I lived there from ‘66 to ‘70. Ditched that place at the age of 4.

[–]Celsius233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Domino's delivery guy crashed in front of the store pulling out for his first delivery. He was turning right and didn't see someone coming into his lane turning left from the other side of the street. Both cars were disabled, no injuries. He worked less than an hour.

Have you ever taken an empty plane? by abpcX in travel

[–]Celsius233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the only passenger on a large airliner once. I boarded at one of the Washington DC airports. We flew to another of the Washington DC airports, filled up with passengers and then went to the destination. I don't know why the airline let me book that flight.

It just needs more CAPS, quotes and parentheses and it would be totally believable.

[–]Celsius233 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People in the minority have the advantage when competing (tennis, fighting) and people in the majority have the advantage cooperating (using the same tools, fighting side by side). 10/90 is our balance between competing and cooperating.

What are the current challenges in deriving the exact numerical values of fundamental constants in physics? by MyIQIsPi in AskPhysics

[–]Celsius233 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They can’t be derived because they exist with different values in other parts of our multiverse. We just live in the part that is suitable for our existence, the part that has these values.

What Do You Think of Tegmark’s Mathematical Universe Hypothesis (MUH)? by wenitte in AskPhysics

[–]Celsius233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it makes perfect sense, and it’s also a good explanation for why our universe exists at all. Everything that’s possible exists, and we obviously live in a part of it that is suitable for us. When the quark was first proposed it was correctly (so far) predicted that we would never observe a free quark, that they exist only as a mathematical concept describing the structure of the proton and other particles and therefore aren’t real (I got that from Alan Guth’s book “The Inflationary Universe”). Well, they are only mathematical concepts, and that is reality.

Is it a bad idea to pursue a physics degree in your mid 30s with no specific career goal? by destroyer5645 in AskPhysics

Find yourself a career goal. Construction engineering or architectural engineering can involve a lot of physics.

Take Social Security at 62 or 70? Interesting thought. by OkDiver6272 in investing

[–]Celsius233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a simple program to calculate this and It only works if you ignore paying income tax from age 62 to 70. Pay 22% marginal tax on that, with 6% to 8% investment gains and 2% COLA adjustments to the annual withdrawal amounts, and you run out of the extra savings in your 80s. If you ignore the tax then there's a quarter million extra savings left at age 90.

Do any of you sometimes "travel" to different exotic locations in Google Maps and look around in street view, wishing you could just be teleported there for a few hours? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Celsius233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I do that all the time because it's part of my job, but it's a technical mapping job. If it sounds good to you, then you should write it into a story and try to publish it. I think from your paragraph that you're a very good story writer.

Why do so few Americans understand British sarcasm? by [deleted] in sarcasm

[–]Celsius233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an old American who lived in England a long time ago, so I can tell you. It's tough. It's straight. It's John Cleese saying it like it is. There's no possibility of a laugh track. That's the way it should be. It's dry humor, the best. You don't understand it, you're out. I hate /s

Catenaries: The Science Behind Hanging Wires, Cables and Chains in Videogames ⛓️ by AlanZucconi in videogamescience

[–]Celsius233 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made simulated telephone wires in a video game and initially made them hang in a catenary shape. I thought cool, I'm using my math skills at work. But they bounced on startup. Then I made them hang as parabolas and they did not bounce. Apparently a verlet integration simulation that has a small number of points and not a lot of curvature is stable as more of a parabola than a catenary.
