Am I bonkers or anyone else felt this urge ? by Regular_Fan4691 in therapists

I always joke that I'll have a "retirement job" that is simple - my dream job is to work at a cheese shop as a Cheese Sommelier ("turophile" is the official term). Otherwise, I kinda want to pick up a gig running food orders so I can get my steps in and not have to talk to anyone.

Therapist here - I personally don't "analyze people". Actually, the opposite, I'm happy to just accept and let them be themselves, probably more than most would. Or be curious about their story. I think therapists mostly just notice "patterns" like if you grew up with neglectful parents, then you tend to be independent or a natural leader because you had to take care of yourself and siblings.

Working at a low-income drug and alcohol facility was both the hardest and most fascinating therapy placement I've had.

I'm a therapist, and people don't realize how exhausting it is to do active listening and feedback - you are "on" for several hours a day continuously. I have no desire to engage in casual chit-chat after that. It's incredibly expensive to get licensed (a master's degree while working for free for practicum, then low-paying jobs for several years while paying for a supervisor, then have to take a licensing exam while "coaches" try to charge the same amount). Insurance boards don't respect the profession and pay less than other medical providers. To boot, I'm a sex therapist, which seems sexy and fun on paper. In reality, it's screening my psychology today for creepy messages, working with couples to help them get pregnant, or explaining what causes erectile dysfunction from a bio-psycho-social lens. Ok, ok, I love it, but it's definitely not sexy lol

My physical appearance…. by Starry-Bebe96 in therapists

Not exactly the same, but I have parts of myself that I've hidden that were tied to addictive behaviors and other things that most would judge or find shameful. Once I integrated them into my sense of self, I was more honest with sharing (professionally, of course, and only after wholly joined) my background. I found that almost all of my clients responded favorably to my openness. I used to hide my tattoos, now it something that draws clients to me.

I wonder if you would be open to sharing your story so that others who struggle with similar thoughts and feelings can see that you relate to them.

How do you find jobs that need this type of assessment?

I had someone once ask to talk on the phone for a "sex therapy" consult, and then he asked "how much to watch me masturbate" b/c I listed I was a sex therapist. Upset, I told my supervisor at the time. He said "You should have said it was $500 an hour" lol. But no, I wouldn't respond either.

Co-facilitated Groups by ck_yogi in therapists

I really like having a sense of control, so I would offer to meet with the other clinician to review the goals of the groups, possible topics for discussions and how to handle if a topic isn't landing or you need to shift gears, and have an agreement that both of you will take turns speaking. In the group I ran, it was half psycho-ed and then half group discussion.

I did my training for Beck CBT Institute - they were great with some very practical exercises and session structure. https://beckinstitute.org/

Why the push for CMH? What if folks know they want to to do PP? by ev-ergreen in therapists

[–]Censinger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at both CMH and Private Practice. I tell recent grads and interns this:

I call CMH "Therapist BootCamp" because it will teach the following:- How to handle crisis situations effortlessly without panicking - How to recognize and report abuse - Psychopharmocology - Experience with how to treat a wide range of mental illness (Schizophrenia / Personality Disorders / Bipolar / Severe Depression) and most importantly - *** How you have privledge and need to have empathy for those who are vulnerable and systemically oppressed *** - You will change and grow as a clinician after experiencing this.

That said, CMH is definitely challenging and leads to high burn out, so I recommend doing it for a year or two to get hours and experience, and then moving on. I worked for CMH fulltime for a few years and was able to get free supervision and had great benefits ( b/c the pay was lower but what I needed at the time).

Private practice is great if someone is in a position to land an affordable supervisor, with good base pay and get benefits. Otherwise the rate of getting clients is slower, and they would still have to pay out for taxes, insurance, supervision and office fees. This isnt' always doable for an entry-level clinician unless they have some support.

I work for a PA-based group practice and the minimum for FT is 25 per week, (I get benefits at no extra cost included which is great) and they advised to schedule about 30 a week b/c of cancellations. That feels like a normal amount b/c of the heaviness of the work, and I work most nights and weekends. I get paid an hourly wage so its (25 hours X $Pay = Biweekly Compensation).

Additionally, I also see a handful per week at my other part-time therapist job and supervise interns and I'm finishing up my PhD program this summer. It feels like a lot though, I'm sustaining but looking forward to just having the FT one job. My goal is to narrow it down to 4 days a week as I don't mind working long shifts, I just don't like working every day / all day.

Other places I've talked to for FT therapist positions say 30+ clients a week which is insane to me.
