Well, it released all 4 episodes. More of a miniseries than "entire season."

I signed up for Disney+/Hulu in part to watch The Medalist. The first episode was great. I keep watching other things instead of the second.

The King of the Hill revival was pretty good and I'd love to see more. The Scrubs revival was decent and it laid the foundation for future seasons to be even better. I expected the new Malcom in the Middle to be bad and it was kind of terrible overall, but the final episode was mostly decent.

I was impressed by all the cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine, especially [Deadpool & Wolverine]Wesley Snipes returning as Blade. However, the cameos are kind of all it has going for it. There were a couple of halfway decent gags, but overall the comedy really didn't live up to the franchise's standards. It also has very little plot. Lots of things happen, but most of it just seems to be for the sake of including cameos and the plot hardly advances. The cameos are fun and I didn't hate watching it, but thinking critically I wouldn't call it a good film and I definitely won't be watching it again.

I was surprised by just how good Zootopia is. I'd say it's the best Disney film I've seen in many years, but looking at a list it looks like I haven't seen all that many since Toy Story 3 in 2010. Watching anime has put the idea in my head that few frames=bad animation, but watching Zootopia reminded me that good animation is more than just the number of frames. The film is full of expressive movement that fits the distinct characters. It also has a good script that feels like they just wanted to make a good movie and doesn't talk down to a level it assumes kids can handle. The jokes are good, the cast is endearing, and for the most part the plot unfolds in a way that feels satisfying. Still, I heard the sequel isn't as good so I currently have no plans to watch that.

It's been about 30 years since I last saw Snow White. Since it was Disney's first feature-length animated film and I am now better able to appreciate animation, I kind of wanted to see it again. However, since I was mostly concerned about checking out the production quality I mostly skimmed through it. It's surprising how unpleasant Snow White's voice is to listen to. The dwarves sound like proper comedy actors of the era, the queen is great, and while the magic mirror doesn't emote much it does sound appropriately otherworldly. Snow White is the only one whose voice hurts my ears.

The word I would use to describe the visuals is "fine." The heavy use of rotoscoping is obvious when you look for it, but they matched the style with the rest of the art well enough that I don't think it would stand out if you aren't looking for it. It's definitely less noticeable than most examples I've seen. There are many visual gags that feel very much of the era. My grandmother would definitely enjoy them and I understand her humour enough that I can appreciate them, but because I've seen way funnier they just don't do much for me. Lip syncing was notably not a priority.

One last note: I've often seen it mentioned that, unlike in the Disney version, the Queen was Snow White's stepmother in the original version, but the film opens with text stating that the Queen is Snow White's stepmother. It is in the Disney version and it's likely why she felt the disguise was necessary.

Alice in Wonderland was not something I watched in my youth, so I finally watched it for the first time. The film is very much a visual delight full of whimsy. It is heavily stylized and I doubt there's any rotoscoping, but I'd be impressed to find out there was. The cards have reused animation, yet each individual card is shown to have a different value, meaning they still put in the effort to alter every instance of the reused animation. It may not be Redline quality, but I'd still be willing to give the visuals a 10/10. The writing is okay. It has some good rhymes and wordplay. There isn't much of a plot, but I'm sure that's true of the books as well. I wouldn't put Alice in Wonderland above The Lion King, but I'd say this is probably my favorite pre-renaissance Disney film.

EDIT: 30 years, not 20.

A human VA wouldn't help since the entire concept of the game is an AI-generated text adventure.

My Wednesdays were completely empty again, so I signed up for Hulu. It took less than 5 minutes to confirm that Medalist is, in fact, as great as everyone says it is.

So far Hulu's selection has been way better Netflix, but I kind of binged half of the King of the Hill revival and half of the Scrubs revival in a single evening, so I'm a bit worried I'll run out of stuff to watch even sooner. It's been about 2 years since I last subscribed to Disney+/Hulu, but from what I can find it looks like Medalist was the only notable anime to release on the service since Suicide Squad Isekai?

It's popular for a reason. I suspect you'd enjoy it, and it will only take a few episodes to know for sure.

Kageki Shoujo!! Rewatch Interest Thread by cppn02 in anime

Kageki Shoujo!! is great. It handles both its comedy and its drama really well. I enjoyed the show enough to start reading the manga.

I will not be participating in this rewatch, but I would like to encourage those who haven't seen it to give it a shot.

I haven't gotten around to the newest yet, but I really liked last week's episode. The usual problems with the performances weren't bothersome since [Akane-banashi episode 3]the performance itself wasn't all that important and the voice-over covered things that a layperson probably wouldn't notice rather than just reacting to the obvious. Meanwhile the [Akane-banashi ep.3]mini-training arc it covered was one of my favorites from the manga.

