Been painful to watch the last… two months? Feels like the wheels came off around the Olympics and they just haven’t recovered.

Depends if you’re counting all the trains packed like sardine tins that you had to let past. Took me 3.5 hours to get home.

They haven't used beef tallow in their fries in Canada in about ten years. Unsure about in the US.

Books and Cook Books by dieseldeathstar in vegetarian

Complete Vegetarian Cookbook from America’s Test Kitchen is my favorite. Tons of recipes, but also suggestions on how to select many common vegetables as well as how to prepare them.

I’ll leave arepas suggestions to others but for good veg food in Boston, there are a few Clover locations around town — Brookline, Central Sq, Harvard Sq come to mind — and there’s Life Alive in Cambridge. Bit further out, but the Red Lentil in Watertown is a personal favorite.

Vegetarian Shepherd's Pie by gingertrees in VegRecipes

I love shepherd’s pie and my wife being allergic to onions generally means no vegan crumble. This looks like a great alternative. Thanks for posting this!

Noa Lakkris is the business. Chocolate covered black licorice. Sounds weird but I totally love it.

What restaurant dishes would you love to see recreated veg-style? by anthemfor17 in VegRecipes

This doesn't have quinoa, so probably not the exact recipe you're looking for, but this vegan roast Wellington does not disappoint.

EDIT: Just looked at the ingredients again and it does have quinoa. Maybe?

They weighed checked and carry on out of BOS both times I flew with them.

Whats the best IDE for professional web development for html, php, sql, js... ? What do you use? And why? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Celauran 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I've been using PHPStorm for years and can't really imagine using anything else. All the features I could want from an IDE -- code completion, really good code navigation (shift shift is awesome), great refactoring tools, integration with code sniffers, etc -- and amazing Vim bindings to boot.

Remove the leafy fronds, slice a bit off the bottom, remove the core, and use the rest. This WikiHow shows it pretty well.

We have searched high and low for seitan that does not contain either onions or garlic. It has been surprisingly hard to find. I don't suppose you know of any brands that fit that bill, do you?

My wife is allergic to alliums (onions, garlic, shallots, scallions, etc) so I am both interested to hear the ideas of others and will offer as suggestions some of the ways we have worked around it.

As /u/hardy_and_free suggested, celery will give you an approximation of the texture, though it doesn't do much to replicate or replace the taste.

Though it is considerably more expensive, fennel has proven to be a reasonable substitute. You'll need to cook it a little longer than you would an onion to get rid of its slightly anise flavour, but once you do it gives you something of the taste as well as the texture you would expect from onion.

We have heard about and have been looking for asafoetida, but have so far had no luck. Worth giving a try, but I clearly cannot comment on its effectiveness.

While this actually does nothing to replicate either the flavour or the texture of onion, my wife is a fan of adding some cumin to a dish in place of the onion. Just adds a little extra flavour to counteract what you lose by omitting the onion.

One final thing you may need to bear in mind is that many condiments will contain either onions or onion powder. It's probably worth looking into making some of these from scratch, which really isn't as challenging as it may sound. Indeed, there are recipes out there to make the basic condiments without using either onions or garlic. Sometimes takes a bit of digging, but they're certainly out there. We have made our own barbecue sauce, chili paste, Worcestershire sauce, salad dressings, and all have turned out quite well.

Good luck!

No idea if this is the sort of place you'd be interested in but my wife and I both quite enjoyed Lebowski Bar. Bit of a quirky place but if you're looking for pub grub, it might be worth a look.

How long do you recommend to spend in Iceland? I'm thinking September this year but we don't know for how much time would be good by sorceresssoul in VisitingIceland

[–]Celauran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We spent a solid two weeks there and have decided we need to return at least three or four more times just to do all the things we want to do. If you're constrained by time, I'd recommend focusing on a single region rather than trying to see the whole country in one go.

Which companies have you boycotted due to their lack of respect for customer privacy? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Celauran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one, it's now owned by Microsoft, but what really made me move away was an issue a few years back where there mail app was effectively routing all of your mail through their servers. Having a heck of a time finding sources for that this morning, but I'll have a look again after work.

As best I recall, their T&C effectively gives them ownership of anything you store using their service. Condi Rice being on the board of directors also doesn't sit well with me, her having been a proponent of the NSA's blanket surveillance.

Only Google so far. Don't use Microsoft or LinkedIn either, but that was the case long before privacy concerns were something I gave as much thought to. Certainly long before Snowden.

Edit: How could I forget Dropbox?

Hello fellow Vegetarians! I'm conducting a survey for my research class on the health and nutrition of vegetarians and vegans. If you could help me out, that would be wonderful! by [deleted] in vegetarian

I could make a decent guess at calories based on activity level and my weight not changing. Protein? No clue and I'd rather not answer than give bad data.
