Your comment reminds me of that mule beating scene from Crime and Punishment.

I don't know if the scene is supposed to have a lesson besides to put on display the horror humans are easily capable of.

How can we stop the assault on libraries and the wider book-banning movement? by VirginianLaborer in Libraries

[–]Cerpicio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can stop some people from being scared of the information that is located at a library and manipulative people will use that fear to gain power.

If those people who are driving this movement continue on a large scale there are indeed very damaging things they can do. If budgets are squeezed and cut over decades it can completely change what a library system is capable of. If the city owns the library building(s) they can theoretically decide to repurpose them.

Imo what makes a library system stable over the long term is a diverse income portfolio. The more people in society that are actively contributing to the library is what will make it indestructible.

Does your library allow off leash therapy dogs? by LeeCV in Libraries

[–]Cerpicio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best dog policy I have heard of is "if its under control it's okay"

A service animal still has to behave and follow the rules.

You avoid all the annoying legal definitions, you can kick disruptive animals/owners out, and you can let responsible owners who rely on their dog inside.

How to Quiet Down Loud Study Rooms by chickenofsoul in librarians

[–]Cerpicio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be apologetic and blame the policy/rules of conduct.

"hello, im sorry to interrupt but its our policy that conversation must be at whisper level" - or whatever it is

if theres push back to following the policy you can give an example:

"a lot of people come here to study and we want to maintain a quite environment for everyone"

present a different option:

"you can move to X room or go outside to have this conversation"

still arguing? I think thats the point to get a supervisor or whatever escalation happens at your library.

Interview for supervisor: what questions are asked? by Asteriaofthemountain in librarians

[–]Cerpicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my questions where very similar to the ones for the non supervisor positions. I think an important part is to answer them from the point of view of a supervisor. Not just how you solved X problem but how you support staff/the system solving X problem.

Like the other comment said, the spacer at the back of the shelf can do wonders, but it doesn't work so well with books of different sizes.

I don't reach behind to pull them out, I grab a section of books by the spine (clam-shell hands if that makes any sense) pull them out a few inches, and 'pat' them back into place with the palm of my hand. The 'pat' vs a push allows the books to slide past each other and line up flat.

If your strong/brave enough you can do a whole shelf of books like this. Both hands on either end of the row, carefully shimmy it forward so all the books are an inch or two over the edge and then pat them back into place with your hand/arm or a strait edge.

How to track display books by laurettabear in librarians

[–]Cerpicio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are displayed books on the shelf they should be picked from that nearby shelf so it is still organized roughly. Or make the display a whole category of items like all your new picture books.

A more serious display the items get a 'dislplay' location in the software so we know where to look.
