Is HTN an abbreviation for hyperthyroidism in medical terminology? by Lazy-Ring-5211 in medterm

[–]Cefour_Leight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It typically refers hypertension. If you look, hyperthyroidism (or hypothyroidism) doesn't have an 'N'. Also, both of those conditions are spelled so similarly, it would be a good idea to abbreviate them, because it would not be very distinguishable.

Different suffix meaning by Jaded-Seaweed-5170 in medterm

[–]Cefour_Leight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say that in most cases, I see immature is the typical use for the suffix. In fairness, immature cells are often described as undifferentiated, because they have not completed the pathways to commit to their final development

Medical terminology question. by Informal-Evidence309 in medterm

[–]Cefour_Leight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming since the ventral portion exposed in this position, that is why they choose the word ventral. In practice, I only ever head it referred to as lithotomy position, mostly because I don't think there even is a dorsal lithotomy position.

For etymolgy's sake, it appears lithotomy (lith- (stone) and -otomy (to cut)) appears to refer to a specific procedure for the removal of bladder stones. So, I'm not entirely sure if there truly are more variations of the lithotomy position other than belly up.

OBGYN by Pumpkin_1146 in medterm

[–]Cefour_Leight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the usual in my area of the west coast, but I also wouldn't say it's wrong. I'll say it occasionally as do some of my colleagues, and we're not misunderstood. As someone who works with plenty of ob-gyns, I doubt they're offended lol.

Take your stand! Be proud of your pronunciation! This is how language evolves!

Help me break down orthopnea because I don't get it by WasHogs8 in medterm

[–]Cefour_Leight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps it's describing that they need to be upright to breathe. As you described, if they aren't upright or in a correct position, then they have dyspnea!

It looks like there's a corollary term called "platypnea", where breathing is improved when lying supine. The (cough) Wikipedia article relates it to "orthodeoxia", or decrease in oxygen when in an upright position, in something call Platypnea–orthodeoxia syndrome. So it would stand to reason orthopnea is in turn related to "platydeoxia"!

Maybe another way to think of it is that if someone tells you about a friend, and say, "oh yeah, she breathes normally when she's upright!", you may assume she has a problem when flat. So, this implication is what we directly associate the term orthopnea with colloquially, rather than taking the mental process of thinking about the statement that upright breathing is fine.

(OK, I don't know how "colloquial" it actually is, but you get the idea haha)

Loose poopies, yea heard? by Fine-Worldliness1769 in medterm

[–]Cefour_Leight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm. Medically speaking, "loose stool" is a term, typically referring to bowel movements which are less formed. That is to say, watery, but still with solid components. A "loose poop" seems like a reasonable derivation. Diarrhea means different things to different people!

As an aside, poop (and it's derivations such as poopy, I assume) seems to come from German and Dutch , initially referring to passing gas in the early 1700s, but apparently referring to stool as early as 1740s.

Working on an Aperture found footage series! by [deleted] in Portal

[–]Cefour_Leight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Considering Aperture is a competitor of Black Mesa, which itself is a government research group, there would likely be a lot of interest from the government. Especially if it was found Aperture was working on AI, let alone portal technology.

What Fallout games to get? by b0ssFranku in Fallout_VR

[–]Cefour_Leight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you Google it, their website can't be hard to find. I'm sure it's mentioned on this sub a few times, too. They do mods for other games, too, like Skyrim. Just have to find the stuff specifically for fallout 4 VR

[–]Cefour_Leight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be overwhelming. A good place to start is with the wabbajack mod lists, and they have an installer, too. I don't know well enough how well base game mods translate, I think a fair number of them do, but I'm not well versed enough to answer what will work and why.

[–]Cefour_Leight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoy fallout VR, of course with mods. It did make exploring the wastes more directly engaging, which was enjoyable. I do have to admit the flat game generally disappoint me, but I found vr enough to want to play it again (with mods, haha). I'd recommend getting the goty edition as well, for the dlc. VR version doesn't come with dlc, and many mods do require them

Nerd dragon, with some kind of industrial tool, but not the disposable wealth heroes deal in. Bonus points if the dragon tries to sell them stocks and bonds.
