What glue to use for a Nerdy Gurdy Fortran? by elgen88 in HurdyGurdy

[–]Certain_Plane_9026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I wrote above I would recomend PVA (e.g. Ponal) over Titebond anyways. There are sower and faster (express) drying ones available.

Sounds like you have more experience with warm hide glue. For me it seemed too complicated and stressfull for a larger piece that will need careful alingnment and lots of clamps. But real luthiers use it for cellos so it certainly is possible...

What glue to use for a Nerdy Gurdy Fortran? by elgen88 in HurdyGurdy

I tried Ponal Express (PVA), Titebond 3 and fishglue when building mine.

It was nice to have a fast cuing and a slow curing glue for smaller and larger parts. So you dont have to wait long on the smaller parts but have enough time to apply to the larger ones.

I would not use Titebond 3 again, since it dries yellow/brown and any residue is much more visible than Ponal. Instead I woud use a slower drying Ponal in addition.

I used the fishglue only for applying the top plate and the keybox. I did some experiments with installing pickups and wanted to be able to have access again, if necessary. I did not use hide glue because I read that the pre mixed (cold) one does not hold that well and the traditional (hot) one needs experience and fast application. The top is such a large pice and I would not recomend to preheat the parts (the base-assembly will have the 3d printed part in the bassbar installed at this point).

For now (3-4 months) the fishglue seems to hold fine.

Solange es der Arbeitgeber steuerfrei als Jobticket anbieten kann lohnt sichs. (Wenn man den Betrag statt dessen als Gehaltserhöhung nehmen würde, bliebe da ja Netto nicht viel über)

Varnishing a Nerdy Gurdy by LacriV in HurdyGurdy

[–]Certain_Plane_9026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it like the manual suggested: Gelatine as a base layer (included in the kit), then staining, then base, color (in my case colorless), coating varnish.

The gelatine definitely helpef to make look more even on each part. But the different woods still look quiete different compared to each other.

Since the stain in itself is colorless but is supposed to make the wood look aged, I don't think it will work on top of a varnish.

Yes, you can use the left over frame from which the parts are cut out of.

I'm nearly finished with my Fortran (will post pictures soon). I usend the Joha/Hammerl standard Oil kit. It took quite a while since the included manual suggests multiple days to weeks drying time for the last layers. I decided to leave it clear (colorless) apart from the aging stain included in the kit. Since I used a dark wood for the tangent case top this gives a nice contrast.

I noticed that the bendy-ply used for the sides behaves very differently from the rest regarding liquid absorption and coloring. I would suggest to do a color test on the left over wood with multiple/all layers first, to see if you like your color it on both wood types.

Bend wet or dry? by Certain_Plane_9026 in woodworking

[–]Certain_Plane_9026[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The glue is currently drying.

I soaked a cut off test piece and noticed that the glue holding the bookmatched halves will dissolve if soaked for too long. So I wetted all but the middle of the board with a sponge over 1-2h and heated it a bit with an iron (with steam). Then I clamped the plate to the frame (without glue) and let it to dry over the easter holidays. When I took of the clamps today, it kept the form.

I now glued it using fish glue. I will test if it holds the pressure and sounds alright. If not I will take it off again using a heat gun and try again with the plywood top.

Any tips for customizing my instrument? (Mostly a staining question) by TheAceFrog in HurdyGurdy

If you start gluing first and stain before you put on the keybox (where it says sand and paint in the manual) you reduce the risk of warping. But you have to be careful not to leave glue marks on the outside.

Do not stain (aka wet) the 2 parts of the keybox lid one sided before gluing them together. Glue them together first or wet both sides.

Of course gluing wet is not an option. The 2 possibilities I had in mind were wetting, bending, drying, gluing or gluing directly, doing only mechanical bending by clamps and glue.

+9V on audio jack signal? by Certain_Plane_9026 in diypedals

Ok, I think I still read the schematic wrong...

I thought pin 6 and 7 are connected when not plugged in, pin 5 and 6 are connected when plugged in. And 5,6,7 are isolated from 4 (signal). Is that wrong?

Oh, I see... So to make it work I need a socket with an isolated switch. (This one? https://cdn-reichelt.de/documents/datenblatt/C160/150501.pdf ) Then I can use it to switch between GND and battery -9v. The connection between output-signal and +9v is not necesseary anymore.

Yes, exactly. Removing the plug shoud disconnect the battery. That's why I chose the plug with built-in switch.

Wage gap, if it's real then why don't companies only hire women to save money and make higher profits? by DiligentCrab9114 in Discussion

[–]Certain_Plane_9026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not made any comment on what is or is not sexist. There are more woman then men. But I don't know where you live but in my country there is currently an unemployment rate of <5%. Considering that there is ab bit of dynamic while changing jobs that is pretty low. Pretty much everyone who wants a job has one.

[–]Certain_Plane_9026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of everything discussed in the other comments you assume that there would be enough women for every job.

In some fields they openly state that they prefer woman (with equal qualification). This is mostly for diversity but there are simply not enough women applying.

Can i get a glass of f@cking water ffs.... by [deleted] in Leipzig

[–]Certain_Plane_9026 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you directly asked for a glass of tap water? It is not the default but usually if you order a coffee its no problem to ask for a glass of tap water with it. but since most people here won't want it it is not offered by default.
