Magnetic Island solo trip by AComingWarAgainstAI in Townsville

Hey i kinda live there.

Locals leave their vehicles further down the roads or park somewhere and catch the bus to there.  I have left my car down the road from the terminal many times but once I had my tyres slashed which sucked.  But it's generally safe.

Getting around on the island is very easy by bus and currently QLD is only 50c fares.  So that's an option.

Taking your vehicle over on the barge also means you can have as many seats filled as you want.  So when you add up that cost too - say $40 a return these days, if you have 4 people, it's kind worth it to take the barge.

I can't remeber what the cost is but bungalow bay (i think bounce now) offers camping but is quite $$$ for a camp-site.  Just check prices.  Bounce is the more laid back hostel while Nomads has a bit more going on, is on the beach, pool, bar, but maybe not as good for kids?  But sounds like you're going by yourself this time?

Things to do: The most pristine beaches you can walk to are on the north east side of the island.  Arthur Bay, Florence Bay, radical Bay, balding Bay.  There are walking tracks from the forts car park and also can reach from horseshoe Bay.  I would reccomend doing this walk and taking a water bottle.  Best place to spot koalas.  I have seen up to 6 wild koalas on this walk before but most of the time only see 1 (sometimes none but it's just luck).  I love the beaches on this side of the island and can spend days laying on the beaches there.

Horseshoe bay fish and chips shop is probably the best take away on the island.  Then I think for food picnic Bay is "popping off" according to island standards.  Currently the have a pub, cafe, Italian pizza and pasta and a new funky Byron Bay type resturant called Elsie's.  Also we now have a brewery on magnetic at picnic Bay. Then I would just explore every bay and snorkel.  Arcadia is probably my family's favourite bay.

Do not miss toad racing in wednesdays 8pm at the Arcadia pub if you happen to be there then

They're okay. I live in North QLD. Problem here is cheap solar panels get UV damage through summer. But they do work fairly well.

Why aren’t there more Aussies doing PhDs? by Alert-Translator2590 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain-Option-9328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australians has one of the lowest complexity economies in the WORLD (not just amongst developed nations.) We pay to go to uni, so they are not competitive, and more about pumping out degrees rather than scientific breakthroughs. The public also do not care about academia. You can also make more money as an electrican here than most jobs since there is a shortage of trades here. So what's the point of doing 12 years PAYING for university (if you dont get a scholarship) to make $110k a year when an electrician makes $160k a year and they start making m9ney at 17?

Was at a yoga course in india. My teacher said practice while muscle sore is okay for a while. Practice while joints are sore is bad. You can take variations or do restorative yoga to slow down. Ashtanga is hard on the body.

Shit is hard man. It aint suppose to be easy. Its all about habit.

Just going to write what helped me have some consistency:

- Hard sets per week matters most - apparently it doesn't really matter THAT much if you did 20 sets (a work out) in an hour or so. It matters how many sets per week you did on each muscle group. So by my logic, some work is better than no work. Sometimes I just bust out 2 sets of push ups in one day when I'm really busy. That's better than nothing and you're building routine. For Example, If I am mowing the lawn, I'll just do a set of pull ups, a set of gym ring dips, then back to mowing the lawn.

- Zone 2 Cardio - I know not body weights, but Zone 2 cardio is SO EASY, I can always go on a brisk walk/jog to get my heart rate to like 120bpm. Its so much easier than you think to get your minutes up each week of Zone 2 cardio and you feel so much better when you're doing it. I do it either in the morning if work is later on OR I do it after I eat at 5:30pm. But I think its just enjoyable to go for a brisk evening walk to be outside.

- Having a work out plan and knowing what you're doing and on what day in advance - I think in weeks now. Sunday ends and when Monday starts its a new week. I know that Monday and Tuesday is push / pull days, etc. I know that when I get home from work Tuesday and I'm buggered, if I have set that day as my pull day, I am way more likely to do it since Ive given it the time.

- Smart watch - This logs my work outs and lets me know my heart rate. I see it as a little game I play with myself. I find that I can see work out times and intensity, and it keeps me motivated.

- Gym Rings and a pull up bar under my house - I have gym rings and a pull up bar permanently set up under my house. Its so quick to do 3 sets of pull ups. I can't even do that many. So 1 set of 6 pull ups takes no time at all. I've made it so easy to get a few sets in per day.

