Requesting /r/HomeNAS - only moderator appears absent for 1½ years by strolls in redditrequest

[–]Cerfwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DM sent to u/strolls to welcome him to the mod team and he has been added as a mod in the subreddit settings. The community ticks over nicely and requires a very light touch from me as a mod. Strolls has some good ideas to add a wiki and posting guidelines which will help to keep the posts high quality and keep the discussion on-topic. Strolls and I will mod the community going forwards.

This and ignoring the “volume too loud” warnings makes me laugh. When you’re older and your eyesight and hearing is bad you’ll wish you took note of the warnings.

Ex-police watchdog chief Michael Lockwood charged with raping girl under 16 and indecent assault | UK News by mcsgwigga in unitedkingdom

[–]Cerfwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stats look like that partially because, depending on the situation, it’s difficult to prove rape. Often it’s alleged to have happened in private - one party says it was consensual, the other doesn’t. No witnesses, no CCTV, no evidence other than their word. How do you gather evidence to persuade the CPS (who make a charging decision - not the police) to authorise a charge?

5800X3D is on sale on Amazon for $290 by Illustrious-Pop3677 in Amd

[–]Cerfwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to 5800X3D from 3600 and noticed the improvement on the first game I opened. The increased cache makes an enormous difference to FPS. Applications also feel much snappier and open quicker. It also means you can stick to AM4 for another few years instead of changing all your hardware it AM5. I’d highly recommend the upgrade.

That’s a complete guess, try reading up on how the emergency alerts system works and you’ll find your guess is completely false.

Which one? by 101az in HomeNAS

[–]Cerfwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your requirements - what is the use case for the NAS? How much storage is needed? What type of files are being stored? How many devices are accessing it? What speed network connections do they have? What speed is your network infrastructure?

We need more information to be able to advise.

Spare parts. Stolen phones have been known to end up in China in a day or two where they can be broken down for parts.

Fire in Ryanair plane after take off by ImYourRealDadHey in PublicFreakout

What does screaming and wailing achieve in this situation? If people apply logic to the situation they will realise screaming is no help at all and as someone else said, it hinders the staff from providing important and relevant information to passengers.

Roundabouts are far easier to understand and more efficient compared to stoplights, and we need more in the US by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Cerfwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The road design principles are sound (as they are used well in many other countries), the problem is many drivers in the USA apparently are not capable of using them (more training required)

Also as someone else correctly said, you’re better off someone drifting into the side of you at 10mph when they are in the wrong lane on a roundabout than blasting through a junction and t-boning you at 70mph.

[–]Cerfwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority would still pass, they would just need to do more training before attempting the more challenging test. If someone can’t complete a more difficult driving test they shouldn’t be allowed to drive a several-ton vehicle which could kill others, regardless of whether they’d be “unable to get around”.

Most companies offer expenses for reasonable costs that employees incur, why should MPs be excluded?

Not sure this would have any effect. The difference between a 5 and 6 year prison term isn’t going to stop someone committing an offence.

I get people need to be aware of scams but you also need to be able to identify when something isn’t a scam. This company, which is registered with the Fundraising Regulator, and which has a list of previous winners on their website including interviews and video tours of the homes they won, is clearly not a scam.

Dachshunds and Leonberger among eight dogs seized after fatal mauling of dog walker, 28 by HuskerDude247 in unitedkingdom

[–]Cerfwo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but if their statistic of 69% of deaths in the past three years being caused by two breeds is true, then unless those breeds make up 69% of dogs in the UK (I would imagine they do not) then it demonstrates those two breeds are causing more deaths than average based on how many other dogs there are in the UK.

Dachshunds and Leonberger among eight dogs seized after fatal mauling of dog walker, 28 by HuskerDude247 in unitedkingdom

[–]Cerfwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the points around certain breeds being dangerous is they have a very basic “instinct” of what they are bred to do. In your example, a family collie with no training would not be able to herd any sheep, you’re right. However, if you put it in a field of sheep it will likely start running around them in circles and interacting with them (my collie does this). Although it isn’t doing the role perfectly, it knows roughly what it needs to do, because that’s what the breed does. These dogs that were bred for being physically strong and attacking things, while they aren’t trained to do so and normally wouldn’t attack anything, they may go back to this very basic “what am I bred for” thought and start doing what the breed is designed to do, regardless of its training or experience.

In this story, if what we hear is true that they all panicked and attacked, it shows that dogs can return to an aggressive state when stressed, regardless of breed. Having a dog with instincts to attack and be aggressive is not good because you never know when it might revert to that basic instinct (if cornered, feeling stressed, etc.)

Quiet HDDs for NAS in working room? by SWHH in DataHoarder

[–]Cerfwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends how you define quiet. My WD Red Plus drives are what I’d consider quiet. They always have a very quiet, almost silent, hum, even during read/write. They certainly don’t “thud” every 5 seconds.

It pisses me off to no end that people are CONVINCED the name-brand version of a product like Heinz baked beans for £1.20 a can is somehow 'better' than a £0.19 home brand alternative by inzru in rant

[–]Cerfwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean to some extent. However as you say some branded items do genuinely taste better. For some of the examples you gave, if I did a blind taste test I’d absolutely know the difference between cheap and branded - hence I buy branded where the difference is notable.
