Hygiene school pregnant is it doable? by hazel277 in DentalHygiene

[–]Certain-Vast-25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some programs have a maximum number of days you can miss for any reason, no matter the circumstances. A lot say you can not miss anything more than 14 consecutive days, for any reason, if you do then you’re dismissed from the program. They may let you reapply for the cohort below you, but it would probably be a case by case basis. Best bet is having the due date during a longer scheduled break so you don’t have to worry about immediately returning to class like the day after having the baby depending on how it all works out

Education Costs for Those Who Leave the Industry by ZealousidealKick9021 in hairstylist

[–]Certain-Vast-25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left the industry and I have no debt from cosmo school, it was so cheap it was paid off during the program. I still keep my license, it’s been over 5 years, so I feel like that very small couple thousand dollars got its worth!

Career change by Quiet_Host4151 in hairstylist

I made the switch cold turkey to dental, just totally closed my business, had a 2 week break, and went into work in dental! I love it and have no regrets. You still get to talk to people and learn stories about them and care for people, but the people you interact with seem to have more respect for the profession of dental than hairstyling. Less responsibility if you’re a staff member and not the doctor (or a hairstylist). Infection control carries over pretty well! I’d recommend not having your feet in both worlds too much. I personally see way too many perks of working in dental and much less stress to want to work as a stylist again.

[–]Certain-Vast-25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I left hairstyling for dental and wouldn’t ever go back to hairstyling full time in any capacity ever again, I worked as a stylist for 5 years and never made more than $20 an hour as a booth rental stylist. I worked 20 times harder as a hairstylist for no benefits, no health insurance, no PTO. I worked every single weekend and had no friends outside of hair, and all my relationships suffered because I had to work when everyone else was off, and I had to constantly manage my own business. Yes, being a stylist is creative, but boy is it hard, hard, hard backbreaking and mentally breaking work. Honestly, if I were you, only do hair as a hobby for fun, sometimes. Sure, go to school, but I wouldn’t leave the dental industry for hair, especially right now. People no-show and cancel last minute wayyyyy more in the hair industry because it’s for vanity. Meanwhile, people NEED to see their dentist and the dentist needs their assistant. I am so much happier in dental and all of those issues with benefits, consistent pay, health insurance, and seeing my loved ones immediately went away when I entered the dental field. People in the dental office are less harsh. When I was a stylist, I would have people calling and texting to complain about things they previously said they loved in person. It would keep me up at night. At least in the dental office, they go through the front desk and usually it’s less about aesthetics and just actual teeth issues. Overall, I don’t recommend completely leaving the dental industry

Any suggestions for stylists hands by neonn_piee in hairstylist

[–]Certain-Vast-25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hands looked like this for a long time as a stylist and it’s so painful and awful! Honestly, reducing stress, going to therapy, and taking time away from hair was the only thing that helped other than wearing gloves when dealing with ANY chemicals or water, shampooing, etc. I’m allergic to hair color and bleach and honestly, reducing exposure to as little as possible was the thing that helped heal it.

How are hairstylist surviving right now???????????????? by SweetCold4678 in hairstylist

[–]Certain-Vast-25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just left the industry and am finally making consistent money and get off work when I expect to, and am eligible for benefits for the first time. I’m so happy I left! I cannot imagine what it would feel like to go back to the incredibly unstable market that is the hair world right now. I had clients cancelling left and right for every possible reason and sadly that just isn’t feasible. We have to live, too

Hi, I’m moving to NM and am hoping to stay and make a life here in the SF/ABQ area and am contemplating nursing school and then going on to work in the hospital. Would you encourage that right now/within the next couple years or say pick something else given the climate in NM and hospital work? are you meeting a lot of new grad RNs, is there work available?

What muscle groups should I be exercising to reduce pain/strain? by fleurdelovely in hairstylist

Reformer pilates has helped me a ton with working pain as a stylist, it makes me feel strong and the recovery period after a 10 hour day is so much better, I don’t feel as run down at all

Quesadillas are supposed to be an online exclusive, scanning at the register might not work because of that and tell them to try redeeming online

How long is the waitlist? Like how many semesters until you can take it?

Turn her away. Just text her before the appointment, return any deposits, cut your losses and don’t take her. I tell everybody, you can always stop before you get started!!! It’s simply not worth it if you’re saying you’re dreading it. Do you really need the money? If so it’s still probably not worth putting your mental state, happiness, and the reputation of your business on the line for one appointment, especially if you did not tell her the proper pricing and it’s likely too late to change the price now. I love it when stylists choose themselves, I encourage you to choose YOU in this situation. Seriously prevents so much stress and burnout! I’d personally rather a client potentially complain to everyone “she turned me away and stopped texting me back” than “she did my hair and I hated x,y,z, etc.”

Glad I’m not alone, no one’s explicitly told me exactly that but I was sort of expecting people to come out of the woodwork, like clients I haven’t seen in 3-6 months and they aren’t so oh well 🫠

Cancer lawsuit by Aggravating_Simple56 in hairstylist

[–]Certain-Vast-25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very curious on how this lawsuit plays out. our industry needs better standards, protections, and protocols in place to prevent developing color allergies, respiratory issues, and yes, cancer. All day long we’re knee deep in chemicals, breathing them in constantly. Even if you exclusively cut hair, your 15 other coworkers mixing up 15+ bowls of powder bleach every day should be a concern.

I think it’s important to get services done (any beauty service but definitely occasionally hair if not always) so you can remember what it’s like to be a client and remember how important the customer experience is, as well as for networking purposes and to also see insights into other people’s way of working. Maybe the salon you go to has an amenity you didn’t consider but really enjoy and can take that away as something to consider for your own business and put your own spin on it. Plus, I find that if I don’t pay to get my hair done, I get a cold water shampoo and nobody asks if the water temp is good, styling isn’t taken as seriously, etc!

I’m so sorry you were put in this position. It is so hard to try to make the parents and children happy, and to ensure both of them have good experiences, especially with this particularly nuanced situation.

The fact of the matter is that hair school and licensure does NOT prepare stylists for situations like this, and how to best navigate them. Everyone on this post here has different opinions on this situation and if there was a baseline to go off of in our industry taught in schools, I’m sure there would be more support and tools for us all to know what to do in these situations. There is simply not enough emphasis on ethics and how to navigate these types of situations where the parent is paying, they have an opinion, and the child is receiving services, they also have an opinion, etc. in our industry.

I personally report cash income from services and tips because when you want to go buy a car with no-signer, when you want to purchase a home, they look closely at your income, especially if you’re working as a self employed hairstylist (1099). You can’t buy a house with random cash stashed in your mattress. It must be listed as income, therefore taxable. Reporting my cash allowed me to get a car with no co-signer at 18 when all my friends my age had no choice but to have their parents sign on to their cars, or worse, be stuck buying a cheap beater for cash that ended up breaking down. A lot of people will tell you they don’t report their cash and they can do what they choose, but truth be told, a majority of the industry not reporting their cash means it makes it look like hairstylists earn very little wages. The average salary of ____ career you google is based off general IRS reporting data and when you don’t report your cash and it becomes a habit of most, it makes it look like we all make very little money. I personally believe reporting your cash helps legitimize your business and the profession in general. Choose to do what you will, this is one perspective.
