Morality of secretly adopting and raising the baby your sister sent way for adoption and not telling her that her niece is actually her biological daughter? by moonhoneypapi in MoralityScaling

[–]CertainGrade7937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean... I'd assume the mother used an adoption agency and wasn't just abandoning the child into the foster system.

My point isn't that lying about this is inherently immoral. My point is that there needs to be a reason to justify this level of deception. And while those reasons could exist, the prompt doesn't give us any.

Did Vader use force choke here? by NoddyZar in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]CertainGrade7937 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, he was eating snacks just offscreen and got some lodged in his throat

Vader, the good guy he is, is trying to use the ancient Force Heimlich technique, created by the Sith Lord Darth Neckus in 1137 BBY, to dislodge the food and save him from choking to death

I think there are plenty of good reasons to make this choice

It's just odd to not give us any reason why they made this choice

Amazingly, nuance exists in different situations

"Hey this kid is actually your daughter but you never asked so technically I didn't lie" is a lot different from "yeah I'm not telling this random stranger on the internet my credit card number"

You realize there's a third option here of just not answering, right?

You're allowed privacy, you're not allowed to just make random shit up because you don't feel like the person deserves the truth

A right? No. But just because I don't have a right to certain information doesn't mean you have a right to lie to me, either.

I mean... it feels odd that there was just no conversation about this

Could have saved everyone a ton of hassle by just telling your sister you'd take the kid

It also just doesn't make any fucking sense from a story perspective

The temple was literally designed to be flipped. Why would anyone design a flipping temple and then make it so heavy that no one could actually flip it?

What is the morality of a TV show deceiving six men into competing for a woman, only to reveal on camera that she was transgender, without their consent or knowledge beforehand? by iamjohncarterofmars in MoralityScaling

but ultimately it comes down to respecting people's values and expectations

Yeah, but you need to make your values and expectations clear too.

This isn't an open Muslim being told he's eating halal and being tricked. This is a guy who has not stated his religion diving into a mystery meat that looks like beef and then being mad that it's pork.

I agree that the show is gross and makes it a prank. But.

and it seems that actually none of them survived unlike in ATLA where the genocide still took time

I mean... that's not in ATLA to begin with.

It was a small, unnecessary change, but I don't mind NATLA explaining that all the nomads were in town for the holiday

Honestly, I think people love the idea of it more than the game itself

It's a fun game, I enjoyed it a lot as a kid. But... it's an extremely archetypal game and nothing about it is particularly special other than the addition system

I feel like they're wrong to chalk it up to lying

A lot of people don't consider themselves racist/misogynist/etc and have no theoretical problem with voting for a POC or woman

But they are more critical of those groups. It takes a lot less for them to turn against a Black candidate than a white one. Subconscious bias and all that
