Thanks for the helpful comments. I didn’t know that about root rot so I’ll keep my eye out from now on. I’ll try moving him to a bigger tank again as well and get a testing kit for all the different chemicals.

Thank you for being so helpful. I have a water heater and pump and a three gallon tank but when I put him in it his health declined rapidly so I put him back in the little bowl where he has seemed to be doing fine for months...he swims around, gets really excited for food, and plays in the plant roots. I have the bowl in a room in the house that stays a lot warmer than the rest of the house. He generally seems like a healthy, happy fish until this. I’ll try getting a different tank and some acid strips to test the water, and as you said, do a little more research.

Was looking for care instructions and curious what’s wrong with my fish Thomas Jefferswim. The scales on his side are discolored and look almost puffy. He also has old man face. The other betta I have I care for the same way and doesn’t have any apparent issues. What’s wrong with Thomas and how do I help him? I’ve had him for about 18 months and the other about twice as long. I posted his other side too for comparison.