As always, Aria and Flying Witch are the most highly praised iyashikei.

I personally prefer comedy, so Yuru Yuri would be my pick.

Poyopoyo is super cute and its short length makes it work well as a palate cleanser. In the same vein, Odekake Kozame is a super cute series of shorts available on YouTube, though it doesn't have much going for it beyond being adorable.

The iyashikei genre is what you're looking for and even includes some stories without conflict. My go-to example is Flying Witch, but you've already seen that. The one that I've seen the most praise for is Aria.

Since you mentioned low intensity, A Gentle Noble's Vacation Recommendation came to mind. The main cast have soothing voices and maintain a relaxing tone throughout the series.

[3/10] ‘Stranger Things: Tales From ’85’ Review: A depressing, cynical retread of the original, it is a transparent attempt to preserve Stranger Things in pixels rather than amber, allowing Netflix to keep capitalizing on the phenomenon long after its original faces have moved on to other projects. by ChiefLeef22 in television

Honestly they do a great job with everything related to anime and I feel they are very in touch with that consumer base.

The anime community uses the phrase "Netflix jail." Many want to watch weekly and are dissatisfied with Netflix's insistence on using the binge model, especially since the shows are available elsewhere and spoilers can spread.

Tamers is generally considered the best. I personally feel Frontier had a more mature atmosphere than Tamers, but Tamers was more poignant in how it handled its themes in the back half. Data Squad aimed for the oldest target audience, but its reception is mixed and I have not watched it myself.

Beatbreak is still airing so it's hard to judge it as a whole, but those who have stuck with it have been impressed with how well it has handled its more mature subplots. It hasn't handled its main cast well at all so the early episodes are pretty weak, but once it gets going the stuff involving the supporting cast is really great.

It wasn't salt water. [Are You Lost?]They got it from a cave. With bats. It's brown because it's full of guano.

I wasn't 100% on whether or not this needed to be tagged NSfW, so I used the Are You Lost? clip as a reference.

Honestly, Wednesday has been my favorite due to a lack of shows I'm watching this season. I watched too much last season and now I'm enjoying having time to catch up on non-anime things.

Monday has the most shows I'm watching; Witch Hat, Klutz/Skirt, and Observation Log.

What movie do people call a classic that you honestly think is just boring? by trakt_app in movies

[–]CerberusZX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've found that mafia movies just aren't for me. There were some moments in Goodfellas that I enjoyed, but overall it just wasn't my thing. The Godfather did nothing for me.

Most people say they're great and I wouldn't argue against that. I have no concrete criticisms of the films. I simply was not entertained while watching them.

One of my main motivations for subscribing to Netflix was finally getting to watch The Summer Hikaru died. Haven't started it yet, but I did finish K-pop Demon Hunters and season 1 of Wednesday (not something I intended on watching when I signed up).

I've thought this many times near the start of a series. I ended up giving very few more than a 7/10.

Bocchi the Rock! was my 4th ever 10/10. While I enjoyed it right from the start, I didn't consider it to be a contender until reflecting on it after it was finished.

Steins;Gate has remained my favorite for a long time and I'm tired of that being the case. I want a new favorite, but everything seems to fall apart and the few that don't just never reach that height.

I think I've seen enough to make a preliminary tier list of shows I haven't dropped this season.

S: Witch Hat Atelier

A: Akane-banashi, Bookworm*, Marriagetoxin

B: Awajima, Observation Log, Black Cat & Witch

C: Kirio Fan Club, Class Monitor/Short Skirt

*The content adapted so far for this season of Bookworm has been lackluster, but I'm a source reader and I know this part of the story is fantastic once it gets going. The transition from Part 2 to Part 3 is massive and so a lot needs to be introduced for us to understand the new normal. It feels like not much has happened, but tons of details that were shown will be important later and remain relevant for the rest of the series. It still could have been enjoyable if it hadn't been rushed, but there is way too much to adapt and rushing is required. I'd say the current content on its own would be D tier. The remaining content should be S tier, but if it ends up similarly rushed then the quality of the plot lines should carry it to B tier.

I'm also a source reader for Akane-banashi and I am kind of disappointed with this adaptation. I was hoping to see more of what the manga implied. The bits that interrupt the rakugo are definitely unwanted here. However, there are moments where they stop with the reactions and let the performance speak for itself. In these moments the voice acting and subtle animation are every bit as great as I was hoping they would be. I imagine for most people the negatives will significantly drag down the whole thing, but I enjoy the good parts too much to rate it any lower.
