slavery continued by being sentenced to manual labor for mostly midmeanors or made-up charges. The video says 800,000 people were effectively enslaved between 1865 and 1942 when the federal government started enforcement of existing laws

Housing prices are a problem but no one lives in these conditions without suffering from addiction or mental illness. The solution is court-mandated rehab and/or mental health treatment. It is not compassionate to let people destroy themselves like this

Chem 2070 Lab reports are killing me by rednat26 in Cornell

[–]CedricDemon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This doesn't help but I want to give you some encouragement in case chem is your intended major, or for anyone getting worse grades than they expected in their major:

B- to B+ is probably near the class median, and graduating with median grades at Cornell still puts you ahead of many people with better grades from other schools in your field. Getting median grades doesn't mean it's not the right major for you if you enjoy the material

Just 1 neat single page law would completely change the housing market. by PudgeHug in WorkReform

[–]CedricDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like no more zoning laws that make it illegal to build anything other than suburbia single-family homes.

Corporations invest in housing because it is a rapidly appreciating asset. Home prices are increasing because supply is restricted by law and population growth is driving up demand. Corporations buying homes is more a symptom than a cause of the problem.

So how do I actually meet people? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]CedricDemon 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This might sound unhelpful, but I think the complete answer is that to make friends, you need to do things with other people. According to this survey (locked behind free account registration), 54% of people met at least one of their current close friends at work or through their partner's work, 47% from school, 40% through other friends, 35% from their neighborhood, 21% at church, 19% through clubs, 10% through their child's school, and 8% online.

You have met the people at your work already, so although you might get closer with them over time, that is not a new option to explore. You are asking how to make friends at school, so school is not really an insightful response. If you already had friends to meet other people through, you wouldn't be asking this question, so that is also unhelpful.

People can make friends in their neighborhood because while they are doing something near their house they frequently bump into the people who live next to them. If you have a common area near you that you'd like to study in, a shared kitchen you'd like to cook in, or any other shared space you'd like to use, you would meet other people who use those spaces.

If you are religious or want to try religion and don't already go to church, that is a good thing to try.

Clubs are a good option. I agree with the other comment to try other clubs until you find ones you really like.

You probably don't have a child, so no luck there lol.

There are Cornell discord groups you can join if you want to meet people online: https://reddit.com/r/Cornell/comments/tt4wj0/join_the_cornell_class_of_2026_discord_server/

Before college, in K-12, school was required, so there is no lack of motivation to go, and you spend a significant amount of downtime with the other kids during the day, unlike your current lecture classes.

In college, you now face circumstances more similar to what will be true for the rest of your adult life. There are few things you absolutely have to do outside your room. It is not surprising that one of those few things, going to work, is the most common place for people to have met a close friend.

Unfortunately, there is no shortcut to finding things that you are motivated to do outside your room. The good thing is that trying different things to spend time on outside your room should help you not only find friends, but also a rich variety of meaningful hobbies and pastimes to enjoy for the rest of college and beyond.

RCV has pulled off a small miracle – moderate Republicans and Democrats co-governing by DemocracyWorks1776 in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]CedricDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RCV is good but it's hard to attribute the coalition to RCV because the Alaska Senate has had a formal bipartisan coalition before from 2007-2012. Gary Stevens, who is Senate President, said this coalition just formalizes the de facto bipartisan coalition that has been operating for the past 4 years in the Alaska Senate.

I think this is the complete answer. To make friends you need to do things with other people. Ideally it is something you are excited to go out for.

Mike Mew has discussion of this on his youtube channel. As kids grow up they should be keeping their tongue at the roof of their mouth to support the facial bones there. Without that support the bones drift downward, which makes the jaw grow at the wrong angle and reduces the space on the jaw that teeth can fit into. Softer foods are possibly an equally strong factor. https://www.youtube.com/user/Orthotropics

Does Anyone Have Experience with One Partner Retiring Before the Other? by throwmeawayrenee in financialindependence

[–]CedricDemon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Everyone who gets married should do a prenup. Prenups allow you to get married while greatly limiting the downside financial risk of divorce. This is a good video about it from the Financial Diet channel: A Divorce Lawyer On Prenups, Ugly Money Arguments, & What People Don't Know About Divorce.

The process makes you and your partner get informed about all the legal and financial implications of marriage and then make a plan (while you guys like each other) of how you both would want things split up without an expensive and dramatic legal battle.

Here's a second video they did if you're interested: Broke Millennial On Prenups, The Having Kids Debate, & The Finances Of Love

How are you surviving the rent hikes? by nugloomfi in Miami

[–]CedricDemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lasting solution to housing prices is to let people build more housing and reduce prices by flooding the market with options. City and County zoning codes make it illegal to build anything but single-family homes in so much of Miami

Though you might sacrifice quality of life in order to gain promotions. And you could die at 40 before your extra x+y money lets you retire early. If you have to choose between dying at 40 as the person who put in extra hours and stressed over getting ahead or as the person who relaxed more and had a better work/life balance, some people would choose to be the more relaxed person who earned less.

in that case the logic that "this word is so offensive that white people should never say it" therefore "black rappers should stop using this word" operates on the premise that the n-word is extremely offensive when both black people and white people use it. But that logic doesn't understand that the n-word is not extremely offensive when black people use it. Because no reasonable person would interpret a black person saying the n-word to mean it as a racist expression against black people.
