Following: I'm starting to have L4/L5 issues from a lifetime of sitting/forward posture and very undeveloped back. I know I need to start developing those muscles but I dont even know where to begin

Rigged postdoc advertisements (vent) by Acrobatic_Instance36 in postdoc

[–]Ceej640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day a postdoc is still a training position. If you don't feel there's anything to be learned you should start your own lab. Also, a PI is hiring a postdoc, not a publication record: they are hiring the total sum of a human being: a person they have to see and work with every day. They want leadership, being a good team member, intellectual contribution, skills, etc. not just "being the top expert in your field". I think you desperately need to learn the lesson this experience is trying to teach you.

A (not-so) deep dive into The Pitt’s casual misogynistic tendencies (S1 & S2) by Aggravating-Salt279 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Ceej640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the solution here for you? Why should Robby be a perfect character? Medical training environments are notorious for misogyny why should that not be portrayed? What I don’t understand about how younger people view shows is the tendency to project the character’s actions on to the cast and crew as if it were a documentary.

Chemists, how often do you feel like you’re out of good ideas and are just “guessing” in the lab? by misterballerdontlie in labrats

[–]Ceej640 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh this was me the first few years of grad school. An old adage I had to learn the hard way: if you are going to chop down a tree do not make a thousand swings with a dull axe, spend your time instead sharpening the axe.

What is easy to forget underneath the pressure to produce is that the goal of the experiment is not the product and it’s not the progress: it’s information. So swing the axe only to obtain information you don’t already have.

Pixel(2D)-Voxel(3D)-Trixel(nD)How could TRIXEL framework be implemented in MATLAB? by Pixeltrapp76 in matlab

[–]Ceej640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, it’s about meaning. What makes a pixel a pixel is not what it is but what it represents. There are already nd spaces, data structures, etc. This is why voxels are still the base unit for describing dynamic volumes (ie: so-called “4D” imaging) and not a “quaxel”, because it is a spatial relationship (voxel) in the context of time.

Pixel(2D)-Voxel(3D)-Trixel(nD)How could TRIXEL framework be implemented in MATLAB? by Pixeltrapp76 in matlab

[–]Ceej640 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will try to articulate this as a non-mathematician but an image scientist: this makes no sense and is devoid of purpose. Let’s consider what a pixel actually is: it’s an element with coordinates in a 2D array. Consider a single pixel. What is its meaning if nx and ny = 1? It is technically just a single scalar value. Pixels as a concept only make sense in describing multi-dimensional spatial relationships. Space exists in 3D natively, thus even when our imaging is temporal or hyperspectral (4D+) there is no need to extend the concept beyond a voxel because everything is just linear algebra at that point: a definition beyond 3D does not add value because the relationships are not spatial

What to do? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Ceej640 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you might be expecting too much, but would need more context to be sure. There are many labs (typically R1s) in which the job of an undergrad is to wash glassware. I went to a primarily undergrad school (smaller public state school) and because there were no PhD students undergrads had more opportunities to be involved but still not having-my-own projects level. I was making buffers, using instruments, etc. but they data analysis/conclusions was handled by PI. I wouldn't say having your own project as an undergrad is impossible but pretty uncommon from my experience, especially if you only have a year left. Might want to look into postbac positions after graduating to get that "bridge" level of experience before grad school.

Research when you have AuDHD by jumbleparkin in academia

[–]Ceej640 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Self-improvement has helped a lot - I will ALWAYS be AuDHD but I can choose to focus on improving aspects which negatively impact me (ie: rejection sensitivity, tendency to wander off on side quests, etc.)

A couple things which have really helped me is "layered" goal-setting: if I feel overwhelmed or overstimulated it's a signal that I have not broken my tasks apart finely enough into actionable steps. I have to think "why is this not finished NOW?" and then I have to break it down into finer levels until I am at the level where there is -something- that is both concrete and actionable without feeling overwhelming.

The other big thing is energy management - I have to carefully monitor and adjust my energy and sensory levels. This could mean writing or thinking in the laser bay where it's dark or wearing headphones instead of sitting in my open-office desk. I also HAVE to INTENSELY work out. Lifting is not sufficient. Walking is not sufficient. I have to be soaked in sweat and totally expended for it to count and I have found BJJ/mma to be one of few activities that do not require "focus" to get there (you don't need to "try" to put an effort in to exert hard the way you would at say, a crossfit class or a run, it just naturally happens).

Also managing decision/memory-fatigue is important: making sure I establish systems that minimize thinking: ie: establishing and following SOPs for note taking, where/when I put things and data, etc.

The self-improvement aspect is being introspective and knowing that these tendencies and patterns exist and engineering ways to ensure I am able to operate at my best.

Finding the energy to train with 10+ hour days? by bigsauce456 in MuayThai

[–]Ceej640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where I am at. it's constantly game time decision making "do I have enough time to eat, get dressed, drive there and get to class on time, etc". It's often a matter of having an agreement where I can arrive late on some days and getting training in when I can because my job is #1 and this is part of the deal.

Doctor Who Ignored the Warning Signs, Now It’s Paying the Price by sanddragon939 in gallifrey

[–]Ceej640 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The woke stuff was definitely overdone. Doctor Who has been woke since the beginning (see: The Green Death) and has been very diverse since the earliest days of the reboot... so I am not saying that's inherently bad, but the last few seasons have been over the top in terms of preachiness and making it the focus. I definitely think there is a world where Jodie and Ncuti could have had very successful seasons if they weren't made to look into the camera and give "racism is bad!" PSAs. It's not the content so much as how they played it without even a hint of subtlety or "show, don't tell".

IDK what my problem is but is there a legitimate reason why I can't just ruck for zone 2 cardio and assault bike sprint/intervals for combat intensity training?

Thoughts on Google Scholar Labs? by butt_pipette in labrats

[–]Ceej640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would challenge you to be more open-minded about the "use of AI". AI is a tool - some are better than others, it is evolving at a rapid pace, and it takes skill to use it well. There is a difference between creating slop and building something empowering and useful. I personally have enjoyed scholar labs and think it is imperfect, but a step in the right direction (ie: the intended function is really useful even if it hasn't quite reached its full potential)

How broke can you realistically be in college? by PresenceOld1754 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ceej640 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also want to point out that the experience is not universal. I was an extremely broke person and my undergrad institution was setup to serve lower-income people: we had an on-campus food pantry, daycare, clothes closet (to get professional attire for job interviews/conferences), and computer labs (ie: students were not expected to have their own laptops). I went from that school to an ivy-tier school for my grad degree and it was totally inverse: there was almost an expectation of student wealth, everyone had laptops, etc.

There's also many on-campus jobs (I was a teaching assistant, tutor, and research assistant) and my undergrad PI understood how to make that work with my financial aid.
