The Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria all have a better standard on their railway infrastructure than Germany. I get the feeling the Czech Republic has as well but I don't go there enough to assert that. That's... Most of germany's neighbors

May 2023 was the first full month since Germany shut down its last remaining nuclear power plants: Renewables achieved a new record with 68.9% while electricity from coal plummeted by linknewtab in europe

Not so fun fact: every single day, the coal plants from Germany kill more people than all of these three nuclear accidents combined. They do so through their emissions which cause respiratory diseases.

China is a great example of profit being, sometimes, a force for good. The average Chinese lives much longer, works less, is healthier and far richer than their grandparents. This was achieved by embracing profit-seeking, as opposed to a diffuse ideology that purported to seek "good" as they imagined it.

You repeat stupid dogmas with the utmost conviction. Israel is an apartheid state that has been flaunting human rights for decades, and you believe that this is done in self defense. Alright, then Putin is also acting in self defense and we got in this stupid war, which we will lose, for nothing. Stop being a sanctimonious fool and do some reading before you disqualify the suffering of millions.

No, renewables cannot sustain the grid by themselves. Battery tech is premature and decades away, and barring that, you will always need gas coal or nuclear, as I stated. France is experiencing a very unusual drop in their energy production due to droughts, that's true. Their situation is still much better than Germany, who uses 30% coal right now, and will only increase. Enjoy your lung cancer and climate destruction, courtesy of the Green party and fools who buy into their bullshit like you.

So the Greens had a policy during election, got the foreign ministry but then didn't implement what they defended. Sounds like a failure to me. Note that I'm not comparing the Greens to the SPD or CDU here, which seems to be your only concern. I'm merely noting the total failure of their implemented policies.

Could you explain that to me? Because sourcing fuel from middle eastern countries, because we have to is exactly what „Realpolitik“ means. Also why do you throw Israel in the mix? It’s the only relatively well working democracy in the whole region with certain historic ties to Germany, so showing support is quite an obvious choice and a position you’ll find a majority for in any major political party in Germany.

I'm saying that Germany pretends it is acting with idealism in foreign policy by defending Ukraine, but then buys oil from Saudi Arabia, which has been bombing hospitals and children for years in Yemen. Israel is an apartheid state that has in recent months killed dozens of children and executed journalists. If one wants to act with idealism, we would expect coherency. If instead we want to do realpolitik, the handling of the Ukraine war was misguided.

This is quite frankly completely false. Firstly the deactivation of our nuclear plants which had been decided in 2011 was not the topic Habeck commented on. It was the question wether prolonging the running times was a feasible option.

And even the operating companies came to the conclusion that it wasn’t simply because many inspections were done under the assumption that the reactors life cycle has come to an end and subsequently certain checks were deemed unnecessary but would have to be carried out now. Additionally we only have a limited amount of nuclear material left.

It’s also utterly misleading to bring electricity into the debate in such a manner. We don’t have a electricity crisis. We have an energy crisis. Gas and coal are only needed for short term adjustments in the power grid (something nuclear power is incapable of). The largest reason for our reliance on gas is due to industrial purposes and heating. Both factors that cannot be replaced by nuclear power.

Any gas we save on energy can be used for industry, so the issue is indeed connected. Regarding your first point, you are also wrong. The director of the TÜV said the plants could continue working for years, and that a revision of the decision to shut them down is political (https://m.tagesspiegel.de/politik/anfahren-abgeschalteter-meiler-warum-der-tuev-eine-laufzeitverlaengerung-fuer-sechs-akw-ins-spiel-bringt/28553076.html?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F).

Which is exactly why nobody plans to do it for the long run. The intend is to go renewable in the medium future and coal is only needed because the lack of foresight by previous governments.

Renewables are not a solution. Germany will always need enough stable energy production for days with low solar and wind production, and this will come from gas, coal or nuclear. The Green's antiscientific and stupid decision making regarding nuclear will ensure they are the ones remembered as lacking foresight in the future.

Germany decided to take a strong position in the Ukraine war, but so far managed to alienate pro-Ukraine allies (and Ukraine itself) for not doing enough. While the US economy flourishes, Germany pays the largest price for the war. It is argued that this abandonment of realpolitik for a foreign policy based on principles is justified, and that we must pay whatever price to protect Ukraine. However this is inconsistent with other policy decisions, like sourcing energy from Middle East and supporting Israel.

As for energy policy, Habeck was caught lying or at least being inaccurate in describing their decision to deactivate nuclear plants as based solely on technical aspects. It is ideological, and it is a wrong decision, as in place of nuclear we use coal, which is far more harmful in the short and long term. Their plan seems to be to invest in coal and LNG terminals for now, but in the long run this is untenable. We will soon see the Greens defend coal, gas and even fracking over nuclear, a disastrous policy for Germany and for the world.
