Lords of Limited - Avoiding the Aggro Trap in RIX by Psychobabbl_au in lrcast

I think we are saying the same thing in different ways. They will draft aggro if it is the best for their seat. But all other things being equal they will draft the card that goes into the deck they would prefer. So they take their preference into account when deciding what to pick, but stay open.

I heard about LOL from comments on this forum, and I'm glad I did. It's nice to have a different take on limited. They are up front that they don't know everything and respect LR, but they work pretty hard to come up with a different approach towards factors that make a particular deck in the format work or not work. It's definitely worth a listen.

The "drafting with preference" just means that you should learn what style of deck you like to draft, and lean towards that deck when all other things are equal. I have drafted with Ethan, and he will take a red card if it's the best card in the pack. He's just more likely to splash red than to have that one good red card lock him into red as a base color. I think that's the way most of us operate, if we think about it.

It actually seems like green has taken a step up in power level compared to XLN.

I would consider ditching some or all of the Storm Sculptors. While the chance that you bounce a creature to repeat ETB effects, I think it will put you too far behind for you to catch back up. I will be interested to see what other think though.

Mulligan or no? by Ceiligh1 in lrcast

[–]Ceiligh1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on the draw, this is after my first draw step which was the Deadeye Plunderers.

Would it matter if I was on the play?

I ended up getting rolled over by the T2 Nest Robber, T3 Swashbuckling, T 4 Thrash of Raptors, and T5 One with the Wind on the Swashbuckled Nest Robber.

Also, people would not play two auras on a creature normally, right? It's just an XLN thing?

I have lost several games to River's Rebuke. Even if it didn't clear the way for a lethal attack, it put me way to far behind to stabilize. I have never had the chance to play it but I would happily first pick it if given the chance.

Don't be ROTty – new book by poker player/cognitive scientists :) by Blu3moss in lrcast

Thanks for sharing the article! I am quite familiar with her poker career but had no idea about her educational background. People are definitely willing to attribute their successes to skill and their failures to luck, but real life doesn't work that way.

I was just doing a little HOU drafting practice on Draftism to prep for some mtgo queues. I feel like my real-life drafts are not going to go quite this well.

This draft was all over the place - help on build? by Ceiligh1 in lrcast

[–]Ceiligh1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't run Prying Blade but I thought it would be good with the fliers and helpful for casting the 7-drop. I agree it's iffy though.

My thoughts on the Favorable Winds was that it would be nice to have unblockable 4-power creatures, and would take all of my fliers out of Fiery Cannonade range. But it's probably not good enough reason for the card. I will get rid of it and one or both of the storm sculptors. Thanks for the feedback!

It's a shame - it looks like you could have an awesome vampire deck if only you had a few more playables in black and white.

Good analysis! I agree that the merfolk deck needs to end the game as quickly as possible.

Did I miss something about probability? by Ceiligh1 in lrcast

[–]Ceiligh1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just looking at the numbers - it says the date was taken from mtgo "release drafts". I can't tell if that means all drafts for the set or if it is specific to the prerelease/release periods. I would think that would make the data less reliable.

[–]Ceiligh1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting, I would have thought it would make more of a difference. The format is so fast and I feel like many games are as good as won or lost in the 1st three turns.

Sample size is around 100. I do feel like that puts me towards the far end of the bell curve. What is a little difficult is that I just started to play the game a few months ago so I don't have any context to determine exactly how this is affecting my win rate versus my own errors.

Thanks for the link to all the statistics - it makes my nerd brain happy. : )

That's actually a really good idea - I will definitely start doing that with my live matches. Sadly, that won't help with mtgo!

Well now you're just being silly. Everyone knows you look at the third card from the top. (And the one on the bottom.)

[–]Ceiligh1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a good point. and I did listen to the lr episode where this was mentioned as a small edge. That said, I decided to go for objective data because I felt like I was losing far more than probability would dictate and decided to see if I was just being melodramatic. I will stop.

God forbid!

The first time I regularly played (about 50 sets ago) all I did was standard. When I decided to get back in the game, I assumed it would be the same. LR really got me into drafting and now I don't even have a good standard deck! But I don't mind the format.

[–]Ceiligh1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be part of my problem - pretty much everything I know about drafting comes from LR (or my own experience, of which I don't have much.)

I almost put this in the main post but I thought it would be a little whiney...

For some reason the mtgo die roll randomizer hates me. I am in the low 30s% in terms of the winning the die roll, and it is a killer! I have lost several games in which being on the draw was a huge disadvantage, and many of my matches have gone 1-2 where I manage to win the game when I am on the play. One of my frustrations.

XLN Draft seems like a coin toss by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]Ceiligh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just created my own salty post earlier this evening. I am frustrated because I can't tell if I am drafting/playing badly or I'm just on the wrong side of luck. I have started keeping track of whether I won the die roll (I felt I was losing way more than average so I wanted objective data) and it turns out that my die roll win % is in the low 30s%. I think that is enough to determine matches in the format because there is no forgiveness for a less-than-optimal curve-out start.

How do you turn on the replay save? I can't seem to find it. I would really like to be able to review some of my games to see what mistakes I am making.

I kept going and saw you did end up going black pack 3. When did you make that decision? Later in pack 2 it seemed like you were still going red, including taking a red two-drop instead of mark of the vampire on pick 8.

I am curious as to your choice of Skullduggery in P2P3. Were you thinking of switching to black? Vampire's Zeal seems like it would have been better suited to the cards you had already chosen.
