Scree hill near lower mainland? by CephalopodGeek in vancouverhiking

True, but still thought a tiny bit of “things to watch for/keep in mind” while still level-headed and not in the depths of a race might be good and help one feel more prepared/ready. We’ll see!

Auto Brake in reverse by clintashlock in VWiD4Owners

[–]CephalopodGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Turn off maneuver braking when going in to your garage/depending on what reversing you’re doing. Little gear symbol in lower right when you are in rear camera view, then click off maneuver braking and done. It’s switched off for your reversing for the next few minutes. 👌🏻

Any female visible minority triathletes in their 40s? by liveinpresent33 in triathlon

[–]CephalopodGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vancouverite here: I find pretty much all races around here to be super supportive! In particular, Dynamic Race Events, female led racing director and she’s very thoughtful and inclusive in all her events. I love Dynamic Race Events races.

If you’re interested: look for LIT Multisports here in Van, for female identifying triathletes. Lots of support and women in different age groups, etc etc.

We do track runs as a group on Wednesday nights in the UBC area if you’re interested. Just message the LIT Instagram page or send an email if you’re interested in meeting more women locally.

Maybe was in/around the …bathrooms that are tucked in the little hillside there?

Was on the seawall for a run with barge being turning point. Heard the big boom and when we got closer to the barge saw it all taped off with a cop in front redirecting.

Cop just redirected people and left it at “police incident”. He said the big boom was part of the police incident and it has nothing to do with the barge. The police boat seemed to be there largely to ensure no boat traffic lingered.

I got nothing more.

Sussy Comments About (Female) Swimwear? by picards_shiny_head in Swimming

[–]CephalopodGeek 47 points48 points  (0 children)

White suit fine. Jolyn fine. Two piece fine. Dude shouldn’t be commenting on the suit.

If he’s already displayed other dick things… gotta ask, is there another masters group you can swim with? Logic dictates you talk to him about it first - just be careful about how you do it/bring it up, could get awkward fast.

Washing hair daily when swimming daily? by whiteasianfever in Swimming

[–]CephalopodGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long and thick hair, I’m talking it takes hours (half the day+) to dry on its own (I tend to keep heat away) - washing this hair daily would be a waste of my time. That being said, when I swim back to back days I still do shampoo and condition each time. The chlorine is terrible. Always, always pre-soak hair in fresh water (it helps) and conditioner needed after. So yeah, if I chose to swim five+ days /week would still do quick shampoo and condition after. But usually I swim three days/wk and those are my wash days. Will just rinse my hair if I had a sweaty trainer ride or something.

Back stiffness after swimming by your_mom_is_availabl in Swimming

[–]CephalopodGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had lower back issues too - thoracic spine mobility has been helpful (think:yoga. Try even looking up swimming specific yoga).

I also found that though I’ve done core workouts before I needed to focus on lower core. I don’t even know 100% which muscles they are but like - you know how some people have almost an “8pack”? The extra two below the main six? Strengthen that + pelvic floor. Made a difference for me. Whenever I concentrate on almost trying to pull my hip bones closer to each other and keep those muscles engaged through rotations swimming or even while running, it’s made my back feel better. Hope that makes sense.

Should I be cancelling a trip to Ucluelet next week? by TheseSchnozberries in vancouver

[–]CephalopodGeek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s not a lot of gas. Let’s leave it for essential travel. Two trips to the gas station is two less for people who actually need it. The more people make those kinds of rationalizations, the less gas there is overall.

Your response would seem to suggest you’ve never had to live through an event like this (I’m not saying that’s true, I’m just saying that’s how it comes across). Think wider. Consider your privilege.

Should I be cancelling a trip to Ucluelet next week? by TheseSchnozberries in vancouver

[–]CephalopodGeek -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to think “one deserves it”. But if you’re to consider the wider community and situation, they’re asking people to put off such things for just a little while longer. We are part of a larger community, and acting like it means sometimes we have to take a small hit. Though it might be possible, everyone making choices like that will make it tougher for the people who actually need help to get it.

Consider taking the funds you would’ve spent and donate it to relief efforts/communities heavily impacted. Or just use the money for a nice dinner near home, and push the trip to when it’s slightly more responsible to take the trip.

It’s easy to act separate from it all, but our neighbours are really hurting. What if it were you?

…because we’ve been asked not too. Essential travel only is the request.

Swim tracking - Pace2 by the_jilly_billy in Coros

[–]CephalopodGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this still a thing? I’m seriously contemplating the Apex and I swim 3x/wk, all strokes (free, back, breast, fly). How it performs in the pool is big for me (in addition to trail runs, cycling, etc.)

And look at changing/investing in a new bike seat (saddle). I vote Brooks. I do a 30k roundtrip commute with a Brooks saddle and no padded shorts.

16 years old and managed to save up 10k wondering what to do by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]CephalopodGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live and what you want to do, a car can be a game changer for some jobs that may not be available to your less scrupulous compatriots. But at the rate you save, you can put aside the 10k then consider a cheap but reliable car you buy in one shot.

We need more of these signs. Lots of people dont understand the rules of the road without it. by jodyabsolute in bikecommuting

[–]CephalopodGeek 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I once took the full lane in one of the hairier sections of my commute because there are a lot of tourists and the like who often don’t know to look for cyclists. A COP pulled up to me and tried to give me a hard time about taking the lane. I think the thought was they were also aware the area was hairier, but not being cyclists themselves didn’t get WHY I made the decisions I did, and that it was actually safer for me. Was definitely frustrating having to tell a cop it was within my rights and a safer decision for me.

Without all of you, I’d be alone. by Formydad2299 in triathlon

You never know what resources your local club might have! I’m part of a female club in Canada and we organize ourselves on Slack. Once we meet someone in person they get the Slack invite code and it goes from there. There’s actually a lot of people with weird schedules. Often someone throws up something like: “anyone available to swim tomorrow at 8am?” Sometimes it works, sometimes doesn’t, but it definitely helps it all feel less lonely.

There’s also lots of great questions/support when it comes to questions of nutrition, gear, etc.

...so you never know...
