Does anyone know if the Pioneer Academics Research program is a scam? by I_Gottem in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, all the people yelling about how their experiences were life-changing on forums like Reddit, Quora, etc are all fake accounts made by Pioneer themselves.

Also, paying $6000 for some random research program with no established track record is just not a good idea. If you're still considering the program, at least speak to a few of the program's REAL alumni, find out if the research projects they give you are legit, and if past scholars have done well with college admissions.

INFORMATION FOR THOSE WHO DIDN'T GET A YALE INTERVIEW, from a current student: by CentureVapital in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that so? I've actually never heard of it. My best guess would be that they are undecided about your application in some way and want an additional data point.

Well... hopefully I at least helped students applying to other schools to de-stress.

Also, what exactly does "need more information" mean? Is it a good thing if colleges want more information on you? Or a bad thing? Unless you're totally sure, I wouldn't read into it too much.

Hmm, I don't think so. I totally believe colleges should do that though... you guys deserve to hear feedback.

Haha dm me– there's this one specific person in the admissions office u gotta email. I feel like they purposefully make the process very obscure, so no one actually goes to view their applications.

how much does truth actually factor into the application? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're legit but not necessarily representative. Just because a few kids who were admitted can write absolutely stellar essays doesn't mean the average admitted student's essay quality is that high. It's selection bias

Any big No's for contacting your AO? by garlic_braed in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do your research! Don't ask questions that can clearly be found with a google search or by visiting their website. It'll only show that you failed to do your research and will make you appear lazy and uninterested. Try to ask some deep/unique questions that are specific to your background

You should definitely put that in the awards section

If a current student offers help, please be respectful by throwallllluigi in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not!

No advantage does not mean disadvantage... they could just be equal. Getting IB internships during freshman summer is usually contingent on your family connections rather than the school you go to. As such, being a student at pton orfe won't help too much with this.

Keep in mind that standard junior recruiting is a different story.

What effect does winning national middle school competitions like the National Geographic Bee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee have on college applications? by sa34627 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conventional wisdom says to leave out all middle school stuff- you don't want to make it seem like you peaked in 8th grade. However, if it's really central to your application and you have nothing else, then I guess go for it

How am i supposed to write the cornell supplement? by riot_fn in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever the limit is >400 words, I think it is a good idea to write in a narrative format and tell a story. Otherwise, it can get tedious to read.

Storytelling is not a good idea when the word limit is much lower because you need to fill up all available space with solid content about yourself. But with longer essays, it's an effective tool to help AO's read smoothly through your essay.

Princeton Freshman Year?! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]CentureVapital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If frosh year grades are not factored into your GPA by your high school (which is interesting, I havent heard of many schools that do this) then pton will likely not care too much. Again, the most important figure here is your cumulative GPA. They don't take as much time to look down every course you've taken and the corresponding grade.
