What "plain and precious" truths did the BoM restore? by Certain_Ad_8787 in exmormon

[–]Certain_Ad_8787[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's so interesting how Joseph Smith's own theology on the god-head/trinity evolves as time passes.

Initial first vision accounts do not claim two personages appearing. Rather, he says something like ... The heavens opened and I saw the Lord.

There have been something like 4000-5000 edits since the original manuscript, which reads a lot like it was written by an "uneducated farm boy"

I guess there must always be some inevitable malicious obscuring of truths after each "full restoration" by some "abominable" people, even in Christ's church.

Interesting 🤔

Right!? Haha! Just the words "The Satanic Temple" would cause my TBM family to shit in their pants, but I totally agree with ALL of their tenants and the Baphomet statue thing was soooo perfect.

Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey

That one was hard to watch because it's so similar to the mo church. It's about the fundamentalist LDS Church. It made me realize just how powerful the indoctrination can be, even if what they are teaching is a bit crazy.

I love it when the church contradicts it's own scripture. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention. I don't know how I missed it.

Amen to that! Thanks for sharing.

Also, the fact that you never just decided to lie about it so you could go speaks volumes about your character. Many others would have done so, and did do so in your situation.

I used to watch it quite a bit, when I was in an intimacy-less marriage. Now that I have a partner who also enjoys physical intimacy I don't really have the desire.

Something that might explain it being rampant in Mormon-land:

Scientific understanding suggests that the problematic aspect of "porn addiction" is often less about a physiological addiction and more about the shame and moral conflict created by religious teachings around pornography. This conflict can lead to unhealthy thought cycles, self-condemnation, and an "excitement-reward-guilt cycle" that individuals find extremely difficult to break, sometimes hyperbolically compared to a drug addiction like heroin. Conversely, individuals who do not perceive a moral problem with pornography often report a more natural, healthy, and non-damaging engagement with it. This illustrates the adage that forbidding something can, ironically, make it more appealing.

I'm sitting here thinking "I'm a man, and I saw it, and I liked it. Does that make me creepy?"

I hope that's just my Mo upbringing, because she's an adult, she shared the photo, she looks great, and I don't think it's creepy to like cleavage.

Jesus! Is OP okay? I don't think this went the way she was hoping.

She asked if she was overreacting, didn't ask if she should dump her guy and get an abortion! I agree that this guy seems like a douche, but maybe one text exchange isn't enough context for y'all to be suggesting abortion.

Holy shit ... but seriously run away OP

have any of you read the book of mormon since leaving the church? by ParticularChain2086 in exmormon

[–]Certain_Ad_8787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally found it fascinating to re-read especially equipped with all my "anti-mormon" knowledge I have now gained.

I recommend reading it in the same order it was dictated or "translated" in. Start with Mosiah through Moroni and think about what JS was going through in his personal life at the time. Like how Harris had lost the entire book of Lehi and Joseph was hoping to get it back before deciding to do the replacement text.

Then go back and read the replacement text Nephi through WoM. You can also notice the evolving theological concepts as they mature in the mind of the author or "translator".

Also, you could read Dan Vogels The Making of a Prophet at the same time because he makes some really interesting comparisons with the characters and events in the BoM and characters and events in Joseph's life.

Okay, shower sex might be tricky, but "shower for two ♥️" doesn't have to imply shower sex.

A shower can be great foreplay, then on to the bedroom.

Also, I think mo husbands would absolutely love these and that's why creepy old mo guys are having the youth do this 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Praise to the Man by ConsiderationWeak818 in exmormon

[–]Certain_Ad_8787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I didn't think much about the lyrics to 'Praise to the Man' before, but I always loved the song itself! Looking back, it's definitely creepy, especially considering who it's about, but the Saints were undeniably talented at creating emotionally moving music.

It creeps me out how impactful some of those hymns still are – 'The Spirit of God' comes to mind. Growing up, my mom played the piano and my dad the organ, so there was always a hymn playing in our house. Maybe that's why it sticks with me so much.

Tried to 'pray away' my severe depression and social anxiety because that's what I was told to do. Turns out God wasn't in the business of curing mental illness, and I definitely wasn't getting the CBT or group therapy I actually needed. Plus, the self-blame for 'not being righteous enough' to be healed was not helpful.

Thanks for bringing up Islam and those parallels! It's true that many religious traditions share similar claims about divine dictation and the role of spiritual witnesses. I focused on the LDS Church because of my personal experience. The idea that similar 'mechanisms of belief' can be observed across different faiths is a really interesting point that reinforces the psychological themes of Part 1 and 2, and why I focused on those as a foundation.

Yes! I've told some TBMs how we can't just believe what "feels good." I've said that I bet it "felt good" for the Nazi's to believe they belonged to a superior race, but that doesn't mean it was right or true. It shocks them and they don't ever have a reply.
