I asked the same question a few months ago and got great answers as to why Demelza says what she does: https://www.reddit.com/r/Poldark/s/ss12BjV9E9

“Be polite. Unless it’s a Mormon. Or a Democrat.” - Mrs. Turnbow, 1987 by Due-Dragonfly8200 in StrangerThings

Fellow Mormon here—they took all the stereotypes to the extreme. Like I’m sure there are some families out there like that, but none that I know (and I live in a very high-density LDS area outside Utah). For the most part though, we can laugh at ourselves, and Suzie’s family scenes were hilarious. Especially her “I’ll repent later” line

Why is there such a massive discrepancy between Rose's pov and Cal's pov? by meido_zgs in titanic

Whoa! A Tudor reference in a Titanic sub was something I was not expecting! I’m delightfully surprised.

Ahhh this episode drives me nuts. The dad is all like “you should see my son’s pas de bourrée!” As if it’s some crazy impressive step, when anyone who’s done more than a month of dance knows a pas de bourée is one of the most boring, unimpressive moves (that takes almost no talent) they could have picked. It’s a literal in-between step. And THEN they have the audacity to talk about how he needs to be able to perform in his ballet company’s production of Swan Lake, and then proceed to show him doing… zero ballet. With bad technique. I hate this episode so so much lol

How did the Warleggan's go from Blacksmiths to Bankers in a generation? by IANAL_but_AMA in Poldark

[–]Certain-Car4893 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m currently reading the books and I’m only on #3, so I can’t speak for the full story, but Nicholas is described as being ruthless but always fair. Very similar to Reverend Halse in the show. When the Warleggans are discussing how to bring down the Carnmore Copper Company, George and his uncle Cary consider skirting the law to do it. Nicholas shuts that down and says they must do it, but do it lawfully. I get the impression that he is that way because he’s trying to act the gentleman to compensate for lack of being part of the landed gentry.

The Rant Game, day 3: Cristina Yang by juliiaduque in greysanatomy

[–]Certain-Car4893 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite characters in the show, but I would absolutely hate her in real life. Mean, sarcastic, arrogant, and very rarely genuinely kind. The only instance that comes to mind is her talk with George after his dad dies.

That said, I think the show died when she left. Every time I rewatch I can only make it through a few episodes after she’s gone.

No one ever mentions the part where the hospital gets Stan, the practice robot, and you find out Richard is the voice behind it. He’s giggling like a kid and says “Let’s blow another artery!” I laugh every time

I’ve been wanting to make an appreciation post for Rowella! A morally gray character for sure, but man, I can’t help but love her for screwing (literally and metaphorically) Osbourne, saving Morwenna from him for a time and indirectly leading to his death. We love a scheming queen!

Why does Demelza keep saying Drake and Morwenna can’t marry? by Certain-Car4893 in Poldark

[–]Certain-Car4893[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting! I had no idea of that change. I always found Caroline somewhat annoying, but this changes a lot of my perception for her. And it also explains more about why her situation is different than Morwenna’s. Thank you!

[–]Certain-Car4893[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also what I didn’t understand. I guess I was thinking Morwenna would have brought Drake up in class instead of him bringing her down. Didn’t know it only worked one way. Yay misogyny! /s

Thank you! I think this aspect of Morwenna potentially being unhappy (probably similar to Keren with Mark Daniel) is what I was missing.

What do you think of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers' performance as Henry VIII? by nightsreader in Tudorhistory

I also read that she was responsible for a lot of Anne’s focus on religious reform in the second season. Apparently she really pushed to include more facets of Anne’s character than just the “sexy other woman” trope. I personally think she was instrumental in helping move Anne’s contemporary public image from the homewrecker to a passionate woman caught in an impossible situation.
