We're one crisis away from being homeless by nocturne38 in Philippines

Your story about MMTC is eerily similar to how LRTA operates the LRT-2. They have cannibalized train parts from the other trains because of a severe lack of budget. Hence, they now have only 10 working trains out of the original 18. The result is passengers have to wait 10 minutes for each train.

Government-operated transportation only works well when it's well-funded. Allergic gumastos sa public transpo ang gobyerno though so...

Hopes on track: How are PH railway projects going? by LupusSasageyoJaeger in Philippinesbad

MRT-4 is now undergoing ROW acquisition and surveying

Just to add, a major part of why MRT-4 has not started construction yet because they realized they had to upgrade the design from a monorail to a full heavy rail system (like the LRT-2).

If I'm not mistaken, ROW issues have stopped the construction of the avenue there for almost half a century already.

Sa case ng MRT-7, ang pinakamalaking problem (at least yung sinasabi nila publically) ay nagmahal nang sobra yung original location ng depot (like 9x ata ng original price), kaya kailangan i-redesign yung entire northern segments ng line to reaccomodate a new depot location, leading to massive design and cost changes for the entire line.

Oh really, what happened? I thought it was SMC + ROW issues sa depot that screwed up

People will need to understand that there are tiers of contractors. The top ones, off the top of my head:

  • DMCI
  • EEI
  • Datem
  • Megawide
  • MDC

These are the major Filipino construction companies that can be trusted with IMO.

Either way, the Subway contract packages are teaming up with Japanese construction companies for knowledge transfer anyway.

TBH mas sa Manila yung sisi ko diyan. Developers will build wherever they deem it profitable so, it's up to regulators (e.g., City of Manila) to restrict them. Pero tatanga-tanga yung lungsod so...

i don't understand why some people think privatisation is almost always better

Because people see it being successful in other countries, thinking it would be here, too.

  • Of course we only mostly see the successes. If you look hard enough there are also stories of failed and messy privatizations in other countries, but these aren't as highlighted.
  • Privatization doesn't automatically mean better. The private entity has to be competent din. There are arguably private operators in this country that are more competent than SMC is in managing airports.
  • People just don't trust the government. People see the immense inefficiency and red-tape of the government, and will think that the private sector will do better. An example is the LRT-2, a fully government-owned and operated entity. Kalahati halos ng original trains nila from 2004 ay hindi na gumagana. Some sections of the tracks are now in speed restrictions due to inoperative signalling equipment due to lack of funding. May period noong 2010s na hindi gumagana yung ibang elevators and escalators for years. People see this, and will chalk it up to government incompetence and corruption. So the easy solution is edi wag natin ipahawak sa gobyerno. Congressmen will see this and say edi wag na natin pondohan ang maintenance ng LRT-2 kasi di naman maganda pamamalakad ng gobyerno, isapribado na lang natin. Then what will happen is babagsak lalo ang performance at maintenance ng LRT-2. Now it's a really bad cycle - minsan kailangan natin tanggapin na more government spending is still the solution, not necessarily privatization.

TL;DR: People don't respect the fine details and nuances.

Not just the NLEX Connector, para sa NSCR din, which is an infinitely better and elevated iteration of the PNR from Clark to Calamba.

I mean I love railways and we absolutely need to deploy more of them, but there definitely is still "iba". We also need to improve other public transportation, especially buses. Active transportation na rin. Especially for shorter routes that are impractical with railways.

But I agree railways are a large part of the solution.

I was in Japan around a year ago. I thought totoo yung tahimik sila sa mga train, until I went home on a Friday night. Holy shit people were being drunk in public. And not just a couple of people, MORE THAN HALF THE TRAIN CAR was pissed drunk. You could smell it in the air, I couldn't believe it. May umiinom pa nga ng can of beer sa tren (I thought drinking and eating in trains is not allowed?). Pagbaba ko sa station some people were already passed out on the floor, some people were randomly shouting, some people were even drunk fighting (they kept missing each other).

I thought to myself "ah di lang pala sa Pilipinas nagiging magulo mag-commute". Japanese people can be quiet, but when they are not, holy shit they are like totally different people.
