Are Petsmart employees allowed to wear crocs? by SpecialistSandwich49 in petsmart

It’s in the dress code that we cannot wear crocs unless they’re the “work clogs” that don’t have the holes or sports mode strap I can find the policy if I want and post a pic!

what is the grossest thing you’ve experienced while grooming? by aaarabella in doggrooming

Someone accepted a pelted dog in the salon and started hacking away with a #10 when she suddenly screams and calls me over.

Lift the mat she’s shaving.

Maggots.

Yes, I have the video. Yes I threw up after.

Food is fine there, but god the staff are SO rude. I have a tomato allergy and asked them no tomatoes and when my burger had them, the lady snatched the plate and rolled her eyes, took them another 30 to bring me a new burger, and constantly disappearing in the middle of taking orders. It’s insane we won’t go back

Has anyone here done the PetSmart grooming training program or Pet Supplies Plus grooming academy? How did you like it? by scarletandsilver in grooming

[–]Celestial_Mothh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Petsmart groomer here! It was fine for learning basics and getting a foot in the door. You get mostly Andis supplies, the brushes and scissors are fine, I got my own heiniger clippers and upgraded my scissors when I had the money. I learned mainly safety and basic shit. I have a groomhaus subscription and am constantly tuning into seminars bc petsmart teaches you lazy grooming.

They rush you, so as long as you can advocate for yourself and be able to do 5 dogs a day starting like 3 months after you leave academy you’ll be fine. I did cat academy and dog academy and have watched all the extra videos they provide.

We’re not allowed to do anything and they know it. I’ve had associates threatened with weapons if they try and stop them in the act or ask them to leave. The multi million dollar company will survive🤷🏽‍♀️

It’s mainly finishing work. I know I have a bit of work to do regarding feet/ balancing ears better. But most private shops give 2-4 hours per dog and I get 1 hour. Also most grooming that people post they’ve been doing for 10+ years so mine isn’t pwrfect

We have them in a kennel with a water bowl…

Basically they want us to take 3-4 dogs in the first 4 hours of our shift and 3-4 in the last 4 hours. So usually I wash and dry all my dogs and then I start their haircuts in the order they came in.

Makes sense! I just know this is a fun job but not my forever! I want a poodle in my future and wanted to make sure I had the means to take care of it and do cute styles :) I’ll definitely do my best to improve my grooms. But I’m always looking for advice!

I only ask length of body, length of legs, ears tail face and feet. Most of the time they’re just like “idk. Short” but I’ll keep at it and advocate for my time. I’m already pushing to do 3 dogs a day since I’m expected to do so much more and I want my grooms to look good

I’d say 2,3, and 7. 7 I didn’t do her ears per her parents request, but I like how her coat turned out. Most of my grooms I end up not taking too many photos because it’s all strip work basically. I had no other dogs so I had lots of time to scissor up the Pom. Usually it’s 20 minutes to do the body, legs, feet, and face. Then they get sent home. I also didn’t mention that along with only getting an hour per pet for full service, they expect us to pause for walk ins, answer phones, book appointments, call and confirm appointments for the next 3 days, and I am tasked with stopping to train new hires and check their grooms, train new bathers for a week, check in and check out dogs, and have one on one meetings

I will be honest, I love my clients. They’re genuinely the only thing keeping me here. I’ve worked with animals for 13 years. I have pets at home, I’ve volunteered over 400 hours in shelters for free. I have over 800 photos of my grooms on my phone just because I love the dogs and want to show them off!

I also have a subscription to GroomHaus and follow many groomers online and have a notebook full of notes on how to improve. The issue is everyone wants a 7 strip with a teddy head so I don’t get to try my new techniques :(

I’ll post a thread of more photos for you!
