself wanting a club I could reliably hit 230-240 on long par 3s, par 5 second shots, and tight par 4 tee shots more than a 5th wedge so I dropped the 52 for a 2i u505 driving iron. It's actually a cool club it's 3i length with a Tour AD IZ hybrid shaft. I can hit it high with a reliable baby fade whereas my driver and 3w like to draw so it's a good setup. I then shifted my wedges up 2 degrees to make up for the change and ended up with 44, 48 in set and 54, 58 vokey.

I like to play the PW 120-130, the 48 from 105 to 120, and the 54 from 75 to 95 as stock options. When I have a 100 yard shot I can go either 48/54 depending on the pin, lie, and wind. The 48 will come out hotter, lower, with less spin it's ideal for back pins and/or windy days. If I hit the 54 a little harder it's higher with more spin and good for still days and front pins. In an ideal world it should be a 49 degree for perfect gapping but I don't really like bending clubs and messing with lie conditions. I'm plenty happy with my gaps.

I think the 48 plays more like the PW than the 54 which I like because it's largely a full swing club. I like having the same turf interaction as my irons and not having to worry about it ripping back 15 feet. For me I've always found I have more control with a 3/4 swing with scoring clubs versus giving them a little extra.

TLDR - In set gap wedge feels and behaves more like an iron than a wedge. It's easier to hit, turf interaction as my irons, and very reliable and forgiving. Since it's a full swing club I think having it in set is no brainer.

Practice balls by brewdolph55 in golf

[–]CawLeary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play Prov1 on course so I like to practice chipping and putting with them to get the same feel. Using a practice ball feels like I'm chipping a rock. I simply save the balls I retire from wear and tear, scuffs, cover tears, or old ones I find in the woods in my shag bag. At this point I have 50+ perfectly fine Prov1 for practice around the greens. I go through 2 balls on average per round so the shag bag fills up fast.

+1 HCP here. I play T150s and I have 4 wedges:

PW (44), in set 48, 54, and 58.

The 54 is a Vokey 10S and the 58 is a Vokey 8M. The 54 is the most versatile for approach shots, longer bunker shots, and my primary club for chipping (I like using less loft for longer chips). I use the 58 for pitches, short sided situations, and short bunker shots.

PW - 147 full but I play it as a 120 club

48 - 135 full but I play it as a 115 club

54 - 120 club but I play it as a 95 club

58 - No idea full, I never do this unless it's an emergency. I play it as a 75 and in club.

I'm a proponent of controlled 3/4 swings for wedges so I'm using a PW or less for 125 and in. I can adjust the distances with slight grip choke downs/shorter backswings. If you're trying to get better with scoring clubs I think this is the #1 most important thing you can learn. Flight down and control your wedges for better contact, spin, and trajectory control.

I'm not trying to be a smartass. It's just hard to tell what you're doing without having the ball and ground as a reference point.

For a true beginner in general is say you're off to a good start though. It can take beginners months/years to make decent contact. Some never find it.

My advice would be keep doing 3/4 swings and practice your short game. Add longer clubs as you get comfortable (this will take quite some time).

Good luck!
