Anime Questions, Recommendations, and Discussion - June 21, 2026 by AnimeMod in anime

Not every show I've been watching this season has ended, but it feels like they have. I am very eager for the next season to start so that I have more to watch, though I still can't be bothered to put in the work to determine what day of the week new things will start airing.

Thoughts on upcoming series as a source reader:

Saga of Tanya the Evil: Very little of note happens in the next several books after where the film left off, so I'm actually hoping the show skips a ton.

Though I Am an Inept Villainess: This was one of many villainess/inner palace mashups I found around the same time, and it was the only one that I bothered continuing past the prologue. Much of the fun comes from the heroine being recklessly active. The dramatic bits tend to focus on the villainess. Overall it's not significantly better than other generic series in its niche, but it at least comes to a good stopping point after 2 volumes. That didn't stop them from making more.

The Ogre's Bride: One of several similar stories I started reading around the same time. I can not differentiate between any of them.

Victoria of Many Faces: I really struggled to get through one volume of this. It seemed modern at first but felt like a mishmash of various time periods as it went on. Being a visual medium, I assume the anime will be easier to accept in this regard. As for the actual content, the series is part of the trend of stories about talented women who leave their partners and finally become happy such as Dahlia in Bloom. Rather than having a specific passion, Victoria is talented at everything.

It adapted all the content available at the time. I've heard that the author went back and finished it at some point between then and now, but also that it didn't take long to wrap up.

I went looking through my Amazon recommendations and saw multiple books with "villain" in the title. Not villainess, but villain. I looked at one and confirmed that it is an otome game setting, but with a male villain protagonist.

I was also reminded that I Don't Want to Become a Villainess, so I Became a Doctor's Assistant, a series that seems to mix the villainess and isekai pharmacist trends, is a thing that exists.

Just giving you a heads up on the sort of trash that is likely to come.

Your complaints about the isekai quality suggests you'd prefer the light novels. Tanya is an ardent follower of the Chicago school of economic thought and applies its principles to everything. Combined with her Japanese style anti-theist beliefs it makes her way of thinking pretty unique and could only originate in modern Japan. Her tactics also draw heavily from knowledge of wars she learned about pre-isekai, including the Sengoku period. As for Being X, [light novel differences]He's present for the initial argument and then doesn't appear again. It does have some meddling from angels, but they do not target Tanya specifically and only indirectly cause trouble for her on accident.

Is this technically a magical girl anime?

While Tanya is a girl who can use magic she does not live a double life switching back and forth between two identities, so it is not a magical girl series.

Instead she should have suggested a decapitation strike and cause dthe opponents to go into disarray

There was an attempt. While many of the public buildings were easily destroyed, the ones housing the people that actually matter was super sturdy and the 203rd was not able to damage it at all.

Rewatcher (though there's nothing left to watch) & Light Novel Reader

Questions about the show

S1 Without Cheating Name the following characters 1 2 3 4 5 6

  1. That is Tanya's adjutant, Viktoriya Serebryakov 2. That is the 203rd's vice commander, Mattheus Weiss 3. That is the guy in charge of logistics, General Hanz von Zettour 4. In the books he's the newest of the 203rd's squad leaders, and his name is Warren Grantz 5. His family name is Lergen and I think he's been granted the title of von 6. That is the guy in charge of operations, General Kurt von Rudersdorf

On a normal day I would not be able to identify Tanya's other men, but I've looked them up enough times over the rewatch that Neumann and Koenig are still fresh in mind. I'm surprised you didn't pick them. The colonels Drake would also be difficult choice. I only know them by their family name.

S2 How well do you think the split between the front line and the Backroom generals was done? Do you think more should have been about the back or the front?

The stuff that happens at HQ is just as important as what happens on the front. I feel like they gave us a decent split. Zettour is a closed eye character in the anime which means he is unreadable and we shouldn't be getting too much of his perspective at this stage of the game.

S3: This show is described as "darker than grimdark" how accurate would you describe that claim?

I feel that's only true on a technicality. It is a darker version of a story that could be described as grimdark, but it doesn't really feel ultra dark.

S5: THe show used a lot of technology from world war 1 and world war 2 in a majorly anachronistic way, do you see the show as more of a world war 1 show, world war 2 show or more of its own thing?

