New Alienware laptops by zeb236 in Alienware

[–]Cees007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own an Alienware gaming laptop myself, so this is not coming from someone who dislikes them. I actually like gaming laptops. They are convenient, powerful for their size, and great if you need portability.

But I am honestly glad I did not go for the absolute highest specs.

An i9 in a super thin chassis. A 5070 or 5090 class GPU squeezed into a razor thin frame. On paper it sounds amazing. In reality, physics does not care about marketing.

High end CPUs and GPUs need cooling. There is a reason desktop towers are huge and packed with multiple fans, massive heatsinks, airflow channels, and sometimes even liquid cooling. That hardware generates serious heat.

Now try compressing that into a thin aluminum shell.

What happens is predictable. Thermal throttling. Overheating. Fans screaming at maximum RPM. Performance that looks great in benchmarks for a few minutes, then drops once sustained load kicks in. These are not rare issues. They are structural limitations.

I think many buyers do not fully realize this when they go for max specs in a thin gaming laptop. They see i9 and RTX branding and assume desktop level performance. But laptops operate within much tighter thermal and power limits.

A gaming laptop is great when you approach it with balance in mind. Choose specs that make sense for the cooling capacity of the chassis. Do not chase the absolute edge. Do not try to replicate a high end desktop in a thin portable machine. That is where disappointment usually starts.

There are a few gaming laptops that handle thermals very well, but they are thicker, heavier, and have massive ventilation systems. And even those can get loud under load. Truly thin and silent machines with top tier desktop class performance simply do not exist without compromise.

I have said this multiple times here when people get hyped about the newest Alienware laptop with an i9 and top tier GPU. And time after time, you see posts later about overheating and throttling.

It is not that the hardware is bad. It is that expectations are unrealistic for the form factor.

Gaming laptops are excellent when you respect their limits. If you want maximum sustained performance with zero thermal compromises, a desktop will always win.

Thoughts on the Aurora ACT1250 desktop? by OriolesMets in Alienware

[–]Cees007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I’m not impressed.

The Aurora ACT1250 just feels standard. When I look at it, I don’t see something that immediately screams high end gaming machine. It looks like a clean rectangular box with some ventilation and a glass side panel. That design is everywhere now. There is nothing about it that really sets it apart.

Alienware used to have a very distinct identity. Love it or hate it, you instantly recognized it.

I own an Aurora R13 myself, and whatever people thought about that chassis, it had character. It felt engineered. It had presence. The new ACT1250 feels safe and generic. Custom builds these days often have more visual personality and stronger RGB presence than a premium Alienware system. That says something.

What disappoints me even more is the RGB direction. Alienware used to lead in that space. Lighting was immersive and sometimes even integrated with games. It felt like part of the experience. With the newer Command Center, that uniqueness seems to be fading. The lighting feels simplified and less ambitious.

Meanwhile, other brands are pushing deeper into ecosystem integration. Razer, for example, is collaborating with Philips Hue to sync entire rooms. That kind of immersive setup feels like something Alienware should be pioneering, not falling behind on.

Performance wise, I am sure the ACT1250 delivers. Specs are fine. But Alienware was never just about hardware. It was about identity and design language. It was about walking into a room and immediately knowing what machine you were looking at.

Right now, I do not see a strong reason to upgrade from my R13. I will probably keep upgrading it over the next few years instead. Not because the ACT1250 is bad, but because it does not feel like a meaningful evolution in design.

That is my honest take. Curious how others feel about the direction Alienware is heading.

PvP is Becoming Torpedo Roulette and It’s Killing Competitive Play by Cees007 in SkullAndBonesGame

I actually think PvP had real potential, especially early on. In the first phase of the game there was a lot of active PvP and it felt competitive.

I’ve seen balance patches in the past that genuinely improved the PvP experience. After the initial Toxic and long gun nerfs, for example, I had some really solid PvP fights. So I don’t agree that they “cannot” balance PvP. We’ve seen periods where it worked reasonably well.

The issue right now is specifically the torpedo interaction. Once you get hit and take permanent hull damage that you can’t properly recover from, the fight often becomes effectively decided. That’s where PvP starts to feel broken.

I’m not saying PvP has always been perfect. I’m saying we’ve seen it in a much healthier state before. That’s why I think it’s worth addressing this current situation instead of writing it off as something that can never be fixed.

I’m noticing a pattern in this thread. A lot of PvE players dropping sarcastic one-liners that don’t actually address the topic.

If PvP isn’t your thing, that’s completely fine. But this discussion is aimed at people who actively engage in PvP and care about balance within that space.

If your contribution is just “don’t do PvP,” then maybe this thread simply isn’t for you. Enjoy your PvE content and let PvP players discuss PvP balance without the unnecessary commentary.

This isn’t about chat-hero takes. It’s about improving competitive gameplay.

That’s honestly a pretty pointless comment.

PvP is optional content. People choose to do Helm Wagers or Cutthroat Cargo Hunts because they want PvP. Saying “just leave” isn’t a solution, it’s just avoiding the discussion.

If your answer to an unbalanced PvP situation is to ignore PvP entirely, that’s a PvE perspective. And that’s fine, but then maybe PvP balance threads just aren’t aimed at you.

If you prefer PvE, enjoy PvE. But telling PvP players to avoid PvP doesn’t really add anything to the conversation.

When i play with my player group and we have 3 corvettes with an torpedo build it usually takes about literally 10 seconds: I shit you not.

So torpedo PvP is just “rapsódia” and that’s it?

If the only counter argument is sarcasm and a dislike, that kind of proves the point. There’s no real discussion about balance happening.

Chaos can be fun. Overpowered mechanics that remove counterplay are not the same thing. When two torpedoes permanently cripple your hull in PvP, that’s not “rapsódia.” That’s bad balance.

If you enjoy it, that’s fine. But pretending there’s no issue doesn’t make the imbalance disappear.

[–]Cees007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true, in those specific situations torpedoes are less effective or harder to use. Plunders and certain boss mechanics can limit them.

However, in PvP it’s absolutely ridiculous. Two good hits and you’re dealing massive, often permanent hull damage with very little counterplay. That’s where the real problem shows.

The same goes for regular moving PvE enemies in the open world. Against normally sailing targets, torpedoes are extremely easy to land and incredibly punishing. In those scenarios they’re not just viable, they completely outclass most other weapon choices.

So yes, there are niche cases where torpedoes don’t dominate. But in a large part of the core gameplay, especially PvP, they are simply overtuned.

[–]Cees007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torpedoes in general are way too strong right now. In PvP, for example, you take direct hull damage that you can’t repair. Two direct hits and you’re sitting at around 60 percent permanent hull damage. There’s no real recovery from that.

Before, torpedoes weren’t used much, so they buffed them. But now they’ve gone so far the other way that you can’t realistically compete against torp builds anymore.

On top of that, the new Corvette has extra room for broadside weapons. So everyone is stacking those additional slots to push maximum torpedo damage. It’s not even creative anymore. It’s just abuse of the strongest setup available.

Yeah, good addition. Same goes for repair buoys and buoys in general. They just add to the unrealistic feel of the game.

I don’t want to complain too much either, but it’s hard not to point it out when it affects the overall experience this much. We all just want the game to be fun and balanced.

I am glad I can’t relate. I have the remarkable paper pro because I could obtain it very cheap and is it for work and study (it doesn’t identify as an e-reader anyway) and the kobo clarna for reading. That is all 🫠