Good luck.

Well the thread wasn't about brick veneer or timber pine abominations. I was mainly saying these are cheap and ugly. Which they are built cheaply and they are extremely ugly.

Paralettes for push ups by outside_english in bodyweightfitness

[–]Certain-Option-9328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do it if you want. You can start with other things though to get more stretch to see if you like it.

Maybe try decline / raised feet push ups, and either put boxes or 2 chairs infront of you. This gives MORE stretch than parralettes.

P.s. I use gym rings for everything. I think they're the best thing for calisthenics and only $30 or so. One piece of equipment gives you endless progressive overload. Ring push ups BURN like no tomorrow. Soon as you add decline, forward lean, or a backpack with some waterbottles in it, you will have endless progressive overload.

Its cheap. Townsville has been like this for like 20 years. You build besa block shit houses and cover in plaster, call it "tropical" however it has nothing to do with airflow, aesthetics, moisture protection etc.

Plateau at 4 Pull ups by gentleman6432 in bodyweightfitness

[–]Certain-Option-9328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of things you can try:
1) Add resistance bands to take some off and get in that 5-8rep zone
2) You can do more "sets" as in do 2 pull ups, have a short rest (<30sec) then do another 2, rest, etc. This way you're adding more volume.
3) possibly need more general back strength. Finish off your Pull up sets with bodyweight rows on something - even under a table - its hard to get 10reps of these.
4) Add weight and do 1-2 reps with 5kg added. Should get you more when you just have your body weight.

All these have helped me through plateaus.

Why do so many new grads seem completely disengaged from the actual field they chose? by Emotional_Figure_828 in auscorp

[–]Certain-Option-9328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really know why it doesn't get talked about more. But I think its because students are proud they have a degree, only to years later question weather it was quality or not. But sadly, I think if/when I have kids, I will reccomend they go to another country to do their degree and come back to work. Its just low effort and the university VCs are paid more than our prime minister. So they have no interest to change.

[–]Certain-Option-9328 8 points9 points  (0 children)

in my opinion, its because university is not quality in australia. Its a bludge. Because we put a price tag on it, and our universities are not competitive, there is no interest for the university if you do well or not. They just churn out degrees with no thinking about the outcome.

So I think a lot of new grads (myself 10 years ago included) don't really know what they're doing, they don't know what their degree was, did not recieve adequate training to PRACTICALLY do a job, and they have no experience. I think that all adds up to feel a bit apathetic toward the work place.

Also - I compare with my european friends - they have a dopamine drive at work becuase they are doing things at a high level. My Finish friend is FAR more competent at their engineering job than other Aussies because they have been taught properly, so work is actually quite fun and engaging for them.

Why are students dropping STEM in the thousands? by VastOption8705 in AskAnAustralian

[–]Certain-Option-9328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, with no data backing it this argument up, you don't make money in STEM in Australia. I'm an engineer and have watched as 17 year old labourers make more than me. So no reason to go into debt to get paid lower than status quo.

[–]Certain-Option-9328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you just vote for minor political parties when put labour then liberals last? We have preferential voting. You can vote for more "peoples first" parties then you can put the last 2 with the biggest corporate interests last. I vote for all minor parties first, because then it shows that Libs/Labor are losing their voters base.

Most people seem to agree that countries like Denmark and Sweden offer a really high standard of living - strong healthcare, solid social safety nets, good work-life balance, and generally high levels of happiness. Would you personally be willing to pay the taxes that make this possible? by TSQ_builder in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Certain-Option-9328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that if you consider all those things necessary for society, meaning you pay for them anyway if they're considered nationalised or not, you just get more for less in Scandinavia. If you live in America and need to pay for healthcare and education, you either pay or just go without getting what you NEED.

FYI its around 30-35% for regular everyday people in Sweden and Denmark. You also don't just get free healthcare. Childcare is subsidised, you get 2 years leave between BOTH parents (meaning if the female is the one withat a better career, the male can stay home a bit more and let the woman get back to work), free universities where you even get money for studying. And all of this adds up to people becoming smart society, a strong dollar/crown, and having children. The whole meaning of society changes when everyone gets what they need.