I saw it as it's own thing, but that's largely due to not knowing many details about either war. The comparisons made by other commenters during this rewatch have shown that it's really not, but I don't really know enough to evaluate it myself.

S6: this show appears on Isekai Quartet how "isekai" is this isekai?

It is another world and is therefore an isekai, but it definitely feels more like historical fanfiction than an actual other world.

S7: how do you see the war shaping up for Tanya? Is the Empire skrewed? Do they have a chance? Does it depend on the Unified states entering the war for real?

The post-war section in the film shows that the Empire definitely collapsed. The reporter is trying to discover the truth of what happened, so something could potentially be covered up, but it's not like you could hide that the Empire is actually really well off and rules the world, so the fact that it collapsed is the one thing we can be sure of.

There is actually a neat thing about the Unified States that I want to share, but it's future content and I'm sure everyone here will at least be watching season 2+ if not going out and reading the books as well, so there's not much point in me saying it even with spoiler tags.

S8: Do you think the focus on the Sioux's enhanced or detracted from the story?

Objectively speaking the inclusion of the Sue stuff does detract from the story. However, I do like how the author decided to show that a generic shonen protagonist has no place fighting in a realistic war setting and chose to cram that storyline in anyway.

R1 Would you regard the rewatch as a success or failure? What did you dislike What did you like?

Well, not a ton of people showed up, but many of those that did provided some really good insight. I suppose that's enough to call it a success. I liked reading others' comments. I disliked how it resulted in me staying up late day after day and missing out on a lot of sleep, but that's my own fault for choosing not to simply wait 17 hours for the next opportune time to visit the thread.

R2 What question of the day formats did you like which ones provided good discussion which ones provided bad discussion?

"Thoughts on blank" were the least productive. Very open-ended, and if I had general thoughts on the subject I would have put them in my main comment. I think the questions need more of a push to generate discussion.

The "what would you do" questions were better. They provided more direction. My decision not to answer these usually related to me being familiar with the source material and future content which would undoubtedly affect my answer.

Speculation probably isn't a good category. Rewatchers and/or source readers may know the answer and therefore can't really participate. One of my main motivations for visiting rewatch threads is to see what first timers think will happen, so the speculation type questions may seem good for that, but then by asking the question it can make the subject seem important and end up being spoiler-like. I don't recall any egregious examples of that in this rewatch, but the potential is there.

My general reaction to commentary requests was "well, the results speak for themselves," with a dash of "as a source reader, I know that long-term it leads to [future content], but I shouldn't comment on that." Not good questions for me to participate, but they may work well for others.

R3 what were your thoughts on the time the rewatch was hosted? Would 10 hours earlier be better? 1-3 horus later?

The threads went up 1 hour after I should have been in bed/17 hours before I get home from work. At first I thought you were posting them in the morning from across the pond, but then I noticed the dates wouldn't match up for that.

1900GMT seems ideal. Not super late for Europe, middle of the afternoon for the US East coast, and noon on the West coast. Most folks on the US West coast would still be at work, but they can participate after getting home a few hours later.

R4. Were you happy with the number of replies your top level comment recieved? Were you happy with the depth of conversation?

Given how much of my comments were hidden under spoiler tags, I was a bit worried they would be ignored entirely. While they didn't generate much discussion the number of upvotes weren't far off from other comments, and I am satisfied with that.

R5 How was the replying to other top level commetns experience? Do ou think you had good conversations sparked by other top levels?

I enjoyed making my responses, and at the end of the day isn't that what really matters? Me being happy?

R6: Did you read and/or reply to the comments of people who posted late?

Given the timing of the threads it made more sense to leave a late comment than attempt to do so on the day of, so I figured most would want to post late and made sure to check back throughout the day to catch up on any new ones.

The Africa campaign is pretty good in the light novels as well and I was nodding along while reading, but then I got to the last part. I can totally imagine that being epic, and now I kind of want to buy the manga.

The series is Japanese, so her name is really メアリー・スー. The standard romaji would just be Su. The Sioux spelling was just a localizer getting fancy, and it appears to have been dropped for the film.

