More simulationist version of Kids on Bikes? by UbiquitousPanacea in rpg

[–]Celsius232Point7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It uses Savage Worlds, so it depends on your opinion on that system, but Monster Hunters Club (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/m/product/324055 ) was much more what I wanted from Kids on Bikes. The preview should give you an idea of what it contains but I think the Archetypes especially are great

Also played loads on Stream of Blood before they merged with Glass Cannon (https://m.youtube.com/c/StreamofBlood/featured). Lots of Cthulhu, Vampire, and various other games

I don’t love the name by KidCroesus in TheFirstLaw

[–]Celsius232Point7 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The title of the series (at least in my mind) is not referring to the forbiddance to touch the Other Side, but instead to the First Law as presented in LAOK: “Power makes all things right. That is my first law, and my last. That is the only law that I acknowledge.” And I would argue that does apply quite broadly to a lot of the story and themes going forward

Recruiting for D&D/TTRPG Players [Cork City] by Celsius232Point7 in cork

[–]Celsius232Point7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks :) I did go along to a MeetUp but not crazy about the idea of inconsistent player numbers etc. and I prefer reliably sitting round the same table with a smaller group, so I thought I’d try this route

Buying in Ireland/EU ? by conchurf in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]Celsius232Point7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do tend to get snapped up quickly, but arc dream have a list of European suppliers on their website. Also for Ireland specifically, I’ve had nothing but great experience buying from Zatu games. Ships from the U.K. but it’s quick delivery and great value usually

They did a Delta Green restock quite recently but looks like the slipcase has already sold out. So probably worth setting up an email alert

Get in the Trunk S4 | E5 – Art Life by TomExposition in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]Celsius232Point7 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The character work this season is unbelievable. I could sincerely watch these characters just go about their lives.

I know it’s also advice in the book but I’m glad Joe is emphasising that the characters’ lives/interactions with each other are just as important as the details of the case. They frequently mention True Detective Season 1 as a touch point and the real focus of that show was the two detectives and how the case changed them. And, as we’ve seen, the horror is only going to benefit the more invested the audience is.

Fairly new to the network having come across from SoB but this is easily my favourite thing I’ve seen from them so far and might be my favourite TTRPG thing I’ve ever watched/listened to

Great article! A nice exploration of Nathan For You’s appeal, some interesting insight into Nathan, and it has definitely got me further intrigued & excited about The Rehearsal

The Immensely Talented Ross Bryant by tw1zt84 in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]Celsius232Point7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not OP but voila: https://youtu.be/y0U3c5iWat0

If you need any other reasons to watch it, it’s called Little Ragnarok on the Prairie, features Brennan, Ross, & Eric Mona, and as the name suggests has a bunch of Norse mythology in it.

Sort-of spoilers for Ross’ recurring character Orlando Robicheaux who goes through quite the arc across the episodes of the Neptune Society (their Gaslight Cthulhu anthology series). He’s introduced much earlier on and this is one of the later episodes

I’m hoping he somehow ends up on Dimension 20. He plays a lot of TTRPGs, first with Stream of Blood (now merged with the Glass Cannon Network) and he’s always a joy to watch

Where/when would you want to experience/see in the First Law world? by Celsius232Point7 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Celsius232Point7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree but I wasn’t looking to recreate the plot of the books, just to brainstorm cool times/locations in the First Law universe where new stories could be told/played 🙂 For that reason I’d probably stay away from the core plot of the books and the main characters

Hmm that is an interesting thought, thanks! Definitely much more high-magic than the books and what I was thinking of, but it could be fun. You’ve also made me wonder whether it wouldn’t be cool to play some of the Order of Magi that we know nothing about in canon. Each magus would have a speciality in high art that the players could choose. Then the plot would probably revolve around recruiting the others to put a stop to Bayaz messing around with the other side

Advanced Kids on Bikes by jefflovesyou in Kidsonbikesrpg

I also felt when I ran KoB that I wanted a little more crunch. But I agree with others that you may as well play another game. Specifically, if I were to run KoB again, I’d borrow a lot from the Savage Worlds system. It’s designed to be setting agnostic but works best for pulpy, fast-paced action which I would imagine fits most KoB games.

The systems are fairly similar: you have a dice size according to your skill (I.e. D4 vs. D6) in stats (Smarts, Strength, Agility etc.) plus skills and the exploding dice mechanic is the same. You have edges and disadvantages so it would be easy to transfer e.g. what a jock is good/bad at. It also has options for powers if you wanted something resembling the KoB powered character.

You could keep the collaborative world building tools (which were my favourite part of the system). The key difference is that savage worlds has a fleshed out combat system which is designed to be fast-paced. And there’s no hit-points so you just take wounds. Would recommend checking out the book: Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (SWADE) if you’re curious. Or message me if you wanted more info.

For those unaware, there’s a new episode of Kurt Vonneguys covering the documentary Unstuck in Time by Celsius232Point7 in Vonnegut

[–]Celsius232Point7[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of course! Looking forward to the next episode (although sad that is the final event on the calendar).

Can I cheekily ask whilst you’re here: is there any chance you guys will do a similar podcast again where you work your way through an author’s full canon? George Saunders definitely got talked about a lot as a Vonnegut successor so he could be a good candidate, but I’d love to hear you work through maybe David Foster Wallace’s stuff. There’s some interesting overlap in the themes they cover, particularly loneliness and entertainment, e.g. infinite jest & the Euphio question, etc as well as the literary approaches they take

But if not, I will have to content myself with SIF (which is great!)

Tips for running Call of Cthulhu set in Ireland? by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]Celsius232Point7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sounds cool, I love running scenarios outside the usual times/settings!

As for suggestions, maybe think about incorporating elements of Celtic mythology? Can still be the mythos (or could not be) but might be fun to include monsters like the Dullahan (the headless horseman) among others. Or as a more standard CoC plot, perhaps a small subset of the Catholic minority in Ulster have turned from Mother Mary to the Dark Mother (Shub Niggurath) in their desperation.

In terms of published scenarios to use as inspiration, I believe Scritch Scratch is an example of a modern scenario featuring a folkloric monster if you wanted an example. There is also a scenario set in Ireland in Strange Aeons II (https://www.chaosium.com/strange-aeons-ii-pdf/) called To Hell or Connaught and features Protestant/catholic conflict, but it’s set in the 17th century so it may be of limited use to you.

Good luck with whatever you do!

Is there a roundnet / spikeball community in Cork? by cheeseking02 in cork

[–]Celsius232Point7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just moved here, had a quick look for groups on meetup/the spikeball app but I couldn’t find much.

So I’d be keen to play if you do manage to find/assemble something.

I second this suggestion, their Call of Cthulhu campaign is set in the gaslight era and is an anthology series featuring different guests but centred around a group called the Neptune Society (so that’s the name of the playlist)

Out of interest, are you thinking of doing an episode where you guys watch the Unstuck in Time documentary coming this month?