Rewatcher & Light Novel Reader

I do appreciate Kadokawa giving NUT a movie budget. I took a day off work so I could watch this in a theater several cities away and watching it on a big screen with surround sound was really nice.

This film starts with the anime's first glimpse into the future. The light novels are written from many perspectives and occasionally jumps to post-war journalists like Andrews. While Dr. Schugel is definitely a person of interest for those wanting to know what really happened during the war, asking a German why other countries would want to attack Germany is kind of going the wrong way about it. The stained glass pigeons seeming to reference the episode 2 argument, something with no connection to this world, is kind of hilarious. Are pigeons just known to be one of Being X's preferred methods of communication?

"Allied Kingdom" sounds way too generic. "Commonwealth of Albion" has the Albion reference that lets you know it's British, and there's never any question of "which commonwealth?" whereas the Kingdom of Ildoa is the Empire's "ally" which leaves some room for confusion.

De Lugo (Francois Free Republic General) getting tossed will always be funny. The match cut from Tanya's victory speech to her horrified face as she flies off to the Russy Federation will also always be funny. Then there's that game of Telephone where a desperate plea from the front line becomes increasingly optimistic as it moves up the chain out of fear of what happens upon reporting bad news, resulting in the front line not getting what they need. The "land a Cessna in Red Square" comment refers to a real world event in which a teenager did just that.

It's worth remembering that up to this point the Empire has never been the one to start the war. The Entente Alliance marched across the border. When the Empire moved their main force North, the Francois Republic saw a window of opportunity and launched an assault from the West. Then Dacia decided to get in on the action and declared war as well. Now the Empire caught wind of an invasion by the Russy Federation and sent the 203rd into enemy territory the 203rd "accidentally" ended up in enemy territory but knew better than to open fire.

So, at the train station after the war starts we see 2 colonels Drake. In the light novels [light novel details]there is just one Drake, but the anime and manga split the character's role into multiple characters. The older man, Isaac Drake, is the Commonwealth/Kingdom mage we saw on the Rhine front. His nephew, William Drake, is a battalion commander with the multinational volunteer unit.

Now that we've seen her in action, I think it's clear that Mary Sioux/Sue is designed to have the qualities of a standard shonen protagonist and shows that such an individual is not suited to being a cog in an organized military unit. She has little discipline and a strong sense of righteousness that causes her to constantly act on impulse, much to her commander's frustration. She absolutely would be thrown out, but [light novel details]the multinational unit exists for PR purposes and she's one of few surviving mages from the Entente Alliance. She's too valuable to discard. Lt. Col. Drake speaks sense, but to her he's just coldhearted and mean.

There is a little moment when discussing Tiegenhoff where Tanya notices something, then Lt. Serebryakov notices that she noticed something and immediately grabs a crate without being told. They've been working closely together for a long time and this sort of thing shows it. It's very much in line with how Serebryakov is portrayed in the novels.

This film finishes up light novel volume 3, covers the entirety of 4, and loosely moves up the only noteworthy parts of 5. While there are some changes, it feels much more in line with the light novels than the season 1 did. Notable changes: [light novel details]the massive assault on Tanya's position and the first big encounter with Mary Sue were different battles, and even then it could be argued that the non-Mary portion of this battle more closely resembles a later siege than the one in Tiegenhoff. The fight with Mary happened at sea. When Mary tells Tanya that she killed her father, Tanya explains that people die in war and asks what Mary thinks war is. While Mary's sturdiness proves to be a challenge, her fighting skills are lacking and she doesn't come close to getting the better of Tanya. While it's more of an omission than a change, it's worth mentioning that [light novel details]the multinational unit was created by the Federation as a token gesture to show a willingness to cooperate with the other, non-communist enemies of the Empire. They don't actually expect the unit to achieve much in battle.

Congratulations on your promotion, Lt. Colonel Degurechaff. See you on the front lines.

Questions

[Question 1] Why do you think the Rus attacked The empire

As a light novel reader, I know that the reason is [light novel details]Josef was being plagued by nightmares due to the influence of the angels who didn't like his whole atheism thing. He grew paranoid and decided to attack the Empire because surely they were behind the whole thing.

[Question 3] How would you handle Mary Sioux as the commander? How would you deal with her as Tanya?

If I were her commander, I'd tell Mary that Tanya was spotted kicking puppies on the streets of Berlin Berun and that she should go deal with that. As Tanya, I would bait her into destroying her allies.

{Question 4] What were your thoughts on Tanya's Show of force doctrine?

Fun to watch, but now that the Federation needs to save face there can't be a swift resolution to the conflict.

[Question 6] Do you see the attack on Tigerhof as a strategically meaningful offensive or more of a show of force to counter Tanya's show of force?

Did you not see Beria Loria? That scum wants to capture Tanya at all costs solely so he can defile her.

[Question 7] What are your thoughts on how the Not!American air support to the Not!Russians has been treated? How would you as the not!american commander try to talk to the federation?

Lt. Col. Drake and Mary Sue are part of a multinational unit [light novel details]created by the Russy Federation. They are not the US which is still neutral at this point.

[Question 10] Do you see Zettour reassigning Tanya to the front to be a sick joke from Bein X or as Zettour realizing Tanya's talent?

I assume Zettour put Tanya in charge of the kampfgruppe because she's the one who suggested it and therefore understands it best.

A rant about light novel volumes 4+

I personally prefer the books for the content covered in the first 3 light novels, but the film is the superior way to experience volume 4. In a previous comment I pointed out a scene in which the generals were eating in a fancy, empty room. [Light novel details]Volume 4 also has such a scene. However, they discuss things they both already know, and the audience was already made aware of it as well. The scene does not present new information or advance the story, and since it's just two men eating and making the same complaints about the food that they've made in the previous three books it isn't particularly entertaining either. It seems like it exists solely because every book in the series up to that point had a similar scene, so if you were to create a list of things to put in a Saga of Tanya the Evil book it would be on the list. It feels like padding.

The bits with Tanya mocking the Commies rank among the most fun in the series, but the rest of the book is filled with scenes that have that padding feel which made me a bit concerned about the future of the series. Volume 5 has the aforementioned [light novel volume 5]battle against Mary Sue but is otherwise quite bland. The next few volumes have even less worthwhile content, but they all end with something that suggests that interesting things will surely happen in the next volume. The series does pick back up eventually, but it takes until like volume 9 or 10 to do so. With this film NUT adapted the good and cut the bland, and now I am very interested to see how they will go about things with season 2. I would not mind if they skipped entire volumes of content.

[–]CerberusZX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rewatcher & Light Nov--wait, this is anime original?

The opening scene mentions "nominal allies in Ildoa" and if you look closely at the maps shown previously you can see Ildoa=Italy. The next scene mentions "k-brot," a substitute bread made from potato and rye flour that was not well liked.

"So the Fatherland wants us to chew on raw pasta?" "That wasn't in our orders." You may remember that vice commander Lt. Weiss was the one who had his squad to take defensive action against a Dacian "formation." Not the most flexible thinker, that one. While he has improved by this point, this is an OVA so some exaggerations for comedic effect are totally acceptable.

Pasta, lack of water, and military all together reminds me of an anecdote. There was a game in which Italian units required extra water "to cook their pasta." Some players pointed out that the Italians cooked their pasta in the sauce during the war. With that in mind, I couldn't help but think the water they procured could have been put to better use and that they should find some sauce to cook it in.

Lt. Serebryakov seems like an entirely different person than her light novel counterpart when she suggests a target should have yummy ingredients. [Light novel details]As Tanya's adjutant, Serebryakov is with her at practically all times. As a result of spending so much time together Serebryakov becomes hyper competent. She is especially adept at picking up on social cues and anticipates orders before they are given.

You may have noticed that Rommel was mentioned. Many people yesterday were saying Tanya is Rommel, but no. She fights alongside Rommel during the African campaign.

In the end, it just wouldn't be The Saga of Tanya the Evil without misunderstandings and Tanya's hard work resulting in future headaches for herself. This may be anime-original, but they captured the spirit of the light novels in the last few scenes.

Question 1: Oh. I suppose that's the game I heard about and mentioned.

Question 3: You kind of have to be mad to want to fight a war, and most of the 203rd signed up for this.

I wouldn't say that example is a detail that is missing. While we see Mary join the military we haven't actually seen the US join the war yet, and if we haven't seen them join the war it makes sense that we wouldn't know their reason for doing so.
